Chapter 1: Great Plateau Tower

Chapter Text

“Vivian…”

“Vivian..”

“Open your eyes..”

“Wake up…”

“You need to wake up…”

“Vivian…”

-

As her eyelids hesitantly fluttered open, her field of view was immediately flooded with a strange yellow light coming from…. Somewhere.

The blonde woke up in a freezing pool of shallow water, the back of her hair completely submerged due to an… extended period of sleep. As she sat up, the water seemed to recede back into the device it seems where it came from. She observed her surroundings; cold, and dark, with an eerie blue glow. She crawled out of her sleeping pod, water dripping from her hair and body. She had to take a second to adjust to the cold, hard floor as her barefoot feet finally stepped on the floor.

As she looked around, she saw something of notice; a glowing stand just a couple of steps away from her, the lights flickering in shades of blue. She walked towards the object, her soaked feet making unusual noises with every step she took. When she came close to the pedestal and observed the object, a… certainly unusual slate popped up.

“That is a Sheikah Slate.”

The strange voice popped up again, stopping her in her tracks.

“Take it. It will help guide you after your long slumber.”

The voice immediately put the blonde out of her trance. She reached her hand out and hesitantly grabbed onto the latches on the side of the Sheikah Slate. When the slate was in her hand, it seemed to turn on, with a light blue background and a glowing blue symbol appearing on the screen.

Blue seemed to be a common color.

The pedestal returned to its former state, as a large sliding sound startled the blonde. To her right, a formerly closed door slowly opened, leading the way to a room deeper into the cave.

She jogged her way to the newly found room, seemingly a replica of the room prior, save for a couple chests.

The blonde inspected the chest on the right, figuring out a way to open it. After around 5 minutes of trying, the lock on the chest finally opened, and inside the chest were some Well-Worn Trousers. She opened the chest on the left, and in it was an Old Shirt. They looked a bit short, but it’s always better than nothing. She put the clothes on, and to her surprise, they were actually quite comfortable. With some actual clothes on, she jogged to the end of the room, being met with yet another pedestal, this time, it actually glowing orange.

After trying every possible way to get it to activate, she was about to give up when the strange voice came back.

“Hold the Sheikah Slate up to the pedestal. That will show you the way.”

She did what was instructed, and the pedestal started glowing blue again.

Authenticating…

Sheikah Slate Confirmed.

The symbol on the door suddenly turned blue, and the door slid open, suddenly revealing a burst of light from what seems to be the outside.

She walked towards the entrance, covering her eyes from the sheer amount of light suddenly bursting out.

“Vivian… You are our light–our light–that must shine upon Hyrule again. Now go…”

The light disappeared, leaving the blonde to see a flight of stairs, leading to what she assumes to be the outside.

She walked up the stairs, to be greeted by a small puddle of water and a giant rock. She walked through the water, getting her shoes a little wet, but nothing she couldn't manage. She looked at the rock, inspecting for ways to get up. Alas, it seems her only hope was to climb it. She locked her feet and hands on the rock and jumped forward, landing on top of the rock.

She was greeted with yet another flight of stairs, with quite a bit of greenery plaguing the steps. She walked up them and walked out of the cave she was trapped in just a bit ago. In her line of sight, there was a patch of land just above a forest.

She jogged over to the patch of land, observing what she assumed was Hyrule Kingdom from the strange view.

It was massive. Forests and trees plaguing the land, a dormant volcano spewing out smoke, a giant castle, and mountains everywhere. She observed her surroundings, a worn down church just in the distance.

She saw a silhouette of a man in the distance, sitting near a roasting fire. She decided to go over to him, seeing as the only other way was down. On her way, she found a couple tree branches, and put them in her pocket. When she arrived, she noticed a baked apple sitting on the grass. She was quite hungry, so she bent over to grab it. The apple was just near her mouth when the old man finally spoke up.

“I BEG YOUR PARDON! I do believe that is my baked apple! You can’t just go around taking whatever you please!”

The blonde turned around to face the old man, dropping the apple from her mouth with a nervous expression on her face.

“Oho ho! Forgive me–I could not resist pulling your leg. Please help yourself. An apple and an open flame make for a succulent treat.”

The blonde dropped the strange expression and stashed the apple in her pocket, saving it for later.

“It is a bit strange to see another soul in these parts,” the old man stated, his head turning towards the empty landscape.

The blonde asked who the man was… seeing the lack of people nearby.

“Me? I’ll spare you my life story. I’m just an old fool who has lived here, alone, for quite some time now. Enough of that. What about you, young one? What are you doing here?”

The blonde looked around, she asked the old man where she was.

“Answering a question with a question. That is fair enough. As I cannot imagine our meeting to be a simple coincidence...I shall tell you. This is the Great Plateau. According to legend, this is the birthplace of the entire kingdom of Hyrule.”

