Summary:

"Jyn stood there for several minutes, unsure what exactly she was waiting for. Maybe for her skin to finally slough off her body and leave her in peace. Maybe for Cassian to reappear again, the way he’d collided into her life over and over since their first meeting a mere few months ago. Maybe for her idiot brain to finally come to its senses, and stop making her act like the heroine in one of the ridiculous Coruscanti novels she used to download behind her mother’s back."

The price of resurrection.

Notes:

Happy Andor release day!

This is a weird one for me. I've seen maybe a quarter, max, of all Star Wars media, but I rewatched Rogue One last fall and got literally brainwashed or something, because I went and consumed the entire body of rebelcaptain work on AO3 in about two weeks. I wrote five chapters of this in the next two weeks, took a break to apply to grad school, continued writing, took another break to interview for grad school, and now I've been accepted so I figure I should finish it off. It's been marinating in my drafts for nearly eight months and I am astonished my hyperfixation didn't disappear in the meantime.

This is HEAVILY inspired by the incredible skitzofreak's "Message Traffic" series, to the extent that it's allllllllllmost an AU of an AU. I never thought this would see the light of day (or get finished) when I started, so it's probably more inspired than it should be. I hope it still toes the line of respectful tribute without dipping into straight-up plagiarism, but if you ever see this, skitzofreak, please let me know. I was really taken by the idea of the documents and data that will survive the Rebellion, and all the messy mortal in-between bits that won't.

A final note: this is meticulously researched (as you'll see in my notes) but extremely unbetaed, so I welcome all feedback! Please enjoy!

Chapter 1: Subject: Rogue One Medical Evaluation Results

Chapter Text

"When I met you, I thought I was damaged goods
Had a fucked up childhood
And there's poison in my brain and in my blood

If you knew it was the end of the world, could you love me like a child?
Could you hold me in the dark?

If you knew it was the end of the world, would you like to stay a while?
Would you leave when it gets hard?"

- Halsey, "The End"

Notes:

Fucking date MADNESS. I got multiple migraines trying to figure out the calendar system, but for the mildest amount of context, I am using the Coruscanti reckoning calendar (what appears to be the most common system pre-Battle of Yavin). Jyn was arrested on 7976.994.5 and spends six months in prison. The arrest warrant was issued for Leia on 7977.331.3. Rogue One and New Hope occur over the span of like two weeks. Despite this, the Battle of Scarif somehow occurred in 7976 while the Battle of Yavin occurred in 7977. Infer from this whatever the fuck you want, because apparently CRC dates before Andor were literally based on "vibes". I promise the dates in this fic at least have internal consistency.
