Broken Family

Summary:

After Adam, Bree, and Leo use Chase's commando app to win a football game the app glitches and only partially disengages leaving Chase and Spike in the same headspace/body together. This upsets Chase and makes him feel like he isn't part of the family.

Work Text:

Spike, Adam, and Bree came home from winning their football game. “That was awesome!” Adam shouted.

Spike grunted while flexing, “Yeah we kicked their asses.”

Bree was excited, “All the boys will be lining up to ask me out.”

Leo smiled, “I am now the coolest in school.”

Adam bumped chests with Spike, “Good to have you, but we need Chase back.”

Spike looked at him, “How am I supposed to get-”

Disengage, 50% until the red battery was stuck at half, Glitch in the system and Chase wasn't confused, “Guys why do I remember Spike coming out?”

“Because I'm still here, punk. And much cooler.”

“They like me, I'm the real one.”

“I am not second grade shark meat, punk.”

Bree looked at them, “Guys what is going on?”

Eddie laughed, “You are in trouble, majorly.”

Chase started running fueled by Spike's speed, “Mr. Davenport!!!!!”

Mr. Davenport stopped in his tracks, “Chase what's wrong. Did your commando come out?”

Spike grunted, “It did and I'd argue I wasn't held back by this loser.”

Mr. Davenport's face fell, “Oh, oh no. This isn't good.”

Chase and Spike spoke simultaneously.

“What do you mean not good?”
“I'd argue it's good.”

“Calm down Chase, you know when you're angry it ramps Spike up. There must have been a glitch, let's get you back to the lab to fix it.”

“Absolutley Mr. Davenport.”
“I ain't being put away like shark meat.”

Spike started running away forcing Chase along, “Mr. Davenport help!” Chase screamed while forced along by this intruder in his body.

“Don't worry Chase, we'll take care of you.”

Mr. Davenport ran to his basement, “Do you guys have any idea what you done? How long was Spike engaged?”

Leo answered, “It's no big deal, it was since lunch.”

“Since LUNCH! No wonder the commando app glitches, it isn't meant to last that long, you” He clenched his fists, “I'll be mad at you later, right now we got to help Chase.

Bree is need your superseded to carry Adam to where he is, we don't have time for normal transportation and Adam I need you to grab Chase, we have to contain him in the lab until I can calm him down enough to hopefully completely disengage the app.”

“On it Big D.”

“And Leo, I need you to distract Spike without making him angry.”

Bree let Adam on her back and started tracking her brother (brothers?” and saw him throwing trash cans. “Chase!”

“Help me. He's insane!”

“Never catch me!” Spike grunted while throwing a trashcan at Bree, she started dodging trash cans letting Adam tackle the combined boys. “Alright, coming home.”

Spike went to land a hit but Chase held his arms back, it was in a halfway struggling position fighting to hit/not hit Adam.

“You aren't hitting him.”
“Let me go, you're lucky brainiac is holding me back.”

Adam tossed Chase/Spike in the lab, “Here they are.” Bree and Adam stayed out of the lab.

Bree looked down, “I am worried, what if Spike stays.”

“Then we have a cool brother.”

Bree punched Adam, “That's not funny! Chase is suffering.”

Meanwhile inside the lab Leo was talking to Spike about the football game keeping Spike away from Chase's fight.

Mr. Davenport looked at Chase, “Chase I know you're angry and they will be punished believe me, but I need you to try to lower your heart rate.”

“How! I am angry, they used me for a game and didn't even try to get me back!”

“Count to 10 with me.”

“1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.”

“Good your heart rate is a little lower. The good thing is usually when the commando app engages for 4 hours or more you usually don't come back, you didn't have that glitch so you are fighting, but Chase I need you to continue fighting to be yourself or you will be stuck with him, we are on a time limit.”

“How?”

“You like math, calculate the geometry in this room, think of Bree and Adam and Leo.”

“Right now I want to punch them.”

“I understand that but you can't be angry, Spike feeds on it.”

“Okay no anger. Happy thoughts. I got to see school, Bree rescued me, Adam did too, Leo is talking to Spike.”

“And having the best conversation of his life.” Spike grunted. “He doesn't want you here.”

“Yeah.” Chase frowned, “Obviously.”

Leo stood up, “That's not true Chase, we were selfish, we want you here, we were so focused on winning we forgot the human!”

Chase looked at Mr. Davenport, “You tried to send us away, you all used my commando app to win a game, I doubt you really want me here.” Chase was crying and the commando app ran in the background, DISENGAGE. And finally completed the program.

“The good news is Spike is gone.”

“Probably bad news right.” Chase slammed the door open and went to a spare room in the mansion.

Bree and Adam entered, “What is wrong with Chase?”

Mr. Davenport's face was red, “Due to your very irresponsible and disrespectful actions I might add, your brother feels unwanted by the household, you're all grounded for three months. Now I got to talk to Chase.

You all are lucky that we even have him and not a Spike included version of him. I never been so passed off!”

 

Mr. Davenport searched the mansion high and low for Chase and found the locked door, “Chase you don't have to open the door just listen. I know you are angry and upset right now, but the good thing is you aren't feeling threatened. I never wanted rid of you, I forgot that you are human, I was so focused on making you the best you could be, I forgot that you also need interaction.

I do not like Spike better than you, you don't tear my tinsel and make your siblings eat it, and I gave you the app to protect you. I hope you know Chase that I care about you.” He walked away.

Chase laid on the bed, “Yeah, care.”

It's been weeks but besides school Chase wouldn't come out of his room and made other friends. He would grab snacks from home if the Davenports were lucky, Mr. Davenport got so worried he snuck money in Chase's wallet. “If he doesn't eat the required amount he will starve.”

Tanya looked at the kids, “I am also disappointed in you all. Your brother is suffering over a football game, I hope the win was worth it.”

Chase came in and grabbed a snack and went to his room. Mr. Davenport said yes immediately if Chase asked to sleepover at a friend's place as at least he's interacting with people.

Chase eventually decided to come to the lab when mission prep was going on.

“Mr. Davenport, is now a bad time?”

Mr. Davenport jumped as he didn't hear Chase come in, “It is never a bad time Chase.”

“I wanted to ask if I could no longer be part of missions. I know I haven't done them lately anyway, but make it official."

“Are you sure Chase, I left you on in case you changed your mind.”

“I am sure, I thought for a while.”

“I can make it official, if you ever change your mind you are always welcome back.” Chase shook his head and Mr. Davenport put his hand on Chase's shoulder, “I am serious Chase, you are always welcome.”

Chase turned around and went back to his room.

Mr. Davenport looked at his kids and while still mad just continued the mission prep. “Yeah he's not coming back.”

Bree said in a high voice full of denial of the situation, “Isn't there anything we can do.”

Mr. Davenport looked at the three children in the lab, “No, there is not. His trust has been broken by all of us. The only thing we can do is give him what he wants, space. I'll continue to let him know he's welcome anytime he wants to join us and you would do well too, but right now he is a ghost of himself.

I'm not just mad at you guys, I'm mad at myself too. At least Tasha, he lets her in so he has someone he considers family. We will not pressure him, understand?”

“Yes, Big D.”
“Yes, Mr. Davenport.”
“Yes, Mr. Davenport.”
