Chapter Text
Dorothy awoke to a pounding in her head and ringing in her ears. She pushed herself up on shaky legs and blinked away the spots in her vision.
Her house was a wreck.
And, she couldn’t remember a single thing about what had happened.
She stumbled out and down the broken steps, head fuzzy and warm.
Yellow, glimmering brick lay in front of her, surrounded by bright, colorful houses. Dorothy frowned, where was she?
Then—
“You!” Came a bellowing voice.
She looked up, and came face-to-face with a woman, who was fully and completely green.
“You killed my sister!” She screamed in Dorothy’s face.
The brunette girl winced, shaking her head quickly. She didn’t kill anyone.
The green girl lunged for her, Dorothy braced herself. She was in a new place all alone, with a grown lady yelling at her for something she most definitely did not do. She would never kill anyone. Then, a blonde girl in all pink came between the two.
“Elphie, dearest. She is quite clearly a child. I’m sure she didn’t mean to kill anyone.”
The green girl—Elphie?—huffed in annoyance, stepping back when the blonde one pushed her away.
Then, she turned.
“Hi, I’m Glinda, she’s Elphaba. What’s your name?”
Dorothy took a moment to think, then slowly shook her head once more.
“Oh, honey. I see you hit your head pretty bad. Don’t you remember?”
“She’s lying!” Yelled Elphaba, who was charging forward again. “She just doesn’t want to face the consequences of murder!”
“Elphaba, please!” Glinda shouted back.
Dorothy’s lower lip trembled, then—
“Glinda, why is she doing that?”
Glinda turned and found Dorothy sucking on her thumb, swaying side to side, almost like a scared toddler.
“For Oz sake, Elphaba. Now, look what you’ve done!”
Dorothy looked up into Glinda’s eyes, which made her tears begin. And, once one fell, it was over. Her knees gave out as sobs racked through her. Glinda knelt beside her, reaching out to wipe away her tears.
“It’s alright, sweetie. Would you like a cuddle?”
Dorothy blinked, then opened her arms wide for Glinda to scoop her up. The blonde smiled and pulled Dorothy into her lap, bouncing her lightly and whispering reassurances.
When her sobs calmed into soft sniffles, Glinda finally looked up at her green girlfriend, who was very confused.
“She’s a big kid, why is she acting like a… A baby!”
Glinda groaned, tucking the girl closer.
“Elphie, all the stress you caused her and her head injury has clearly affected her. Her mind has regressed in age.”
Elphaba grimaced, “So, she thinks she’s a baby?”
Glinda nodded, moving to coo at her. “I wish she could tell us about herself.”
Dorothy was still whining and whimpering, so Glinda offered her the pad of her thumb.
“I don’t have a pacifier right now, little one. Will this be okay?”
Dorothy contemplated for a moment, then latched on.
The effect was instant, her eyes drooping and breath evening out.
Even Elphaba softened, a shy smile spreading across her face as she watched Glinda interact with the little.
Glinda caught her gaze, smiling at each other, before rocking the girl gently.
Dorothy tried so hard not to fall asleep, but the comfort of the nice lady was making it difficult.
“She’s fighting it.” Elphaba whispered, watching as Dorothy’s eyes slid shut, then instantly snapped open again.
Glinda giggled, “She’ll go down soon, then we can take her back.”
Elphaba nodded, seemingly warming up to the idea of having a little about.
~~~~~
Dorothy woke up in a large, cold bedroom. She had a little stuffy bear clutched in her arms. She gasped, she was eleven years old! Why was she sleeping with a stuffy?
Then, she noticed the two women conspiring in the corner of the room.
The second she made eye contact with the blonde, that fuzzy feeling started crawling through her again.
“She’s awake.” Glinda whispered, moving to crouch in front of her. “Hi, sweetheart. Are you okay?”
“Uhm—My head hurts a little, but—“
Elphaba gasped, “See! I told you it was fake!”
Dorothy frowned, what was she talking about?
“Where am I?” She asked.
“Well, you’re in Oz, of course!” Glinda said, smiling. “Do you remember your name? Or maybe your age?”
“Dorothy—Dorothy Gale. And, I’m eleven.”
“Dorothy—“ Elphaba began.
“Elphaba! Will you please, for the love of Lurline, just be quiet!”
Elphaba sulked slightly, moving to sit in a chair, in the corner.
“Dorothy. That’s a lovely name. Do you remember why you’re here?”
Glinda’s soft tone and caring nature made that warmth develop further, but she tried to push it away.
“T-There was a tornado. And, my house was taken by it, and crashed here.”
“I told you, Elphie. She didn’t mean harm.”
Elphaba grumbled something.
Dorothy started blinking slower, her grip tightening on the bear.
Glinda noticed it immediately, and climbed into the bed beside her.
