Work Text:
Genya glares at Sanemi's back, hurt lacing through his veins harshly as his older brother walks away.
The words he'd just spit in his face echo through Genya, "You're not good enough to be a slayer!"
"Do you honestly believe I'd take that shit to heart?" asks Genya loudly, voice cracking as Sanemi stiffens. "I've made significant progress, Hashira. I've slayed many demons, and I'm not fucking done yet. So, you can either get over yourself and be my big brother again, or you can fuck off. I wanted to apologize for what I said, and that's it. You got your apology, Sanemi, but now you owe me one."
"I'm not apologizing for shit," snaps Sanemi as he turns around, glare so cold that Genya would've shattered under it, if he hadn't been subjected to it before. "You shouldn't have become a goddamn slayer, Genya. I did this to protect you, so you never had to fucking worry about it again for the rest of your life. So you could grow old, live, survive without worry of a death that's not natural. I didn't want you to fucking be here!"
"That's not your goddamn decision!" sneers Genya harshly, eyes burning with tears that are threatening to fall. "It's mine! And I chose this. No matter how fucking difficult, no matter how close to death I gotta come. I am going to make this up to you, to myself, and I'm going to be useful goddammit! I couldn't do anything back then, Sanemi, I didn't understand what was happening. But I can now, so get the hell over it!"
"Genya," Sanemi's voice is harsh, angry and surprised at the way Genya's reacting.
"No," snaps Genya coldly, shutting himself down as tears slip free on a harsh blink. "I don't want to fucking hear it. I made my decision, and I don't need your goddamn permission. Goodbye, Sanemi."
Genya turns and walks away, tears sliding heavily down his cheeks, breaking him in ways he never expected to be broken. His heart hurts, his mind hurts, everything fucking hurts.
But he said his piece, and whether Sanemi wants him to or not, he's chosen this life. And he's damn sure not going to do anything half-way.
