Chapter 1: Author's Note

Chapter Text

Hello, all you wonderful people out there. Welcome to this corner of my mind. I thought about putting this in notes, but really, this Author’s Note is long enough to have earned the right to be its own chapter. So, here it is. Read it, don’t, whatever - the story starts on Chapter 2. :)

I started writing this tale during the height of the COVID debacle. My job closed down for two months, and I found Fallout 4 GOTY on Steam for an obscenely low price and thought, hey, I've never played any of the games in this series but I have friends who enjoy it. Why not give it a shot?

It hooked me in from the very intro and has still not let me go.  At the time of this writing, between console and PC, I have over 10,000 hours invested in playing this game.

Yes. You read that right.

Ten. Thousand. Hours.

I love this game. I love the lore and the characters, the quests and the fun and the Easter eggs and just - everything about it. And I started writing this story shortly after I finished my first playthrough.

So, my utter and complete hyperfixation aside, here's what you need to know about this story.

First: the technical. It is three books long. (Update to note: after doing revisions on book three I realized I was mistaken and it is actually FOUR books long. Stories gonna story, man.) It is finished, for all intents and purposes. (Just have to clean up the last 150 pages or so of the third book.) My original plan was to post one chapter a week, but I realized at that rate it would take six months to get just the first book posted, and that is the smallest one. I am not that patient. So there will be frequent updates, but no set schedule. Some weeks I may not post anything, depending on the amount of spoons I have. Some days I might post multiple chapters. Sometimes I might break up one enormous chapter into chappie chunks and post all of them back to back. Who knows? Regardless, it will be posted as I can do so.

Secondly: This is jam-packed with spoilers. And not only from Fallout 4, oh no. You meet characters from Fallout 3, from Fallout 76 - you hear tales of characters that are mentioned in lore alone. If spoilers are a thing you hate, do not read this story. I offer no refunds for anyone who cries saying 'but I didn't get to that part yet.' Not my problem. Curate your own experience. I'm not your mother. Flames will be used to toast marshmallows. This takes place after the main storyline is done; in the playthrough I based this off of, I sided with the Minutemen against the Institute, and then blew up the Brotherhood for good measure. In fact, book one takes place entirely at the Boston Airport on the wreckage of the Prydwen.

Third: This story features the female Sole Survivor in a romantic relationship with Arthur Maxson. There are other relationships mentioned as well, some of them het, some not - one triad, in fact. There are mentions of pregnancy and childbirth. There are small allusions to various other traumas. There is going to be a fuckton of angst and romance and fluff and anger and prejudice and all sorts of shit. However, there are two things that will NOT be found anywhere in this story:

  1. There is no smut. Occasional flirty comments (I mean, c'mon, Hancock exists, yo), but nothing that would even take this above a teen level.
  2. The Sole Survivor's actual name is never spoken. Not once. This entire epic three-book series is told from the viewpoint of our favorite reporter, Piper Wright (with the exception of certain flashback scenes that she is being told about by the Sole Survivor). Everything is through her eyes. Hence the title. Which means if she doesn't see it happen or hear it happen, she doesn't know anything about it.

Finally: I have stayed as true to canon as possible, but it's fanfic. By definition it's gonna be AU because if it were canon it would have been in the game and not glorping itself out of my brain and into text. But it takes place in the canon universe and I have tried to capture the voices and the ambience as much as possible. I have my own set of headcanons and every single one of them that applies will come into play. So if my voices for the characters don't sound like what you think they should - sorry not sorry. My world, my rules. Tags will be updated as the chapters demand if I remember to do so. I hate tagging with a passion, however, so if I miss something feel free to drop me a note and kindly ask me to rectify that.

So here it is. This is my baby, and one of two epic-length Fallout 4 fics I have written (the other is not finished and as such will not be posted any time soon). Spotty updates, extreme chapter length variations, and no customer service - but I sincerely hope it makes you smile anyway.

So come on. Stop by the snackbar for some crispy cricket crunchies and a mutfruit smoothie, and join me as Piper lets us see the world Through Her Eyes.
