Work Text:

~ What a Way to Break It to Them ~

When his aunt said that he shouldn't be raised in the pet shop like an animal, Chris's temper broke. Even if he was only a little kid, he couldn't let this go on without defending the count.

"What's wrong with Count D taking care of me?" Chris yelled. "He's Leon's boyfriend!"

For a few long moments, his family simply stared at him in shock. Whether it was shock that Chris was actually speaking again, or because of the bombshell he'd just dropped on them, he had no way of knowing.

Once she finally managed to recover her powers of speech, Chris's aunt put a hand to her cheek and faintly murmured, "Oh, my."

Her husband turned to the count and inquired, "How long have you and Leon been dating?"

"Well..." Count D said slowly, his brow furrowing as he carefully considered his answer. "... if we're counting that as our first date, then Christmas Eve will be the second anniversary of our relationship."

"That would make it the longest relationship that Leon has had with anyone, ever," the aunt said to the uncle, quietly enough that Chris didn't hear her say it. (Count D and the animals all heard, though.)

Chris didn't quite understand why his family changed their minds so quickly about letting him stay with his brother instead of trying to take him home with them, but he didn't think too hard about it since this was the result he wanted, and he was still a little kid who was easily distracted from such thoughts.

Count D was certain that Leon would be happy to hear that his little brother was finally speaking again. He had no idea how his dear detective would take the news that the first words Chris had spoken aloud in over a year were to call Count D Leon's boyfriend... but he was looking forward to finding out.
