Chapter 1: Chapter 1 Introduction
Chapter Text
A/N (Very important to this story)
This story is not going to have the GoT characters watching the show. They are going to react to the fanfiction "Father of Dragons" by Naerys Blackfyre (and yes they gave me permission to write this) because that fanfiction is in my opinion better than the show. Though that may be biased because Jon is my favorite character. I highly suggest reading "Father of Dragons" before reading this, seriously check it out, it's amazing. Also, this is my first Game of Thrones fanfiction so don't expect it to be good. Some of the characters will seem OOC.
The first thing Jon noticed when he woke up was that he wasn't in Winterfell anymore. He was in a room with a lot of comfy-looking chairs and a giant black rectangular box on one of the walls. He heard someone groan to his right. When he looked over he saw the rest of his family as well as some of the other lords of Westeros. Even the king was here. There were also some people from Essos like Jorah Mormont.
Jorah Mormont and Ned Stark in the same room. That certainly wouldn't end well, Jon mused to himself.
Before any arguments could start writing appeared on the giant box and a voice started talking. "Welcome everyone! I know you're all probably wondering why you're here. The reason you are here is because I brought you here to watch your future. You will be watching future events on the giant box on the wall, it's called a screen by the way."
Cersei snorted and rolled her eyes. "As if something like that would actually be possible."
"Then how would you explain how we all got here?" Oberyn asked snidely effectively shutting her up. It was no secret the Martells hated the Lannisters.
"Seven hells Ned it's so good to see you." Robert said wrapping his friend in a hug. Ned greeted him back while hiding his shock at how much weight his friend had gained.
While Ned and Robert had their reunion Arya noticed Jon and tried to go over to him, only to run into seemingly nothing drawing everyone's attention.
The "screen" spoke again. "Ah, yes I forgot to mention I have put an invisible wall between Jon and the rest of you."
"Why would you do that?" Ned asked, the confusion and suspicion clear in his eyes.
"Just to ensure his safety. You'll find out why soon enough. But I think you already know why don't you Ned?" Everyone could hear the amusement in his voice.
No one could figure out why a bastard son would need protection. Sure a trueborn son would need it but not a bastard. Catelyn was sure it was a way to keep the bastard away from her children and overall seemed happy about it.
Ned meanwhile had gone pale. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Howland Reed also go slightly pale. Could this person have figured out Jon's true parentage?
His train of thought was interrupted by Tywin asking him why his bastard would need anything to ensure his safety. "I truly don't know my lord." Ned lied through his teeth. He had to keep Jon safe.
Doran and Oberyn were getting suspicious now. They know Rhaegar and Lyanna married and Elia was alright with it even if they did not agree with it. And right as the rebellion ends Ned Stark comes back with a bastard which seemed highly unlikely. Could this Jon be the child of Rhaegar and Lyanna? They decided to keep this information for later since they had no proof yet.
Ser Davos, Varys, and Genna also had their suspicions. They all heard the rumors of how Lyanna Stark was never kidnapped but rather went with Rhaegar willingly. They would have to keep a close eye on Lord Stark and his "bastard".
After some more reunions and introductions, everyone took their seats. All the Stark children were disappointed that their brother couldn't sit with them. Jon was just confused, he really did not see any reason as to why he would need his safety ensured but it's not like he could do anything about it.
The "screen" spoke up one last time before the viewing began. "The events you are going to watch start four years into the future."

Chapter 2: Chapter 2 The Escape
Chapter Text
A/N
Just some clarification. I have taken the characters from after the Starks got their direwolves but before Robert arrives in Winterfell. And yes Jon Arryn is already dead.
Just like for the past months I have woken up in the dark. I am here chained and bound alongside my pale and golden brother and he is as angry as I am.
How could our mother do this to us? To lock us away in here in the dark and refuse us to fly and hunt in the air where we belong.
"Are those dragons?!" "But that's impossible!" "There are no more dragons!" "They were all killed ages ago!" "This has to be some sort of trickery!"
The lords in the room were all shouting at each other trying to figure out what to do with the knowledge that dragons might return to Westeros. The children were both fascinated and scared of the prospect of dragons returning. The stories they were told were enough to make them aware that while dragons were majestic beasts they could also be used to cause destruction and death to those who opposed their masters.
Robert was… scared, to be honest. Defeating Rhaegar and the Mad King was simple because they did not have dragons. If this future is to be true then that meant either Viserys or Daenerys Targaryen had hatched dragons and were coming to take back the Iron Throne.
