On the Cutting Room Floor

Summary:

Scenes from "Heart of Silk and Sawdust" that didn't make the cut either for story purposes or because they're from a POV that's not Boq and Nessa's and that they wouldn't be privy to.

Chapter 1: Boq and Tibbett, set during "Ch. 8, Cabin Fever"

Chapter Text

It was late when Boq awoke, the only light coming from the desk lamp on Tibbett's desk. His lanky roommate with straw-colored hair looked up from his work and smiled.

"Good to have you back," he said.

"Glad to be back," Boq yawned. "What time is it?"

"Near midnight. Fiyero left a while ago, but he said he'd be back in the morning."

Boq hummed as he took a drink from the cup of water left for him on the table. He pulled up the soft blue blanket and closed his eyes, ready to fall back asleep again.

"Boq, can I ask you something?"

He opened his eyes. "Yes?"

Tibbett twirled his pencil between his fingers, a smile teasing his lips. "Fiyero gave you mouth-to-mouth, right? How was that like?"

Boq stared at him, but time didn't make the question make anymore sense.

"I was dead, Tibbett."

His roommate had the wherewithal to look at least a little embarrassed.

"Oh! I thought you just passed out a little bit, so you'd still feel something?"

"Who told you that?"

"The Gazette mentioned Fiyero saving you from drowning but wasn't really detailed so I just assumed it wasn't that serious."

Boq blinked at him. "I have two cracked ribs. Did Fiyero not tell you anything?"

Tibbett bit the eraser on his pencil.

"I don't know. I'm sure he must have said something, but I don't remember anything but his blue eyes," he sighed, then straightened up. "Please don't tell him that when he comes tomorrow morning."

Boq pulled the blanket up to his chin and closed his eyes anything. "Your secret is safe with me. Good night."

"Good night." A few moments later, Tibbett grumbled under his breath, "Lucky bastard."
