Chapter Text
When Fiyero woke up in the field he was sure he was dead. The strange part was he wasn't hurt. His broken bones seemingly healed, his bruised skin no longer stung. In fact he felt nothing.
The sun was rising slowly, slightly blinding him. He wasn't sure what day it was, or how long had it been since I had seen Elphaba?
Elphaba.
His eyes snapped open as he struggled against the post holding him up. He needed to get to her, wherever she was. His arms pulled at the ropes holding him, his feet tugging at the post.
It was no use, he was stuck here, alone. He let out a breath his body going limp against the post. He lifted his head and looked around, he could at least know where he was.
The field stretched for what seemed like miles, crows flying above head, and a hideous yellow brick road that split in 3 directions. He couldn't for the life of him think of where they lead, his head hurt.
Pain, a dull throbbing, finally something. He smiled, he could still feel things, he was still alive. Though that was probably the reason he couldn't think straight, those guards gave him a concussion. It was also the reason the rest of his body didn't hurt, something in his head.
He lifted his head fully to try to see further, his eyes straining against the sunlight, there was nothing, just the farm and the wheat field. No people, and no Animals, nobody to help but those dammed crows.
They had been circling above him for a while, their caws filling the empty space. They seemed to be taunting him, or maybe they were waiting for him to die, for his corpse to cook in the sun. Surely that wouldn't happen, at some point someone will come and rescue him. He was important, wasn't he? He couldn't quite remember if he was, he meant something he knew that, just not what.
This concussion would be the death of him he was sure. He tugged at the rope around his hand again, hopefully if he loosened it he could get the rest of his body free. Oz maybe he could squeeze out of it.
He moved his arm towards himself, his eye catching something on his sleeve. A few yellow stands of something poking out of his green uniform. It was ripped, and batted but there was no blood on it. He felt his heat shrink, his eyes widened.
Where was the blood, why was there straw, what was happening. He kept pulling at the rope, eventually ripping his hand free. He quickly reached over and ripped at the rope bringing both of his hands in front of him.
When he looked at them he felt sick, he wasn't himself, not fully. His once flesh was now a rough fabric that coated his hands, straw poking out from under the sleeves. Quickly he looked down at his body his heart again dropping at what he saw. it was the same all over. bits of straw poking out of holes he must have gotten when he was string up.
His hands went quickly to his face, he was almost the same except for the rough fabric skin and straw like hair.
He tried to think of how this could have happened his head still hurting, the dull throbbing getting more extreme. There was nothing, nothing that came to mind. Almost as if his brain was gone and replaced with hay.
It hit him then, it wasn't the throb of there being something there, but the lack of something he had.
His brain.
He felt panicked, this heart racing. Where was his brain? He knew a little, Elphaba being one of the only things he remembered. He tried to picture her, her soft skin, he bright smile, her laugh, her eyes. He felt his heart slow, he knew she did this, to save him.
He remembered the small flashes to being beaten, his ribs cracking, piercing his insides, his skin bloodied and bruised, the tears that ran through the blood from a head wound, the screams that made his throat hurt. She did this to stop that, to stop him feeling the pain.
He looked up at the crows in the sky, they weren't waiting to eat him, they were actually taunting him. Taunting the scarecrow he now was.
He had to get away from this post, to get to Elphaba. He was trying to unite the rope from behind him when he heard foot steps.
When he looked up he saw a young girl, with dark brown hair and a blue dress, a dog held in her arms.
"Hello"
Fiyero smiled when the girl looked up at him, a shocked look on her face.
"You look lost" he continued.
She nodded still shocked, her eyes looking him up and down.
"Where are you going? "
Finally the girl snapped out of it her head shaking slightly. When she spoke she sounded young, her voice having an Accent he could quite make out.
"The emerald City, to see the wizard"
The wizard, a man flashed into his head, his grey hair covering his eyes an evil smile spreading over the rest of his face.
"Do you know of him? "
Fiyero shook his head, his mind clearing of the man.
"No, but I don't know much about anything nowadays"
The girl looked at him confused, her arms crossing.
"What do you mean"
"It seems I don't have a brain"
The confusion deeped and he resisted the urge to laugh. She spoke after a few long moments, the confusion still there.
"How can you speak without a brain? "
Fiyero smiled a small chuckle escaping his lips.
"Many people with no brains do an awful lot of talking"
She smiled and chuckle the confusion gone from her face, she started to extend her hand but almost instantly disided against it.
"I'm Dorothy"
Fiyero smiled and tipped his head in a small bow.
"A pleasure to meet you Dorothy"
She smiled waiting as if she wanted his name. He could give it to her, she didn't seem to be from around here, but he wasn't sure, her shoes looked Oz made the rest of her not so much.
"Scarecrow" he settled on watching as she smiled.
"How original"
"I do try, but I'm very bad at my job" he looked up at the crows above him, still going around in circles, their caws still filling the air. "They have been taughting me for hours"
Dorothy looked up towards the crows then back at Fiyero, "seems like it"
Fiyero gave her a crooked smile. He still wasn't fully sure of who she was, just that she was nice, maybe she could help him.
"Dorothy, why are you going to the wizard? "
She looked up at him her face set with determination. "To get home"
There it was, she wasn't from here, she didn't know who he was, she was just a girl trying to get home.
"Do you think he could give me a brain" he felt sick asking the wizard about anything but it's the only hope he had, this girl couldn't go alone, besides now he had someone to help him down.
She nodded smiling brightly.
"Could you help me down? I'm a bit stuck"
Dorothy quickly claimed over the fence to untie the rope letting him down.
He hit the ground hard still feeling nothing, his legs felt weak, but what was he to suspect, he was made of straw now.
Dorothy quickly helped him up leaning him on the fence.
"I am so sorry, I... "
"It's not your fault, I just need some support" he looked around, not a tree in sight. He turned back to his stand and ripped the top bar from the bottom.
"This should do"
Dorothy helped him out of the field and he was met with a small dog.
"Don't mind toto, he's just excited"
Fiyero looked down at the small black pup and nodded.
"Very well, shall we"
Dorothy nodded. "We shall"
The set off down the road in the opposite direction of where she came from, surely this must be they way. They weren't sure, but what choice did they have.
So they were off, off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz.
