Work Text:
The end of Chuuya’s night is nearing, and he couldn’t be happier to be done.
It had been a long mission, one that was tedious and took way too much effort just for some information. But according to the boss, these people were too strong for anyone other than Soukoku to take on. It may have been a stretch just to get them to comply, but they didn't question it.
Oh that’s right, Dazai was there, too. The night had been doomed from the start.
It was completed at midnight, and after hours of mostly sitting and waiting to attack he was more than ready to head back and fill out the report. It never takes too long after all, at least not most of it.
The hard part about reports is his good-for-nothing partner who would rather do anything other than do paperwork. Even when Chuuya finishes his portion, he suspects the other half of it is sitting blank on Dazai’s desk.
He could just go home. He could leave the problem to his future self, get some well deserved rest, let a certain bandage covered mackerel deal with his own procrastination. It would be nice, that’s for sure, but he knows in the back of his mind that he can’t just leave.
He yawns, leaning back in his chair and trying to find the motivation to walk down the hall to Dazai’s office.
The sooner he does it, the sooner he can finally go to sleep.
The sooner he does it, the sooner he can leave work, and by extension, Dazai.
May as well get it over with.
He stands with his report in hand, walking out of his office and to his partner’s. It’s not a long walk by any means, but it feels a lot longer when you’re exhausted.
Once he reaches it he knocks, expecting an annoying quip back but receiving nothing.
“Dazai?” He calls out, knocking again. When he listens closely he can hear something, so he knows Dazai is in there. Yet he still receives no reply. “You can’t just ignore me and expect me to go away, I’m coming in.”
He feels a little worried, but he can’t just stand waiting for a response that’s not coming. Hesitating won’t do him any good now. Twisting the doorknob, he opens the door only to see…
Dazai, not sitting at his desk doing his report like he should be, but rolling on the floor next to his desk. So close, but so far.
“Oh come on, Dazai, not this shit again!” Chuuya can’t help the groan that escapes him as Dazai once again ignores him and continues whatever he’s doing. How does a habit like this even begin? Some questions Chuuya has long since stopped trying to get answers to.
He decides to just let it run its course, if Dazai is acting like this it means he’s thinking about the mission. That, and he doesn’t feel like nagging him right now. He doesn’t know if the rolling itself is what’s annoying him, it could very well be the fact that it means they’re not done working.
A couple of minutes have gone by when the rolling stops, and Dazai’s glaring up at him from his spot on the carpet. “Chuuya’s such a noisy dog, I was having trouble focusing!”
“Don’t even start with that crap.” Chuuya warns, but Dazai just grins back. With a roll of his eyes, he continues. “What was that about anyways? I thought we were finished.”
Dazai nods, “I thought so, too, but there’s something that slipped by us. We got to their base, went through their people and got the files. It wasn’t as hard as it should have been, if the port mafia had been in their shoes we would have stopped at nothing to keep that information.”
“So what are you saying, we didn’t do it right?”
“No, we got what we needed. I just think they must have it stored somewhere we didn’t look, which seems impossible at first because we checked everywhere in that building. I would figure out where they’re hiding it, but I don’t think I need to. There’s a much easier solution!” Suddenly he stands from where he was still laying down, heading towards the door.
Chuuya watches in confusion for a moment before scrambling to follow, both of their reports forgotten in the office. “Hold on, where are we going?”
Dazai doesn’t look back at him, but Chuuya can hear the smirk in his voice. “You’ll see~!”
Maybe going home was the best option. At least then he wouldn’t be blindly following his partner through the building, then through the city.
It's too late now. No point in dwelling on what could have been.
-
It’s not long that he’s being led through the streets and alleyways of Yokohama, and around halfway there he figures out where they’re headed anyways. They end up back at the same building from earlier, the same one that Chuuya thought they were done with.
“Do we seriously have to go looking through this place again? Couldn’t this wait for tomorrow?” He turns to Dazai, who looks suspiciously happy considering the situation.
“Of course not, that would take forever!” Dazai scoffs as if Chuuya was insane for thinking such a thing, “Don’t worry, it won’t take long. It’s easier now when there’s no one around.”
Now he’s really suspicious. “Would you just tell me the plan already? I want to be done with this.”
“So rude! But fine, since I can tell you’re dying to know,” Dazai pauses, and just before Chuuya can yell at him to get on with it he finally tells him. “I want you to demolish it!”
Chuuya raises an eyebrow, “That’s it?”
“Yep! Just level the place!”
On one hand, the boss won’t be happy they made such a scene and they’ll probably have a lecture waiting for them tomorrow. On the other hand, he’s ready to call it quits.
He makes his final decision, walking towards the building with a grin on his face.
“Gladly.”
-
They don’t return to the base after they’re done. Chuuya realizes that forcing Dazai to do his report isn’t going to benefit either of them right now, he can just do it later.
“Finally finished! Great work, Chibi!” Dazai snatches the hat off his head, ruffling his hair.
Chuuya slaps his hand away, jumping up to reach the hat that Dazai is holding as high as he can above his head. "Give me that, you slimy bastard!"
Dazai snickers, lowering the hat to where Chuuya can grab it. "Who are you calling slimy, Slug?"
Chuuya scoffs, "As if you're one to talk, Mackerel."
Dazai whines some sort of response but Chuuya ignores him, focusing on getting home. Looking at his watch, he cringes when he sees it's already reaching 2:00 AM. His apartment is nearby, so it shouldn't take him long to get there. He glances over at Dazai, and even if it's not too visible, he knows he's tired, too.
He might regret this. There is a large chance that he will regret this.
"Hey." He calls out, and Dazai glances over at him curiously. He looks away, his cheeks turning red ever-so-slightly. "I don't know how far your place is, but you know mine isn't too far. You can just stay with me tonight, if you want."
For a moment there's no response, and Chuuya wonders if the silence is Dazai's way of saying no, but then, "Wow, if Chuuya loved me so much all he needed to do was tell me."
The red on his cheeks is a little more noticeable now.
"Oh, fuck you! I was trying to be nice but forget I asked, asshole!" He curses as Dazai laughs.
"Just kidding~!" Dazai draws out the words. After a moment of silence though, he speaks up again. "But thank you, I appreciate it. I might just have to take you up on that offer."
When Chuuya looks up at him this time, he sees a smile much more genuine than the grins he usually sees. He turns back to face the sidewalk ahead, but he finds himself smiling, too.
Being partners with Dazai is interesting. It leads him into situations he never once thought he'd be in, and it's most likely true that he'd be stress-free without him. But moments like this make it worth the stress he does receive, when they can just be without worry. He supposes he'll keep the idiot around for now.