He briefly overheard his wife and her father Tywin giving orders to the lords of the Westerlands to build as many scorpions as they could once they got out of here. Tywin would be damned if those Targaryens came back after he finally made his daughter the queen.
All the other lords were also making plans to build scorpions once they got out of here. The lords of the Crownlands and The Narrow Sea on the other hand were in agreement to support the Targaryen who could control these dragons once he arrived in Westeros.
Robert was wary of the lords of the Crownlands. He knew those cunts would support the damn dragonspawn if they ever came back, especially if they had dragons with them. And he didn't trust those Dornish snakes either. Was this what the mad king saw? Enemies and traitors at every corner? The only person Robert could truly trust was Ned. He knew his best friend would never sell him out to the Targaryens and would fight with him to the bitter end.
Jaime's hands were shaking. He very often had nightmares about the death of the royal family and how his father presented their mutilated bodies to Robert as if they were some sort of gift or trophy. Maybe this new Targaryen would be a chance to redeem himself for failing Rhaegar and his family. And hopefully, it wouldn't be a repeat of Aerys Targaryen because as deranged as he was at least he did not have dragons. Jaime shuddered at that thought. Thank the seven the mad king did not have a dragon.
Jon felt weird. He did not feel any fear of seeing dragons. In fact, it fascinated him, he read a lot of books in Winterfell's library about the Targaryens and their dragons, but it was nothing compared to actually seeing one with his own two eyes. It was almost as if he was being drawn to the dragons, especially the emerald green one. He couldn't explain it, it was the same feeling he had with ghost, but it felt… stronger, as if there was some deeper connection there.
Unlike my pale brother I am fortunate, for since I hatched, I have felt my rider even though he is far away from me, he is in a land filled with cold and snow. It is not usual for us to be able to connect with our riders from such a distance but mine is special. He is strong and powerful in magic and that is just as necessary for us to grow strong.
Ned and Howland glanced at each other. To their knowledge, only Targaryens could ride dragons and the only Targaryen in a land filled with cold and snow was Jon. Did this mean the dragon chose Jon as his rider?
If the dragon decides to find Jon it would be impossible to hide his true parentage. In all honesty, Howland was excited. He wanted Ned to eventually put Jon on the throne, but Ned has not done anything to accomplish that and Howland was losing faith that he ever would. Maybe now with Jon getting a dragon, he would finally start. Jon would certainly be a better king than Robert, not that it would be difficult to be better than him.
Olenna Tyrell was already plotting to make Margaery the queen. All they had to do was find out who this Targaryen was and start a betrothal contract right away. If this Targaryen really did have dragons it would be best to side with him and make her granddaughter the queen in the process.
Willas saw this and sighed. Of course, his grandmother would start trying to marry Margaery to this new Targaryen with dragons. She didn't even know this Targaryen was yet, no one did. His father, Mace Tyrell would obviously also try to marry her to the Targaryen since he also wanted his precious little flower to become the queen of the seven kingdoms.
Doran and Oberyn were getting more convinced that Rhaegar and Lyanna did indeed have a child and it might very well be the boy Ned Stark claimed as his bastard. After all, the North is a land filled with cold and snow and that's where the dragon knew its rider was waiting.
The time has come for us to break out of this infernal darkness and find my rider. My brother will follow me, this I know for our mother has betrayed us both and we will never follow her or our angry brother again.
"Who is this mother they keep talking about?" Benjen asked. He also noticed how the dragon said "angry brother" which implied there were not just two but rather three dragons. He could see that the other lords noticed that too as they were slightly paler than before. The fact this third dragon was apparently angry wasn't very reassuring either.
"It must be Daenerys Targaryen as she is the only female Targaryen left alive." Jorah Mormont said which earned him dirty looks, especially from Lord Stark. The lords still had no idea why this slaver had to be here with them. Then again they had no idea why the sellsword, Bronn was with them either. Lord Tyrion seems to have taken a liking to the sellsword though and could be seen sharing stories and jokes with Bronn.
He may be bigger than Viserion and I for now but the magic in the air where my rider is, is strong and in abundance. We will soon overtake him in size and strength.
Tyrion was watching and listening with rapt attention. He loved reading about dragons and now he had the chance to actually see one. Maybe in the future, he would get to meet a dragon up close? It would be dangerous that's for sure but it would definitely be worth the risk.
Viserion is looking at me. He knows it is now that we must act and leave this horrible place.
