On her drive from Queens, NY Vanessa Rojas was stopped once each in Indiana (South Bend), Ohio (Toledo and Cleveland); for
exceeding the speed limit... by the time she stops to stretch her legs and down a coffee or two on the freeway outside Allentown,
Pennsylvania she decided to 'slow her roll'; these traffic stops are time-consuming and NO ONE - especially the man she loves -
benefits if she were injured or killed in a car crash. She reached that conclusion after reflecting on the conversation that prompted
her road trip:

previously

Queens NY Narcotics Unit:

Detective Mendez-"OYES; ROJAS !" (Hey Rojas)

Vanessa-"QUIERES, Carajo !" (What, Donkey)

Mendez-"Te hablan !" (Telephone)

Vanessa-"Voy! " (Coming)

"Rojas."

Sniffling, a familiar female voice says softly "Hey, V."

"HAILS! What is it: 3, 4 months? Hey...estas llorando, Chica ?" (are you crying, Girl?)

Snuffling loudly, Upton blew her nose and replied "Kev...Kev's shot, V. It's..."

"UH...hol' up...wait a second" - Rojas can't catch her breath for a few seconds, gasping loudly and slumping against the wall. "V?! BREATHE,
Vanessa; we'll do it together: in, out; in, out...good, good...better?"

Vanessa says "Yeah. Better. Hails - tell me everything."

Intelligence Unit-Sergeant Hank Voight; Detectives Kevin Atwater, Kim Burzek, Sergeant Tom Doyle, Jay Halstead, Vanessa
Rojas, Adam Ruzek, Hailey Upstead

Jay, Hailey, and Kim drove over to Med; Adam and Voight were 'running down' the coward Tom Doyle, who never showed
for roll call the day after his attack on Atwater - the two lawmen have a mandate from Acting Superintendent Samantha Miller
to QUOTE: "The attempted murder of Detective Kevin Atwater was cowardly, unconscionable, and above all disgustingly RACIST:
I want his head on my wall - Voight, Ruzek - get into him and run him to ground. Don't come back without him, Sergeant."

Voight stood and replied, "You got it, Deputy Sup."

*********

The rental sedan roared out of an alley at Seaside Parkway and Corona Avenue; Patrol Sgt Ryan Tanner flipped on his 'berries and
cherries' -the blue and red lights on his police cruiser - and fell in behind it...it's the middle of the day and the city streets are parsley
populated, enabling Ryan to catch up to the car at the next stoplight. The car turns left at the next street and stops. "Patrol to 229 to
Dispatch."

"Go for dispatch, 229."

"Dispatch show me 10-19 [traffic stop] on a late model Dodge Challenger - Washington tag Alpha Sierra Delta 4557...my '20' is
Main and Capestrano Av...request 10-28 [vehicle information]."

"Copy you, 229...hold one."

++LoreJohns++

"Copy you, dispatch." Approaching the driver-side window (which he noticed was already DOWN) he hesitated before stepping closer:
"Hi, Sir...would you switch off the engine please."

The driver replied cordially "Of course, Sarge. By the way, I'm a Detective Sergeant out of Chi-Town; I'm reaching over to turn off
the car, cool?" Ryan nodded. "My shield's in my inside jacket pocket."

Tanner said, "Go ahead, Sarge." His Chicago DL verified his identity as Thomas. M. Doyle and his Gold shield is confirmation of
his LEO (Law Enforcement Officer). The passenger passed over HIS 'creds' - Sgt. Miguel Mendez - also Chigago PD. "What d'ya say, my
man - professional courtesy?" Tanner doesn't notice the driver edging a derringer hidden under the leather sleeve of his jacket into
the hand closest to the driver-side door.

"Patrol 229...be advised of an urgent bulletin re occupants: break contact and do not detain; rolling squads to your location"-at that
moment Doyle fires twice, striking Ryan in the vest above his heart and creasing his neck; as he launches himself backward Mendez
gets off a shot before Doyle burns off, tires smoking. Groaning, Tanner triggers his mic and shouts "10-13; officer down - same location -
vehicle fleeing 10-19 West Capetrsano...request ambo and [AH!] expedite squad response!"

// into the PRT and roll out of the vehicle bay; at the downtown Police Plaza the same announcement sounds, Cheif Of D's Lucas Ripley
snatches his suit jacket announcing "Everyone goes!" on his way to the exit, followed by everyone save the Vice, Auto Theft, and Burglary
Detectives...
//

"Copy you 229; rolling EMTS and patrol units...hang in, 229!"

Meanwhile...the speeding Dodge whips about in a screeching U-turn, speeding back toward where Tanner lay; the wounded man-
with a Herculean effort - he rolls over enough to free his service weapon and chamber a round..."Dispatch; suspects are RETURNING ;
to my 20: Fuck! FUCK!" His cracked rib and bruised collarbone screaming in protest, he lunges again, and the car barely misses him:
marshaling the last of his endurance Ryan squeezes off one...two...THREE shots in quick succession, with only one finding a home in
the fleeing auto...

"Tanner! TANNER! 229, respond! 229"-

Ryan gasps "Dispatch...229...I'm okay...I got off three shots: I hit the car - I don't know if I hit any of them...dispatch...I hear the Ambo..."

"That's great, 229. You hang in there."
//

Two blocks out from Main and Capestrano Av, "That has to be worrying...Tanner being shot," Sullivan commented to his passenger.
Side-eyeing her mate, Herrera-Sullivan replied, "I've known him for more than twenty-five years, Robert - he's my FRIEND; nothing
more."

"Whatever you say," he muttered. Andy grabbed his free hand and commented "Hey. I LOVE YOU, Detective First Grade Robert Sullivan.
I swore to never give you reason to doubt my love or mistrust me ever again. I haven't and I won't." A re-assuring squeeze of her hand
acknowledged her words. Their PD-issued Dodge Charger rolls to a stop beyond the police cordon and they walk up to the officers manning
the police tape, flashing their gold shields. "Detectives" a young female Sergeant of Middle Eastern descent greets them. "The Chief Of D's set
up his command post in that liquor store to our right: Grimlee's."

"Thanks, Sarge." The couple picks their way through the assembled first responders and their vehicles, making their way toward Grimlee's.
Inside they find Ripley, Hackett, Holder, Linden, and Ruiz nodding a greeting to each. The COD says "Linden and Holder - Interview Tanner
at Grey Sloan. Ruiz: how did our perps get from 'Chi' to Seattle? Herrera and Sully...you two are in Chicago; get into Doyle and Mendez. I'm
meeting with the Chief and the Mayor in...30 minutes. Questions?"

Herrera blurts "Chief might I switch out with Linden or Holder?" Even as she speaks the words she cringes inside, forcing herself not to
glance at her husband for his reaction to her query. Ripley stared at her evenly before replying. "How will you manage that and be in Chicago
at the same time?"

"Copy you, Chief."

"Right; I'm sending Hughes, Montgomery, Little Dixon, and whomever I can scrounge up from CBunco and Street Crimes to assist you
lot. ALRIGHT: tick, tock." The Detectives have their orders and filter out to complete them...Robert had already pulled away. leaving Andy
to wave down Holden and Linden..."Can you guys drop me at the station house on your way to Med?"

The partners readily agree, and Andy hops in the rear...
