Chapter Text
The winter month seems to fly by this year, when he’s not training, or attending classes, he’s patrolling. Deku didn’t mind the patrols so much, since it let him go on little dates with Ochako, Tao City has been relatively peaceful since the last incident, and after the first few weeks, the public got used to seeing the hero couple walking around. It made the civilians feel safe, and the villains less daring. For now.
The Morning of Christmas Eve. . .
Deku’s phone buzzes, waking him up early in the morning. It’s a message from his mother, Hey sweetie, I was just wondering if you’d be coming home for Christmas… I’ve invited the Urarakas over for dinner… 😊”
Deku rubs his eyes as he tries to come up with a response, “Okay, I’ll see if I can.” Why does she always make her text messages sound so scary… Deku gets dressed and -Wait how did she get their number?
There’s a sudden rhythmic knock at Deku’s door that makes him jump out of his skin at first, but he quickly realizes it must be Miruko. He opens the door and leans back, his mentor is already dressed head to toe in her traditional Santa outfit, “Merry Christmas Usagito!”
She must have some crazy training in mind- “It’s not Christmas yet-”
“Ay- I know, tomorrow- who cares, it’s been Christmas around here for like three weeks. Come on!” She drags him out into the lobby where everyone looks so cozy having breakfast together. That light blue tint of the morning still flooding in through the windows. The MirRyu agency is much nicer kept than Miruko’s apartment was. Most mornings take-out gets brought in for everyone, or they fend for themselves. This morning however, Ryukyu has gone through the extra effort to whip up a nice traditional Japanese breakfast for everyone. Her non-student sidekicks have already been dismissed to go home yesterday, so it’s just enough for them. Miruko, Ryukyu, Deku, Ochako, Nejire, and Tsuyu all gather round the table, and have a nice breakfast.
Everyone gets so lost in how tasty and refreshing the food is, they all forget to talk for a bit.
Eventually, Ochako thinks to break the silence, “Sooo, what are everyone’s plans for tomorrow?” She really wants to know Deku’s plans the most, but she’s extra sure to include everyone in the question to not seem too obvious.
Deku remembers his mom’s text, “Oh, Miruko, my mom wants to know if I can come home for Christmas.”
Miruko snorts, “No.”
Deku looks so hurt.
“-I’m joking, of course you can go see your mom- God kid, do you really think I’m that type of monster? Just for that, I’m inviting myself. You only get to go, if I go too.”
Ryukyu intervenes, “Rumi, you can’t do that.”
“Why not? His mom’s a huge fan, I bet she’d love to have me over.”
“Because you and I have to stay here. Someone has to run the agency, remember?”
Miruko whines, “Ryukooo. It’s Christmas, what kind of monster starts trouble on Christmas?”
“The worst kinds, would you like me to list the incidents that happened on Christmas Eve the past three years just in this city?”
Miruko fully lays on the ground to throw a tiny tantrum, “Nooo. Just let the police handle it for one, night, por favorrr”
“No.”
Miruko crawls into Ryukyu’s lap, causing that tiny blush on the dragon’s face, “Pleeeease.”
Ryukyu is quick to push her off, “You’re an adult Rumi, would you be serious?”
“I am serious! I want to go to a Christmas party because we always work on Christmas, and it’s always terrible! What if we just leave our phones on, and if anything comes up that we are absolutely needed, you can fly us back?”
Ryukyu’s brow twitches, “When did you decide I was going?”
“Just now.”
“Ru-”
“If I go by myself it will take me much longer to get back to the city, but if you come with me, then we can get back here before anything goes horribly wrong. Besides it’s not like we’re the only agency in Tao City.”
Ryuko sighs, “Fine.”
“Mi amor!” She squeezes Ryukyu close.
Nejire waves at Deku to get his attention, “I’m sorry I can’t go too, Mirio, Tamaki and I always have Christmas together with our families. We call it the Big Tree-union! Get it?”
Deku laughs, but he felt he should’ve clarified “That’s okay I-”
Tsuyu chimes in, “Actually Midoriya I can’t either, thank you for the offer though…”
Ochako sits quietly and watches as Deku types something up on his phone, wondering if Deku’s going to ask her what her plans are, or if she wants to come over to this party.
“Hey mom, so, might be bringing over a few more friends, prepare a dragon sized feas”- He feels eyes on him, but when he looks up, Ochako looks away. He’s about to go back to his text- “Oh!- Ochako! I almost forgot to tell you.”
“Yes Deku?”
“Uh.” He gets flustered as he feels all eyes at the table are on him. He’s never been more aware of the fact that he is the only guy here. “I uhm. My mom invited your parents over for tonight, so, you should come too.”
She plays koy, “I’d love to, but, I have other plans.”
“H-huh?”
Ochako can’t keep that act up for long, her pink cheeks would’ve given her away if her snort didn’t. “I’m just messing with you. That sounds like fun!-” Oh god! Are we like, am I going to… stay over…At Deku’s house!? Steam puffs out from the top of her head as she overheats. Despite having literally been staying in the room right next to Deku’s for the past month.
“Are you okay?” Deku looks genuinely concerned, but as Ochako makes up some excuse for her blushing, Miruko just watches them with a big goofy smile.
