Jaw looks at the humans, these creatures that look so similar to him, and doesn't understand them. He's always been a shadow, always been soulless, but he wants to learn to understand
Rusty looks at the shadows, twisted by death into something so very different, and understands them all too well. She still has her soul, despite the curse constantly nipping at her heels, but she's still warily willing to reach out

the very basis of scarf duo is trust- jaw, who is physically incapable of trusting people, sees that rusty actually cares about him and is willing to explain things, and rusty, who is surrounded by death and terrified of the shadows, sees that jaw isn't malicious he just literally doesn't understand. they want to keep each other safe, rusty physically and jaw emotionally, and that's so so hard to do in the chaos of soul hunt but they try so hard
these two make me ill, you should go watch soul hunt so they make you ill too