I open my mouth and breath fire on the chain that is holding my brother and it melts away. There is still the issue of the iron collar that is around his neck and there is still some part of the chain hanging from it but he is no longer bound to the wall. Then he returns the favor and I am free of the chain like him.
Barristan was already praying and hoping this Targaryen in the North would turn out to be more like Rhaegar than Aerys. If he turned out to be another mad king and actually had dragons with him then Westeros would be turned to ash. He would finish what Aerys started.
Tormund was thinking. If the Freefolk could somehow convince the crows and kneelers of the White Walkers existence they could use the dragons to help them fight of the dead. It was a long shot but it was worth a shot. It really was the only option they had left. Though given by the reactions of the kneelers in the room with him he was sure it would be almost impossible to convince them to fight together.
We face the wall to the northwest and we breath fire at the same time.
The wall crumbles down and I see sunlight for the first time in months or maybe even years and I roar in joy alongside Viserion. I take flight, it will be hard going at first but it will get easier soon. We have a long distance to cover and we have not flown in a long time, but we will find him and with him we shall grow strong.
Varys was confused and excited. Why would they go north if the only Targaryens left are in Essos? Were there any Targaryens he wasn't aware of in Westeros? He was interested in what type of person this northern Targaryen would be. Neither Viserys nor Daenerys were fit to be rulers of the seven kingdoms, but maybe this one would be.

The next chapter won't be the next part of the "Father of Dragons" story. I plan on showing the characters Hardhome first as it would make more sense to show them the real danger as soon as possible and hardhome is right before the events of "Father of Dragons" so it fits perfectly. After that, it's back to "Father of Dragons".
Chapter 3: Chapter 3 Hardhome
Chapter Text
A/N
Hey. I'm back. This took way longer to write than I thought it would. I'm going, to be honest, I am not 100% satisfied with how this chapter turned out and I will most likely revisit it in the future to rewrite some parts.
EXT. HARDHOME – SHORE The ships full of Crows and wildlings dock at Hardhome. Jon and Tormund get out together. The camera fixates on the swords on their hips. "You trust me Jon Snow?" Tormund asks him.
Benjen sighed. Looks like Jon ended up joining the Night's Watch. He had hoped Jon would reconsider and stay in Winterfell. He was sure that once Jon actually joined he found out the truth about what the watch had become. Well, at least this future would show Jon what it was really like in the watch and he would change his mind.
Howland shook his head in sadness. Joining the watch meant Jon had given up all the titles he never even knew he had. He would never be able to stake his claim on the Iron Throne since the Watch's oath could only be released by death. But that also brought up another question. What would happen once that dragon found Jon? Howland was sure the dragon wouldn't give a damn about some oath.
Ned was conflicted. On one hand, Jon had given up his birthright and couldn't make a claim on the Iron Throne which meant Ned wouldn't have to choose between his nephew and his best friend, even if the choice should have been obvious. But on the other hand, Robert was a terrible king and his children wouldn't be much better. Jon had what it took to make a great king with some practice. What bothered Ned the most was the fact that he probably never told Jon about his heritage before he joined the watch. He was sure Lyanna was rolling around in her grave at his decisions.
Tormund was confused. What the hell was he doing with a crow? Had the crows changed their opinions on the Free Folk? Maybe they found out about the White Walkers and decided to help the Free Folk. He hoped that was the case, maybe there was a chance for peace between them. There definitely would be once the crows and kneelers found out about the common enemy.
He looked over at the younger Jon Snow. Why would he need an invisible wall to separate him from everyone else, even his own family? Could it be because he would make peace with the Free Folk in the future? The kneelers in the room with them would definitely not agree with that decision. But surely they wouldn't go as far as to hurt or kill him for that, right?
The man in question was ecstatic. He finally joined the Night's Watch in the future. The Watch may not be ideal but it was really Jon's only option. It was the only place where he could actually do something significant. And he could finally get away from Lady Stark's hatred for him. Unfortunately, he would also have to leave the rest of his family behind. He was sure they wouldn't take his decision that well.
Jon was correct indeed. The Stark children were saddened by the fact their older brother would leave for the wall. Arya was heartbroken as the only person who truly understood her would no longer be there for her. Sansa's stomach was churning with dread. She treated Jon pretty badly because she had to be a proper lady like her mother, who treated Jon horribly because he was a bastard. Sansa had a thought that racked her with guilt. Was she part of the reason Jon wanted to leave? Robb was sad that his brother had to leave but he was also angry at his mother. Robb knew his mother despised Jon for some bloody reason and he was sure she was the main reason Jon would leave for the wall in the future. And his father wasn't much better, he never stopped her from abusing Jon.
