Witching Hour

Work Text:

It was quiet on the Slipstream– Whatever it was at this point. Quiet and dark, lights turned off where no one was using them. Almost like the witching hour had stopped time. Barely anything moved, and if they didn’t know that Skipper was awake and piloting the ship, they’d assume that they were the only ones who were.

The only ones trapped in the spell cast.

Intrinsically Serena knew they weren’t, Bruno had rebuffed that idea before after all. But that didn’t matter. It was the feeling that counted after all.

Her brother could be so serious sometimes, he needed the whimsy.

Water splashed on their face, warm and washing the soap off their face– Well it… Was her face, right now. Bruno was around, sure. But he was leaving her to it. To this little ritual of her’s.

It was a small thing, really, but it was something she could say was purely her influence. Face scrub into cleanser into toner into moisturiser.

A little ritual of self care.

Yakob had never really done it, and Bruno didn’t care for it. But it was her’s. It made her feel more like herself when she wasn’t. Something that was her’s and only her’s. A cap snaps open and Serena dabs the toner onto her skin, careful to avoid their eyes with her cloth, the light in the bathroom the only light in the dim ship.

You’re thinking an awful lot there , Bruno says sleepily as she dabs, leaning close to the mirror to make sure she hasn’t missed a spot.

“Someone has to– You’re half asleep.” She replies, softly, closing their bottle of toner and moving onto the next item in her list. “You can sleep if you want, it’s late. I’ll be done soon.”

A hum echoed in her head, violet aether flickering around her fingers as she smoothed the moisturiser across her skin. Her fingers ached, twinged sharply as she bent them, but she ignored it in favour of her task. It was an old pain, and it never stopped them before.

A quiet yawn escapes her lips, closing the containers and pushing herself away from the counter. Purple aether took their body from her for a moment, still following the vague thoughts of leaving the bathroom, as Bruno reached up to brush some hair behind their ears and as he relinquished control of their body back to her for the remainder of their walk. A small snort escapes her as Bruno defends his actions, It was annoying me, and as they step into their room.

“You’re so silly Bruno.” She giggles, gently closing the door behind her. Another yawn escapes her as she does and she hums, shaking her head as if that would shake the hairtie from their hair. It of course didn’t, but a girl could dream. Bruno huffs at her as she reaches up and pulls the tie out, drops it with their hairbrush.

It’s butt fuck o’clock, sue me, Bruno grumbles, and not like you can talk . Serena supposed she couldn’t, but she also didn’t feel like dignifying that with a response as she reached for the brush to work that through her hair. Bruno was always like that, but that’s fine. She loves him anyway.

Despite his many faults.

There’s a quiet hum in her head as she works, running the brush through her hair.

“Well. We can sleep soon.” She whispers, shaking her hair out as she places the brush down. There’s a small pause as she moves, extracting herself from (Bruno’s) clothes. Dark, easy to move in. The Sed and being a mercenary had stuck around there, she supposed.

There was something comforting about the actions, though, of folding up clothes that could be reworn this week, and putting ones that couldn’t into the hamper. The monotony was nice. She reached for her sleep shirt, tugging it on and buttoning it with a small wince– Concern echoed from Bruno for a moment–

“I’m fine.” She whispers, reaching for the bottoms, “Just bent a finger too far, too quickly.”

Bruno hums again, lets his presence wrap around her like a hug, as she tugs her hair out from under the collar of the shirt.

Bed, then? He asks, quietly as Serena finishes up. She nods, depositting herself onto the bed quietly.

“Yep. Been a long day, huh?” Another hum. Serena laughs and lays her head down on the pillow. “... See you in the morning Bruno.” She whispers as she closes her eyes.

Sleep well, Serena , Bruno whispers back.

It was quiet on the Slipstream. Quiet and lights turned off where no one was using them. Almost like the Witching Hour had stopped time in it’s spell.

Skipper glanced down at his consol as a notification came up that the last light was turned off. A sad smile over took his lips before he glanced back out the window.

“Sleep well kids, gotta long trip ahead.”