With this newfound safety, Dorothy let herself regress. She wasn’t as little as before, but still a young toddler.
Elphaba stood and started walking towards them, when Dorothy whined and hid in Glinda’s embrace.
“It’s alright, Dorothy, she won’t hurt you.”
“Meanie!” She said, muffled by Glinda’s bodice.
Glinda stifled a laugh, running a soothing hand along Dorothy’s spine.
Elphaba crossed her arms. “I’m not mean!”
Glinda tilted her head. “Well, you did yell at her the second she landed here. Poor girl was just a baby and you petrified her.”
Dorothy peered up then. “G’inda!”
“Yes, sweet Dollie?”
“Hungy!”
Glinda laughed. “You’re hungry?”
Dorothy nodded, happily.
“Alright, little one. Let’s get you some lunch, then we can show you around this place!”
When they stepped out into the hallway, Dorothy suddenly gasped, halting. Glinda grabbed her hand, eyebrows furrowed.
“Castle!” Dorothy declared.
Glinda giggled, making Dorothy smile, her eyes twinkling as she stared up at the architecture.
“It’s the palace, silly!” She said, pulling the girl along through the hallways.
When they arrived to the dining hall, food was already being served, with Fiyero sat at the head of the table.
Dorothy stopped once more, hiding behind Elphaba and clutching at her.
Elphaba grimaced. “Glinda, get her off me.”
Glinda rolled her eyes, crouching down. “What’s the matter?”
Dorothy pointed at Fiyero, then whispered, “St’anger.”
“He’s not a stranger, love. Come, we can meet him together!” She pried, arms open wide for Dorothy to crash herself into. Glinda scooped her up, perching the little on her hip, then walked over to the very confused Fiyero.
“Dorothy, this is Fiyero. He’s our friend. Fiyero, this is Dorothy.”
Fiyero frowned. “What is going on?”
Elphaba shrugged. “Don’t look at me, she’s the one who brought this weird girl into our palace.”
Glinda’s head snapped around to Elphaba, a look of disbelief on her face.
“Sorry.” Elphaba said, trembling under Glinda’s gaze.
“You will be.” The blonde scoffed. “We’ll talk later.”
Then, she turned her attention back to Fiyero.
“The second Dorothy landed in Oz, Elphaba shouted in her face and made her cry. She also hit her head pretty hard—She’s age regressing.”
Fiyero nodded, finger waving at the girl. In turn, Dorothy hesitantly waved back, then buried her face back in Glinda’s neck.
“Let’s eat, sweetheart.”
Dorothy nodded, allowing Glinda to place her in a seat beside her.
Eating was easy, Glinda had to occasionally help Dorothy, wiping her mouth or encouraging her to eat the vegetables, but besides that it ran smoothly.
Then, the girls were trying to leave to go into town, on a hunt for things Dorothy may need, but she was quite upset.
“You can have so much fun with Fiyero! I promise we’ll only be gone for a little while.”
Dorothy pouted, lip trembling as she tried to keep her tears at bay.
Then Elphaba started talking.
“Let’s just go. She’s fine.” She hissed, pulling Glinda along.
Dorothy gasped, then wailed as she flopped down onto the floor.
Glinda turned to comfort her, but Elphaba gripped her tighter, forcing her away.
“Elphaba! Stop it—She needs me!”
Elphaba’s eyes narrowed. “No, she doesn’t—“
“Why are you so cruel to her!”
“Glinda, she killed my sister! She was the only family I had left.”
Glinda groaned. “She’s a kid! It wasn’t her fault. Will you stop treating her as if it was?!”
And so, they argued the whole broom ride into town.
Dorothy didn’t settle at all. Instead, she seemed to sob harder. Fiyero tried to help, but he was as clueless as a scarecrow. Dorothy kept whining ‘G’inda’ and Fiyero couldn’t do anything. He even tried to perform a dance for her, but Dorothy didn’t acknowledge him.
Then—
“Dollie! My little one, I’m back!” Glinda called, running towards her.
Dorothy bolted up, tears still streaming as she lifted her arms, letting Glinda pick her up.
“Oh, sweet girl. Mommy’s got you.”
Elphaba groaned, then masked it with a cough, remembering the previous argument.
“Would you like to see what we bought for you?” Glinda asked, walking towards the pile of bags. Dorothy nodded excitedly.
They had bought a number of pacifiers, diapers, bottles, comfortable clothes, books, toys and stuffies, milk formula, and all plastic cutlery, for when she was a toddler or even aged up.
Dorothy adored it all, immediately reaching for the pink pacifier with a bubble design.
“Here, I knew you’d love it. You’re just like me.” Glinda smiled, she already loved her like one of her own.