Catelyn was very happy. The bloody bastard finally got removed from her home in Winterfell. She did not really care about where he went as long as she didn't have to deal with him anymore. It seems that in the future her husband finally saw reason and got rid of the bastard, who she was sure would try to rise above his station and try to usurp her children one day.
Well, looks like it did not matter if Jon was Lyanna's and Rhaegar's child anymore. The Martell brothers thought to themselves. Any claim he had on the Throne was now gone due to him joining the Night's Watch.
The one thing that every single person in the room was questioning was why Jon Snow and other Night's Watchmen were meeting up with wildlings. Should they not be killing each other? A lot of them scoffed at Tormund's question. Trust a wildling? No one could be that stupid.
"Does that make me a fool?" Jon asks in return.
Yes, most of the people watching thought to themselves. Only a fool would trust a wildling. The northern lords were especially angry at those wild savages. All they did was raid and kill their people.
"We are fools together now." Tormund replies.
They walk to meet the men and women of Hardhome, lead by the Lord of Bones. "Lord of Bones. Been a long time." Tormund greets him.
"Is he wearing bones?" Shireen asked her father quietly but the room was so quiet everyone heard what she asked. Before Stannis could answer his daughter the wildling beat him to it.
"Aye, he wears the bones of his enemies as armor. And instead of a helmet, he wears a giant's skull." Tormund told her with a smile on his face as if what he just said wasn't horrifying and completely outlandish.
"Giants don't exist. They're just like the White Walkers, nothing more than a legend." Stannis told his daughter through gritted teeth. He wouldn't have some damn wildling make his daughter believe in such absurd tales. Tormund let out a short, quiet chuckle. Oh, the kneelers were in for a surprise.
The northern lords shifted uneasily in their seats. They have been hearing more and more reports from wildlings and members of the Night's Watch about the Others returning. Normally they wouldn't believe them but they all told the exact same story so there had to be something there. And with dragons coming back into the world who knew if the White Walkers were real or fake? They prayed to the gods that they were fake.
"Last time I saw you the little crow was your prisoner. The other way around now. What happened?" The Lord of Bones asks.
Oh great, of course, he'd get himself captured by wildlings. As Jon mused about how and why he was still alive if he had been captured by wildlings the Starks in the room were giving the wildling looks that promised pain. Well, most of the Starks anyway.
Tormund was pretty sure he was about to burn on the spot with how intense the looks sent his way were. Luckily he was saved by the voice of the person that brought them here.
"Hello, I'm back, though you could probably already tell. I forgot a few things so I'll let you continue once I fix those mistakes." There was an audible snapping sound and a chair just like the one Jon sat on appeared next to him. Actually, a lot of chairs just appeared out of nowhere in his vicinity. They all had the same red and black coloring that was very similar to the Targaryen colors. And just like Jon's chair, they all seemed to have a symbol on the back that was covered for some unknown reason.
Certain people were already sure what the significance of the colors and covered symbol was but they wisely kept their mouths shut.
"Tormund I would suggest you get your arse behind that invisible wall unless you want to be skinned alive by all of the people glaring at you. And before you ask, yes I have made it so you can pass through just fine." The voice said again.
Tormund decided to do as he was told. He would much rather die fighting against the White Walkers than some southern lords for something he hadn't even done yet. He chose one of the seats a little further away from the little crow. He didn't fully trust Jon yet and the feeling was mutual.
Before any of the Starks could move seats the voice spoke up once more. "Before any of you plan on switching seats I should inform you that the wall is back up again and will only open for certain people after you watch certain parts of the future." The Stark children were about to protest about how they should get to sit with Jon since they are his family while Tormund was just some wildling.
Before they could the voice spoke up one last time. "In the meantime here are your direwolves." The Starks paused, they completely forgot their direwolves weren't here with them. Everyone else was shocked. Since when did the Starks have direwolves? There haven't been any sightings of direwolves in the north for hundreds of years. "I should also probably tell you that when I brought them here they aged up for some reason so they are a lot bigger now."
Everyone's eyes widened once they saw them. They were so big some of the children could use them as mounts if they wanted to. The wolves happily rushed over to their owners. Jon felt much more at ease now that he had Ghost with him once again. The Starks were also very surprised at how much Ghost grew. He was the runt of the litter yet he outgrew all of his siblings.
"Why is that one smaller than the others?" Edmure asked Sansa who was staring at a direwolf pup that ran up to her at the same time as Lady.
