Work Text:
Tommy felt nervous as they approached the restaurant. Evan had talked him into attending his twenty-fifth high school reunion when he initially planned to skip it, and he hoped they didn’t regret this. He hadn’t seen most of these people in a very long time, and a lot had changed in the years since graduation. Evan squeezed his hand, trying his very best to support his husband. “There’s nothing to be nervous about.”
“You didn’t go to your high school reunion,” Tommy pointed out, a wry grin on his face.
Evan rolled his eyes. “I will go to my next one just so you and Maddie finally shut the fuck up about it, how about that?” he capitulated.
Tommy chuckled. “Good enough for me. Let’s head in.” They walked into the restaurant, hand in hand. The heads of the reunion committee had reserved this place so they had the place to themselves all night. “Thomas Kinard, and this is my husband, Evan,” he informed the person in charge of keeping track of all of the guests.
She handed over the nametags and then sent them on their way. “Everything okay so far?” Evan checked.
“Not an issue in sight yet but we’ll see how this plays out,” Tommy told him.
They were just about to order some drinks when one of Tommy’s old classmates came up to them. “Tommy Kinard? Look at you!” his delighted classmate said.
Tommy did a double take. “Rachel?” he asked.
Rachel nodded then waved her hand in Evan’s direction. “And who is this lucky man?”
Tommy beamed, happy to show off the love of his life. “This is my husband, Evan. He’s also a firefighter.”
Evan shook Rachel’s hand. “Nice to meet you.”
“Also nice to meet you. Tommy, you have some fantastic taste in men.” Rachel winked at him, and then the three of them engaged in a conversation for about fifteen minutes. They did get a chance to order some drinks, however.
Much to Tommy’s relief, most of his classmates were thrilled to meet Evan and didn’t say one word about his sexuality. There were a few shitty outliers but those homophobes were ignored or shut down.
They sat down to eat (everything pre-ordered so the kitchen staff wasn’t cooking anything last minute) and Evan decided to finally complain about the music. “Why is it so bad?”
Tommy kissed him. “Enjoy the music that permeated our time in high school, Evan.”
Buck heaved a dramatic sigh. “Fine.”
The reunion went much better than Tommy expected it to, and he was so thankful to have the man he loved by his side all night.
