Work Text:

Anakin woke in a cold sweat. He looked around to reassure himself, he was still in his room in the Jedi temple. Shaking his head he got up, knowing he wouldn’t be able to sleep while thoughts of his nightmare plagued his mind. He sat at his table, wondering when he would be free from the nightly terrors that had stalked him since leaving Tatooine.

Hearing footsteps he ran back to his bed, feigning sleep. Ahsoka burst through his door, looking panicked as she scanned the room for potential threats.

“What’s going on Skyguy? I heard you scream.”

Anakin groaned internally. Usually people just ignored his nightly screams but this was the first time he had had this particular dream around Ahsoka.

“Nothing, it must have been someone else.” Anakin said. Yeah, this would totally trick Ahsoka, she would just run off and try to find whoever—

“Yeah right” Ahsoka's voice cut into his train of thought. “And you’re crying for no reason.”

“Exactly” Anakin said weakly, knowing there was no way out of this.

“What. Happened.”

“Absolutely nothing. I don’t know what your talking about”

“Master if you don’t tell me now I am going to kill you and frame Obi-wan as your murderer”

“That actually not a bad idea, he would get so mad about it”

“Master” Ahosoka whined, and Anakin gave in.

“Ok, fine. It’s this nightmare, I’ve been getting it scince I was a kid, it’s no big deal”

Ahsoka faltered, surprised he gave in so easily. Usually he was way more stubborn about stuff like this.

“Oh”

They sat in uncomfortable silence for a few moments.

“What was it about?”

Anakin felt, deep down, a part of his soul die. He had worked hard to gain the respect of his far too snippy padawn and this was it. It was all for nothing, she was about to lose any and all semblance of care about a thing he said. He took a deep breath, steadying himself.

“It’s about sand”

Ahsoka stared at him, waiting for the telltale signs her master was joking. After a few seconds, the truth of what he’d said hit her.

“BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA”

Anakin waited petulantly for her to finish laughing.

A few minutes later Ahsoka sat up from where she had fallen, wiping a tear from her eye.

“Skyguy you have to know that is the stupidest thing I’ve heard in my entire life”

Anakin felt his cheeks flush with a mixture of anger and embarrassment.

“Well—“

Before he could say anymore, Obi-wan burst into his room.

“What's all this ruckus about?”

He paused, taking in the scene before him, before raising a questioning eyebrow at Anakin.

“The one where sand is in your hair so we have to shave it off again?”

Anakin looked down at the ground and nodded while next to him Ahsoka burst into hoots of laughter.

“You know,” Obi-wan said looking down at ahsoka, “back when his hair was shorter he’d dream that we had to amputate his leg because sand got stuck on his foot”

Ahsoka gasped, delighted with her newfound knowledge. Anakin simply sat miserably, thinking about how much he wanted to see Padmé, she wouldn’t be this mean to him—

“This noise, what is the cause of?” Master Yoda asked as he entered the room. And, seriously? This was the third time Anakin's train of thought or sentence had been cut off, and as if his day (night?) wasn’t bad enough already, now the little gremlin that was apparently “an important and valued member of the Jedi council” was here to laugh at him.

“Another bad dream you have had Skywalker?” The monster asked Anakin, pretending he wasn’t about to embarrass him further. Anakin pointedly did not answer.

“Remember I do, have this dream every night you used to” Yoda said with mischief glinting in his eyes. Ahsoka howled with laughter while Anakin left the room as fast as he could.

—and walked straight into Mace Windu.

“The dream again, Skywalker?” Windu raised his eyebrow critically as Anakin willed himself to die on the spot. Kriff, he wanted to see Padmé.
