The Child of Eclipse

Summary:

The Sun brings warmth. The Moon brings cool.
Once, they brought joy to each other until the heavens forbade it.
Now cursed to orbit in loneliness, Tum the Sun King and Phone the Moon Prince can only reunite during eclipses and dream of each other beneath the horizon.
But from one of their stolen moments, a child is born.

His name is Jummo.
And he will never move from the sky, so the world never forgets the love that made him.

Work Text:

Long before mortals named the stars,

When the sky still remembered how to dream,

The Sun and the Moon were not kings and curses,

They were only two little boys.

“Daddy, can you tell us the story about the Sun King and the Moon Prince? I really want Domiia and Tomafox to hear it. It’s such a cool story!”

“What’s so cool about a sun and moon story?” asked Domiia, playfully rolling his eyes at his younger cousin.

“I was named after one of the characters in it!! That’s what’s so cool!” Jummo laughed and sat down on the couch with his bowl of popcorn.

Tomafox groaned and teased Jummo, “Of course you’d want to hear a story “about” you. It does sound cool though. Please tell us, Uncle Junior!”

Mark’s laughter was heard from the kitchen as he encouraged his husband, Junior, to sit down and tell Jummo’s favorite creation myth to the three young teenagers.

“Okay, sure, get yourselves comfortable and grab some snacks from Uncle Mark. Then I’ll tell the story.” Junior smiled warmly and pushed his glasses up. He enjoyed their family moments and would happily share the story closest to his heart.

The Sun King & The Moon Prince

Once upon a time, in the earliest days of space and silence, Tum, child of fire, and Phone, born of shadowlight, played in the cradles of galaxies. They were inseparable. Two souls who fit together so naturally that the cosmos never questioned it.

The two boys raced along nebula winds, shaped constellations from dust, and whispered their dreams into the voids of black holes. Wherever Tum’s laughter burned, Phone’s soft glow followed. And where Phone drifted in silence, Tum would light his way without needing to ask why.

However, as time passed on and they grew up, the Celestial Council called Tum to ascend his final form. “The world must wake. Your warmth must stir the oceans and seeds, or life will never begin.”

Tum begged. Phone wept. They were told love had no place in balance. The heavens demanded order, not affection.

So Phone was cursed. He would cool the Earth in sorrow, rising only when Tum set. Each would rule alone – day and night, warmth and cold, presence and absence. They were made opposites not by nature, but by duty.

Stolen Time

Once in an age, the universe would turn its gaze. In those rare, silent moments, the Earth dared to hold its breath, and the Sun King and the Moon Prince would meet. The sky darkens not in fear, but in reverence to their love. The world falls quiet, as if even the wind must kneel.

An eclipse.

Tum and Phone do not speak out loud. To them, words would fracture something too sacred. And during one such event, in the hush of a single breath, their foreheads touched. A tear falls from Phone’s lashes and turns into stardust. Tum places his hand over it, and it bursts into light. They are flame and frost in perfect stillness.

And then, between them, in that stillness – a star is born .

☀️🌙🌟

The Son of Eclipse

He is not made. He is born from longing, defiance, and the only moments their love was allowed to exist. They named him Jummo. He shone with the softness of moonlight and the warmth of sunlight. His pulse is the rhythm of two aching hearts.

The Celestial Council tried to silence him. They veil him in clouds, deny his existence, say stars must spin, and nothing may stand still in the heavens.

But Jummo does not move. He takes his place above the world as the North Star .

Unblinking, unyielding. A child who will not be erased. “While my fathers circle the sky,” he whispers, “I will remain. So no one ever forgets what love can create.”

☀️🌙🌟

Jummo matures. He watches over lovers on Earth who must part and guides them back to one another. He glows brightest on nights when the Moon Prince and the Sun King dream of each other from beneath the horizon. During eclipses, mortals might feel a tug in their soul, a reminder that somewhere beyond sight, love waits in the shadows and burns in the light. He finds joy in helping others find what his parents were denied – a life where love does not need to hide.

“I was born of a moment the universe tried to forget. So, I shine, not to be remembered, but so others don’t have to be hidden.”

He is the guiding flame in the night, speaking to certain mortals in dreams, especially lost children or lovers. Jummo guides them with intuition, and they simply “know” which path to take when they look to him. Ancient travelers passed down to their children, “Follow the Child of Eclipse, and you will never be alone or lost for long.”

☀️🌙🌟

Stargazers say Jummo wears an invisible crown of solar flame and moonlight mist, and during eclipses, his crown becomes a visible but brief halo in the sky. It’s how the world knows his parents have found each other again, even if just for a moment. Jummo is proud of his parents, but also lonely. He only gets to witness their fleeting reunions.

When Tum the Sun King sets, he casts a soft trail behind him. Phone the Moon Prince rises just behind, picking up the gold like a promise not quite broken. They can’t hold hands, but they leave light and silver in each other’s wake. Their son watches from above, cradling their love in his heart, and he never, ever turns away.

☀️🌙🌟

“The end. What do you guys think?” Junior asked his nephews, Domiia and Tomafox. He moved over to let his husband sit down next to him, squeezing him between Jummo and Mark. “Hey, there’s a lot of room here, you know!” He laughed as he pushed the both of them over more.

Domiia and Tomafox fought over the last piece of pizza as they shared their thoughts on the story.

“Hey, I grabbed it first! So, Uncle, why did the celestial jerks not let them be happy?” said Tomafox.

“No, I looked at it first! You named Jummo after their kid? Is that why he thinks he’s so special?” Laughed Domiia as he punched Tomafox in the arm.

“Jummo was our little star when he came into our lives, so it fit,” said Mark. He ruffled Jummo’s hair and gave him a kiss on the forehead.

“Awwww Dada, you’re embarrassing me!” He said, but didn’t mean it because he enjoyed the affection his fathers gave him. He knew that he was a truly special boy. His fathers had told him about how the adoption agency told them he had been born during a lunar eclipse and his birth mother gave him up because she couldn’t afford to take care of him and wanted better for him. They had also told him how a solar eclipse had happened on the day they went to meet him for the very first time. And since his daddy was a university professor who taught mythology and folklore, he felt that the perfect name for this child of eclipses should be “Jummo.”

“Okay, the first episode is starting! I’ve been waiting for ‘Cat for Cash’ to come out,” said Tomafox, as he grabbed the rest of the popcorn from the kitchen.

Anyone that wasn’t already sitting grabbed a comfy spot on one of the couches and settled in for the night.

☀️🌙🌟

High above in the night sky, Jummo, the Child of Eclipse, smiled down on the happy little household. He shone a little brighter that night, knowing that his guiding light had helped the fathers of Tomafox, Domiia, and Jummo find their way to each other when they were once lost and lonely.