Dorothy instantly accepted it, finding comfort in it and a small stuffed unicorn.
Glinda smiled, taking her over to the room they converted into a nursery.
“This is your new room, for when you’re little. I’ll explain again when you’re aged up but…” She trailed off, seeing the blank stare Dorothy was giving her. “Let’s get you changed, hm?”
Glinda easily slid dorothy out of her little checkered dress, opting to put the girl in a plush onesie, to keep her warm.
Then, Dorothy toddled over, picked up a picture book, and brought it back over to Glinda. The blonde smiled, settling into the rocking chair and pulling Dorothy into her lap. She cleared the throat, then continued to read the book three times before Dorothy fell asleep. With a deep sigh, she stood, carrying her and placing her in the crib. She kissed Dorothy’s forehead, lingering in the doorway for a moment too long.
“You really care about her, huh?”
Glinda yelped, spinning to find Elphaba behind her, smirking.
“Shhh! It took so long to get her down!” Glinda exclaimed, taking the baby monitor and shutting the door behind her. “But, yeah. I do. I just want to give her the world.”
Elphaba smiled softly at her, then linked their hands. “Let’s go to sleep, my love.”
~~~~~
Dorothy awoke in the crib and gasped.
She frowned deeply, then clambered out, ignoring the loud beeping alarm from the baby monitor, which had detected her movement.
She pushed the door open, deciding to explore the palace herself.
She was wandering the halls for hours, peeking in doors and admiring the building. Then, she realized she was lost. All the halls looked the same. Even worse, there were no maids or people around to ask for help.
In the meantime, Glinda was panicking. When she heard the monitor beeping, she woke up and played back the footage. It showed Dorothy climbing out of her crib, then disappearing. She jumped up, running through hallways and calling out to her, but she was nowhere to be found.
Elphaba used her magic to see where the girl was, then sat Glinda down.
“Wait here, I’ll go get her.”
With a sigh, Dorothy pushed open another door and her breath hitched.
It was a big, open room. It held a large face of a man, though Dorothy didn’t know who he was, and it was surrounded in curtains.
She exhaled, reaching up to touch the metal, then—
“Dorothy Gale!”
Dorothy screamed, whipping around. Elphaba was stomping towards her.
“What are you doing on this side of the palace?! Do you know how worried Glinda is?”
Dorothy frantically shook her head, expecting the worst. Elphaba hadn’t been nice to her the whole time, why would she start now?
Then, Elphaba pulled her into a hug, sighing with relief.
“I’m glad you’re okay. I’m sorry I haven’t been super accommodating—“
Dorothy giggled at that.
“—but Glinda really cares about you. So, I do, too.”
“I appreciate that.” Dorothy said, muffled by Elphaba’s dress. “I’m sorry my house landed on your sister…”
Elphaba smirked, shaking her head. “Come along, pretty. Let’s not scare Glinda any more.”
Dorothy and Elphaba were talking when they approached Glinda.
“Dollie! Oh, darling. You scared me!” Glinda gasped, rushing over to the pair.
“Mommy!” Dorothy squealed, running into Glinda’s hug. Although she was aged up now, she couldn’t deny her caregiver. “I’m sorry for wandering off.” She admitted, looking down at the floor.
Glinda smiled softly, booping her nose. “That’s quite alright, sweetpea.” Then, she looked up to her girlfriend. “I see you’re being nice now.”
Elphaba nodded, muttering, “It wasn’t her fault, I was just angry.”
“I know, baby.” Glinda responded, pecking Elphaba’s lips, before taking Dorothy’s hand and walking to the main room.
Fiyero was sprawled across the couch, The Ozian Newspaper in hand. “You know, Gillikin wants to see their princess again.”
Glinda rolled her eyes, huffing. “I’ll go at some point! I am a very busy lady. They’re so pushy over there!”
Elphaba snickered, taking a seat next to him, gesturing for Dorothy to do the same, and pulling Glinda into her lap. “There, there, my love. Gillikin is your hometown, they miss you.”
Dorothy’s eyebrows furrowed, “What’s a Gillikin?”
The group burst into giggles, before Fiyero began explaining. “We’re in the Emerald City, which is the centre of Oz. Gillikin is up north, Munchkind Land—where your house crashed—is east. Winkie land, also known as The Vinkus is west, where I’m from. And, finally, south is the Quadling land, nothing really happens down there.”
Dorothy nodded along, excited to learn about the new place she was in. Everything was so brightly colored and lively, compared to Kansas. Oh, how she’d love to stay here forever.
Elphaba and Glinda were tangled in bed, asleep after another long day.
Then—
A loud wail.
The kind of cry only little babies could achieve.
Elphaba stirred first, automatically moving to leave.
Glinda sighed, whispering, “Where are you going?”
