March 27th. It was James´s birthday, and everyone was invited which might have been because James had an unhealthy need for everyone to love him.
At Hogwarts, his birthday party was the most anticipated annual event that not even the post-finals party or the secret Yule Ball after-party could match. Firewhiskey, smokes, and a bunch of muggle made “funny” substances were always brought in, the music was always on point, and nobody could resist, not even the Slytherins when James started singing and got everyone hyped.
However, something had been bothering Lily. It wasn’t that James had stopped trying to get her to agree to go out with him; Merlin knows he was persistent. But since last year, he’d been, less insistent… which don´t get her wrong, was not the end of the world.
However, something happened recently when the Gryffindors held a secret party in the boy’s dorm room, just as James birthday week celebrations started (as if a day wasn’t enough).
The “bottle” game had been very quickly adopted at Hogwarts after Sirius introduced it, and it had been fun, very fun. She got to kiss Regulus and Dorcas, which granted, was fun, James had kissed Evan and Barty, and even Sirius used it as an excuse to declare his feelings to Remus.
“Sirius, I don’t think you’re supposed to purposely stop the bottle”
“Shut up Peter” it was Remus who said that before Sirius took a leap and started to make out with him, hard, very hard.
“So… do we keep playing…or…?” asked Regulus. James´s eyes flickered with nervousness.
Lily could have sworn Regulus enchanted the bottle for the way it stopped so abruptly in James´s direction, no one else had said anything, Mary and Marls said they hadn’t seen anything. But Lily saw it, and Sirius agreed that James and Regulus seemed to have enjoyed the kiss a little too much.
It could be nothing, but something in her brain made Lily´s feelings felt a little, just a little… okay granted, maybe a little too overwhelmed when James and Regulus kissed.

“It was the night before my birthday. Not a soul was stirring. Because you´re all lame!”
“James” Sirius´s voice came from under Remus´s arms “Do you even know what time it is?”
“Its time for you to wake up! Because my birthday it’s in two minutes” Remus yawned, waking up and making Sirius feel cold when Remus´s arms let go of him.

“Mate, I don’t think that’s how that works” James rolled his eyes.
“Peter, when have you ever known me to attend classes on my birthday?” Peter sat on his bed.
“Oh yeah I forgot. You are a chronic offender.” said Peter. Sirius finally woke up, but he still did not let Remus get his arms off of him.
“So are you proposing the rest of us skip class, too? I don’t think Moony will go for it”
“I will not, because I´m not getting in trouble for you James… again.”
“But it’s my birthday! You have to spend time with me, come on Pads we always skipped classes on my birthday”
“And we will spend time with you, after class.” and James hated that about their relationship, ever since they got together, Sirius would do whatever Remus told him to do, including not skipping classes.
“Besides, I’m surprised you don’t want to tell everyone it’s your birthday, maybe Evan will give you a birthday kiss”
“Oh Sirius didn’t you know? Evan isn’t the one on James´s mind anymore. In fact, it´s- ahRjaEbhGjabUsdLbajUmaSle” and James covered Peter´s mouth with his hand.

“Solely because it’s your birthday in 10 seconds. I won’t fight you on this”
“I’ll consider it my birthday present” and with that James left the room.

She and Severus hadn’t spoken in months, and Regulus wasn’t going to ask. He had enjoyed Lily´s company over the last few months, and even though he knew that at first, Lily had sought him out just to piss Severus, the truth was that they had grown bond with each other.

“Because I said so.” And when Dorcas used that tone, Barty knew better than to try to argue.
“Ehm… can we talk about what should I do?”

“Barty…forget it, just come clean about it and everything will be ok” Evan´s advice was actually, what Regulus had been avoiding, and he didn’t want to actually do it.
“What if you… just…ask James to come and kiss you, without even kissing Lily?” all eyes turned to look at Marlene.
“What are you saying, Marls?” asked Dorcas, smiling, while her fingers combed Marlene´s hair.
“I mean, if he doesn’t notice, then you would know it’s about you and not just because of Lily” and Regulus actually liked how that plan sounded. If anything happened, he could just leave James and stay with Lily.
“Marls,” said Dorcas when Regulus left the room.
“Yes darling?”
“I see what you did there”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about”
“Yeah, you do” and Dorcas kissed Marlene´s lips.
“Yeah, I do” and Marls smiled against her lips.
That night, Regulus met James in the usual spot…

The name of the potion was a secret, and that was the test, whoever could brew the potion correctly, would be awarded 50 points and get an OWL. The trick was that no one knew which potion they were making, so when the potions start to gain different colors and odors… no one knew who was doing it right and who was making it wrong.
Suddenly, all eyes landed on Severus´s cauldron. “Oh! It´s perfect Severus! 50 points to Slytherin!” Anyone who had walked into that classroom would be able to tell; even Slytherins were pissed at how fast Severus had manage to get it perfectly.
The professor´s wand was quick to point at the chalkboard and “Amortentia” was now written in Slughorn’s calligraphy. The eyes of everybody in the classroom opened with surprise, and now Severus was transformed into the most popular boy in the classroom. Severus, put the lid on his cauldron before anyone can get any closer, vanishing its contents, but letting everyone see as he hid a vial between his robes.

But things change, people change, and this wasn’t the reconciliation she wanted, but the one that was happening. They hadn’t spoken in a whole year, but she knew they already forgiven each other.
“I just… want to smell it” Severus´s face frowned.

“Please don’t tell anybody” Severus smiled was filled with embarrassment “He started using it on second year so people would love him”

“What? Why?” Lily gasped, as if this was the most scandalous thing that had ever happened inside Hogwarts´s walls.
“I… he and Peter have been having this…whatever it is they have going on”
“Don’t tell me about it; they cost me 15 galleons since September” Severus snorted, laughing.
“Of course you bet on them”
“I mean… have they decided what they have going on?”
“I don’t think so, no” Lily had missed this “But I´m planning on giving him the news today, at James´s party, I guess you already see where I´m heading”
“I do. Has it worked?”
“So far, Peter is the only one that has been consistently trying to figure out what perfume Gilderoy wears.” Lily laughed. Severus really had missed this.
“I just hope, they figure it out.”
“We all do.”
“I mean, with Remus and Sirius, at least they were just touchy and corny…but Peter and Gilderoy… they act so…”
“Awkward, yeah. Believe me; we all think that… anyway… See you at James´s party, then?” Lily nodded and handed the vial to Severus.
“Watch this.” Severus hold the vial over a plant with several thorns and then he turned the vial upside down. The plant transformed into a beautiful rosebush “It still has thorns, though.” And Lily knew they were okay. Maybe it will never be like before, but they were alright.

“Well, I guess I don’t have to look for a date for James´s party”
“Taking me for granted?” said Evan, pretending to be hurt.
“Never” and this time Barty was the one who kissed Evan.
“That was like… very gay” Barty rolled his eyes, and Evan pecked his cheek.
“For you Evan, I will be gay” Barty held Evan´s face “For you Evan, I will not let go of your hand when we feel their eyes on us.” Evan started to cry, and Barty held him because life seemed better with Evan. Without him, what would the point of life even be?

“Oh. I know you would.” Mary took Sybill´s hand in hers and followed her upstairs; people could hear them rushing out of sight.

“Yes?”