After breakfast, Ryukyu gathers everyone around the tree. “Since you’re all going to be with your families tomorrow. Now is as good a time as any to pass out presents.”
Ochako’s eyes widen, I didn’t know we were buying stuff for each other! She peers over at Deku wondering what he did, and she can’t read his expression well enough to tell. If he got me something, and I didn’t get him something, am I a horrible girlfriend?
Miruko claps Ochako on the shoulder, seeming to have read her mind, “Ryuko and I bought all the presents.”
“Rumi! They’re from Santa Claus!”
Miruko gives her such a look of disappointment, “Ryuko, they’re teenagers, not kids-”
Ryukyu pouts. “It ruins the fun of the season if you just tell them.”
“They already-” She sees Nejire looks, deeply affected by this news. Miruko decides to play along. “They already know that Santa Claus only comes to their family houses, not agencies they…work… at.” She thinks that makes enough sense.
Nejire rubs her eyes and sniffs, but doesn’t say anything at all.
Tsuyu watching that thinks, So cute.
“Alright, everyone close your eyes and hold out your hands!” By Miruko’s command, the sidekicks all do exactly that. Each of them receives relatively similar sized boxes. As they open them up, their gifters explain.
“Nejire, I got you goggles so you could fly through dust storms without losing vision.” Nejire immediately runs to hug Ryukyu.
“Thank you!!! This is so nice! Where did you get them? Are they special made just for me or?”
Ryukyu pets her eldest pupil, “Just for you.” She continues her list, “And Tsu, I got you a waterproof case for your phone.” Tsu pulls out a rectangular plastic frog, “Also I ensured it would be cute enough to fit your brand.”
Tsuyu waddles up to join the hug Nejire is still giving her.
As Ochako opens her present, she finds it’s a whole outfit. She looks to Ryukyu at first, but Miruko waves, “We thought we’d split up the gift buying evenly, so I took care of you. Usagito told me about how when you first got your costume, you were disappointed because the bastards made it skin tight, when you asked for something more loose fitting.”
Ochako holds her blushing cheeks, “Deku, you remembered all that?”
“Well yeah-” He gets flustered, “Is that weird?- I didn’t think it was that long ago, but I guess a lot has happened since then.”
Ochako waves him off with a big dumb smile, “Ju-just open yours already!”
When Deku opens up his present, he’s a tad confused. Inside the box is what looks like a white bracelet. Then he recognizes the shape, “Is this…” Melissa’s Full Gauntlet?
“I got tired of looking at your big ridiculous arm braces. So I got you a whole new pair of gloves. Think you’ll like em since they’re by the-”
“Daughter of David Shield?”
“That’s freaky, how’d you know that- Don’t tell me you got a mind reading quirk now too?”
Tsuyu and Nejire both look over confused to hear that.
Deku gets embarrassed and explains, “When my class went to I-Island we met her, and she gave me one of these, but I uh… broke it.”
“That would explain this note she sent with it.” Miruko holds up a tiny square note that just reads, These are tougher, but try to be more careful! Also they come off easier.
Miruko pushes the boxes onto Deku and Ochako. “Go try em on, I want to see you two together in your new costumes.” The two both blush, and she knows immediately what dumb thought went through their shared brain cell, “We have so many other rooms-”
They both run off to their separate bedrooms to put on their outfits, before they come back out.
Ochako’s outfit is largely the same, but the pants which are actually separated from the top now, are far less tight than the spandex she had before, and the two dots on her chest have been replaced by a sideways up crescent moon, meant to look like a U, and the exterior of the collar has been made black and fluffy, though the interior still applies the same pressure to her pressure points as it did before.
Aside from the white Full Gauntlets that dawn his arms. Deku’s outfit has also just barely changed, she replaced his red belt with a white one, and his red shoes with white shoes, the shoulder pads have been replaced with white fur lined pauldrons. As Deku is about to question this detail, Miruko seems to read his mind as well.
“Now you both match me!” She pulls on her own fur collar. “And it’ll keep you nice and warm for winter.”
Ryukyu growls, “Miruko... trying to steal my student, I see.”
She plays innocent with a laugh and head scratch, “What do you mean..?”
As Ryukyu gets a better look at Ochako she notices, “You even rebranded her!” She’s referring of course to the innocuous U, which bears a striking resemblance to Miruko’s crescent moon logo, despite being smaller, sideways, and a different color.
Miruko argues, “Well you could’ve got Usagito something!”
“You said, and I quote, ‘I’ve got Usagito and Uravity covered, don’t worry!’ If I knew you were going to get them full on costume redesigns, I would’ve gone farther for Nejire and Tsuyu at the very least!”
“So that’s what you’re actually mad about!”
Ryukyu goes full dragon, and chases the rabbit around the lobby, while Miruko gleefully evades her.
The sidekicks all take cover in different hallways, but of course, Deku and Ochako shelter in the same one. They get their first good look at each other side by side, and realize, they’re kind of matching. Not like obvious color matching, but, where she has black, he has white, and where she has pink he has green. Not to mention the fur. Deku wonders why he didn’t get a little crescent moon brand, but he supposes it wouldn’t make sense with his brand.
They speak in unison “You look nice!” And then they both blush in unison.