Elphaba leaned over to kiss her temple. “Dorothy’s crying, I’ll be back in a clock tick.”
Glinda let her eyes flutter open, then sat up fully.
“Hey, it’s okay. I’ve got her.”
Glinda shook her head slightly. “When she’s this young, she cries just to make sure I’m still around. I can bring her in here.”
Elphaba nodded, happily clambering back under the covers.
When Glinda made it across the hall to Dorothy’s room, she was sobbing now, definitely waking up the whole of Oz.
“Hi there, sweet baby. Why’re we crying?” Glinda asked softly, flicking on a lamp. She wasn’t expecting a response, Dorothy was clearly a very young baby right now. Glinda walked over to the side of the crib, making Dorothy’s cries slow into whimpers. The girl instantly reached up, pouting.
“Ah, you lost your pacifier, hmm?”
Glinda reached down to tickle Dorothy’s cheek, making her squeal and smile. Glinda found the lost pacifier next to Dorothy’s unicorn, picking it up and waving it about.
“Got it! Here, my little Dollie.” She smiled, pressing it to Dorothy’s mouth, who instantly accepted it. “There you go.” She muttered, scooping her up and bundling the girl in her arms.
She crossed back over to her own room, settling Dorothy between herself and Elphaba.
Dorothy babbled around her pacifier, giggling and clapping her hands.
Elphaba pinched the bridge of her nose. “It’s very early, darling.”
Dorothy’s eyes widened and she cooed at Elphaba, wriggling until she could poke at her cheek.
Galinda laughed, Elphaba scowled.
“Lighten up, dearest. She just wants to play!”
Dorothy squealed at the sound of Glinda’s voice, babbling, “Mom-ee,” over again.
Elphaba leaned closer, a crease between her brows. “Say Elphaba.” She whispered.
“E—Ef—Ba!” The little declared, then continued to say “Babababa.”
“Why do you get Mommy and I get Baba?”
“Because, I am her mommy.”
Elphaba rolled her eyes, slumping back down to cuddle with her girls.
Nobody knew how long Dorothy would be in Oz for, or if she was ever going to leave, but nobody seemed to mind.
Dorothy wasn’t too fond of her life before, always working away for her Aunt Em’s farm, who didn’t really care about her to begin with.
Glinda and Elphaba never thought about having children, they were too busy running Oz after the Wizard and Madame Morrible had destroyed it, who were thankfully taken care of now, both banished out of Oz forever. It wasn’t until a cyclone occurred in the middle of the night and caused Dorothy’s house to fly away and land in Oz, was when they realized they enjoyed caring for a little one.
Nobody knows what the future holds, but right now, in their palace, the girls knew one thing. They were going to love and cherish this girl for as long as they were allowed to.
Later, Dorothy was feeling extra little. She was very clingy, meaning Elphaba was having to hold her and carry her.
Glinda found them after her meeting, and instantly softened.
“Hi, my loves.”
Dorothy turned to look at her, head still resting on Elphaba’s shoulder. Her pink pacifier was held firmly in her mouth, and her most favorite blankie was gripped in her hands.
“There’s my baby!” She exclaimed, booping Dorothy’s nose.
Dorothy hummed, reaching a hand out to her.
“Are you coming to Mommy?” Glinda asked, arms wide. Dorothy contemplated for a moment, then let Glinda take her.
“She’s been like this all day. I’ve gotten no work done!” Elphaba scowled, crossing her arms.
“Don’t be so harsh, Elphie. She’s just a baby.” Glinda said, bouncing the girl on her hip. But, the moment Dorothy muttered, “Baba,” she immediately softened.
“I’m still here, Dollie.”
Dorothy wrapped her hand around Elphaba’s fingers, relaxing with the comfort of her caregivers.
"Baba, out?" She mumbled, voice impossible tiny and sweet. She didn't talk much at this age, only when she needed something.
Elphaba smiled softly at her, "Yeah, we can go out into the gardens. How about we look at the pretty butterflies again?" She asked, scooping Dorothy back into her arms and walking towards the doors.
Glinda beamed. She was so excited that Elphaba was finally being kind towards her. As much as she loved being Dorothy's main caregiver, she loved sharing the responsibility with her girlfriend. They'd gone through so much together already, with fighting the Wizard and all, so now that she could finally be with her Elphie, happily showing her off as Ozians started trusting Elphaba, it was all she ever wanted. Yes, Fiyero still lived in the palace with them, but he wasn't much of a bother.
And, although Dorothy was getting close to Elphaba, she still knew who held her from the beginning. At bedtime, she always asked for Glinda, her hand clutching Glinda's shirt and only falling asleep in her arms. Elphaba didn't mind though, sometimes it took hours to get Dorothy down at night, so she'd happily leave her girlfriend to do that.