The old man stood up and pointed to the church in the distance with the lamp in his hand. “That temple there... Long ago, that was the site of many sacred ceremonies. Since the decline of the kingdom, it now sits abandoned, in a state of decay. Yet another forgotten entity. A mere ghost of its former self…”

The strange voice was back, repeating in her head like a broken record yet again.

“Vivian…

Vivian.

Head for the point marked on the map in your Sheikah Slate.”

The blonde sighed and pulled out the Sheikah Slate from her belt, her fingers tightening as she gripped the handle with an unknown strength, attempting to figure out the direction in which she needed to head to.

The map was damaged from its original state–from who knows who long ago–the map showing a simple pattern that left her with no idea where she was.

But she still knew the direction to go, to the east.

The blonde’s boots crunched against the dry grass, the wind had started to pick up since she left, knocking an apple from a nearby tree onto the grass. She picked up the apple and stashed it in her pocket, saving it for later.

As she walked near the church the old man talked about earlier, there was a strange lake nearby, with a suspicious ring of leaves right in the middle of it…

She stood on the tip of the grass, the lake looming right below her. She swallowed a breath she didn’t know she was holding, and dove right into the water.

Water flooded her vision as she dove in. She could hear a muffled voice from the surface…

“Ya-ha-ha! You found me! Huh? You’re not Hestu! But you can… see me? I didn’t know your kind could see the children of the forest! Well, if you run into Hestu, please return this to him…”

Her head bobbed up to the surface, and she saw the mysterious creature, a gray cat-like body with a large leaf stretched across its face… Strange. The creature gave her a golden seed that she was supposed to give to Hestu, whoever he was.

“Buh-bye!” The creature said.

The blonde took the hint and swam towards the floating island in the middle, climbing it as she exited the water. When she reached the top, the Sheikah Slate recognized it as a Rusty Broadsword, waiting for her on a rock. She pulled the sword out and put it in her pocket, leaving the strange island and finally heading for the mark on her Sheikah Slate, for real this time.

As she walked to the mark, she saw some red in the corner of her eye. As she sneaked closer, she saw what she only seemed to be a monster, red all over its body, with a wooden club in its hand. She decided it wasn’t worth it to try and fight it, seeing how limited her weapon selection is at the moment, and tried to sneak around it, but the monster noticed her and sounded its horn, alerting them of her location.

The blonde stood up and withdrew her sword from her pocket, guess she had to fight today. The Rusty Broadsword started crumbling as she attacked the creatures, breaking as soon as the enemy was killed. She picked up the weapons they dropped, and the Sheikah Slate recognized it as a Boko Club, and a Boko Bow.

She could see where she was supposed to go right infront her, the tip of it poking out the rocks in was slumbering in. She walked into it and investigated the place, finding a pedestal in front of her.

Place the Sheikah Slate in the pedestal.

She hesitantly did as she was told, and her Sheikah Slate glowed orange as the pedestal accepted it with ease.

Sheikah Tower activated.

Please watch for falling rocks.

The tower started shaking heavily, almost as if it was an earthquake. She tried to hold her body down, but she lost her balance and fell over, her eyesight fading to black.

She awoke quickly again, and noticeably more elevated then she remembered being. She slowly rose to her feet and looked around. She could see everything from up this high.

The pedestal in the center was glowing orange, with her Sheikah Slate still inside it.

Distilling local information…

Suddenly, the rock formation above the pedestal started glowing blue, an ancient language spilling down the material, almost as if it was raining. After almost an eternity waiting, the formation finally dropped a blue sustenance onto the Sheikah Slate, the Sheikah Slate getting flushed with the same shade of blue.

The Sheikah Slate immediately opened to the map screen, or lack thereof, seeing as the entire map screen was blank.

The area she was in currently got highlighted in blue on the map, then suddenly burst into colors, showcasing the sights around her.

Regional map extracted.

The Sheikah Slate extracted from the pedestal, leaving her alone on this tower, far into the sky. She grabbed the Sheikah Slate and put it back into her pocket, and looked around, admiring the sights. Not for long, though, as the voice popped into her head again, like a recurring dream.

“Remember…

Try… Try to remember… “

The blonde turned around, the voice seemed to be coming from the castle, an eerie golden glow gleaming from the center.

“You have been asleep for the past 100 years. “

She ran to the edge of the tower, trying to get a better view of what was calling to her. Suddenly, the terrain started quaking, a dark gloom spreading across the castle.

“The beast…”

A smoky dark red aura followed with the gloom, drowning the castle in its fury.

“When the beast regains its true power, this world will face its end.”

The dark monster cried out from the tip of the tower, its eyes glowing the same golden color.

The golden glow from the castle significantly strengthened.

“Now then… You must hurry, Vivian. Before it's too late…”
