Am I Only Dreaming?

Summary:

After speaking with his brother, Lan Wangji goes to squeeze more details out of Wei Wuxian.

Notes:

A little interlude I worked up in hashing some things out for potentially a proper sequel.

Work Text:

"Lan Zhan, I'm dying," Wei Ying groaned, flopping back onto his unmade hotel bed after letting Lan Zhan in. "Do I smell coffee? You are a god among men."

"Mn."

"Ugh, you're so evil, you're going to make me sit up, aren't you?"

Lan Zhan didn't say anything. Verbally expressing his inhuman agony, Wei Ying rolled over until his legs flopped over the edge of the mattress and the momentum helped him get something like upright. He held out his hand imploringly, and one of the hotel mugs appeared in it. "See, I knew you loved me."

With his eyes closed, he missed the expression that flickered across Lan Zhan's face.

"You would not believe the night I had," he went on, oblivious.

"Wei Ying."

Holding up the hand without the coffee, Wei Ying wagged a finger in self-defence. "I know what you're going to say, but we were celebrating! Your brother—uh."

Wei Ying cracked one eye open. Maybe Lan Zhan hadn't noticed?

But there was a subtle frown between Lan Zhan's graceful eyebrows, like he already knew something was going on. "Last night. Did xiongzhang really..." He trailed off.

Had someone told him? Wei Ying had thought they were all too drunk to be up at—actually, he had no idea what time it was. Mid-afternoon?

"Ahaha, was that for real then?" The details were a little fuzzy, if he was being honest. And, well, Vegas. "Don't worry, Lan Zhan! I had your back with the best man duties. Aw, don't look at me like that! Maybe we should have woken you up, but everything happened so fast!"

Lan Zhan did not look reassured. "This...Meng Yao. What kind of person is he?"

"Oh my god, such a bitch, can you believe he actually hosed me down with the fire extinguisher? Like I would have actually set the place on fire."

Okay, so maybe that hadn't been the best response. Wei Ying tried drinking more coffee in the probably futile hope that it would fill his head with more thinking and less stabbing percussion instruments.

"No, no, I didn't mean it like that," he tried again. "It's more like he's got zero tolerance for bullshit. But you'd never know it, he's super polite—not like me, ha ha. And your brother's the least bullshit person I know, so he's got nothing to worry about, really. And he's smart! Like, crazy smart. He used to work for the Nie, that's how Huaisang knows him; nowadays he's like a consultant or something? Goes all over the place."

"So he is an...honourable person?" Lan Zhan ventured in what, for him, was a dubious tone of voice.

Moving his head from side to side turned out to be a very no good bad idea, ow. Lan Zhan took his hand and put a few pills in it, then switched his coffee for a glass of water. Wei Ying downed both gratefully. "The best seriously. Uh, what was I saying? Meng Yao, right. Um, I mean, he's got standards. Like that whole Jin Guangshan thing? All him."

"Xiongzhang...he would not...take advantage."

Even in his current state, Wei Ying had not trouble reading this as he'd better not take advantage. "Uhhh, let me tell you, we were all sauced to the gills. Yaoyao is and I mean severely allergic to anything even vaguely adjacent to making a fool of himself in public, it is his greatest failing as a person, I have to say. I will bet you cash money he's more freaked out about this than Xichen is—oh my god."

He'd taken out his phone with the thought that a look at some of the disgustingly romantic wedding pictures might reassure Lan Zhan a little when a message notification popped up.

"Wei Ying?"

"Oh my god, Lan Zhan, Huaisang says they don't remember any of it!" Wei Ying doubled over cackling. "Oh my god, neither of them? Did you know about this? This is too good."