"I do not know Uncle. I have only ever had Lady." She said picking up the little wolf.
"That one is called Ice. It belongs to you Sansa, though you only get her in the future so I thought, why not bring her as well." The voice informed them of the little one. Sansa had already taken Ice as her own and Lady did not seem to mind. Arya, Bran and Rickon were a little jealous that their sister got two direwolves while they only got one but they let it go once they saw how happy Sansa was.
"War." Is the short reply Tormund gives.
"You call that a war? The greatest army the North has ever seen cut to pieces by a southern king." The Lord of Boners says.
"Hahaha." Robert let out a laugh and started boasting about what he assumed was his future victory. "Looks like we finally defeated those wild fuckers." That got some cheers from the other lords, especially the northern ones. The king must have finally helped out the watch financially and sent more men so that they could win against the wildlings once and for all.
"What makes you think you've won?" Tormund asked sharply. He would not stand for this disrespect for his people.
"It is obvious that you lost wildling. Our forces beat yours forcing you into negotiations with the Night's Watch. That's why Jon Snow and the Watch are in Hardhome with you. There is simply no other reason why they would be there unless it were to fight or negotiate. And since you're not fighting..." Tyrion trailed off before taking a sip of his wine.
"Where in the seven hells did you get that from?" Bronn asked the imp. He had been sharing tales and jokes with the half-man and hadn't even noticed the wine.
"I found it underneath my seat. It was in a box with writing on it saying: "Use wisely. You'll need it." Which leads me to believe something terrible is going to happen in the future that we are watching." Tyrion's ominous statement coupled with the threat of dragons returning was enough to make some start to reach for the wine that was underneath their own seats.
"We should gather the elders find somewhere quiet to talk." Tormund suggests.
"You don't give the orders here." The old bag of bones says.
"I'm not giving an order."
"Why aren't you in chains?" Annoying Bone guy asks Tormund.
"He's not my prisoner." Jon says to which Lord Bone asks. "What is he?"
"We're allies." At Jon's answer the Hardhome wildlings complain loudly.
The lords in the room complained along with the wildlings on screen.
"I'm starting to see why that wall is there." Tormund said to Jon. "Some of those kneelers look like they want to kill you, little crow." Jon had to begrudgingly agree with the wildling. Some of the lords did indeed look like they wanted to see Jon's head on a pike. And don't even get him started on the northern ones. Jon could see Ghost observing the people on the other side of the wall carefully, ready to jump in his defense at any sign of danger. Jon could not have asked for a more faithful companion than his direwolf.
Catelyn was silently fuming. She always knew that filthy bastard was up to something. He was probably trying to get the wildlings on his side to help him take Winterfell from her true children. Hopefully watching this future would reveal the bastard's true intentions to her husband and children.
Unlike most of the northern lords, Lord Manderly was not outraged but rather curious. If Jon Snow and the Wildling leader Tormund considered each other allies then this could mean the fighting with the Wildlings could soon be over. It would take a while for the Wildlings to be accepted by the northern lords but with time old wounds could heal. Obviously, there were wounds that simply ran too deep to heal, but as long as a majority of the North accepted a peaceful solution it should be alright. Though it was safe to say the southern lords would probably never let the Wildlings into their lands.
Lord Boner gets pissed. "You fucking traitor! You fight for the crows now."
"I don't fight for the crows." Tormund says before Jon backs him up. "We're not here to fight. We're here to talk."
The lords scoffed. The Wildlings were not known for diplomacy. The only way to end the fighting with them would be to either kill them all or discourage them from trying to get past the Wall, but how that second option could be achieved they had no idea. They also didn't understand why the Wildlings were even trying to get south of the Wall. Sure they have always raided villages south of the Wall but they have only recently been attempting to actually get south of the Wall and stay there permanently. What had made them decide to move south? As far as they were aware there had to be some reason for it. Otherwise, they would have tried to go south long ago.
Lord of Bones is about to get Boned to death. "Is that right? You and the pretty crow do a lot of talking, Tormund. And when you're done talking, do you get down on your knees and suck his cock-"
Tormund grabs Boner Dudes staff from him and beats him to death with it. "Gather the elders and let's talk." He says once he's done killing the Lord of Bones.
"Ahh, classic Free Folk diplomacy." Tormund said with a laugh. Everyone else stared at him like he was crazy. If this is what Wildling diplomacy was then Ned's bastard would certainly not survive long in a village full of Wildlings who just witnessed their leader die at the hands of one of Jon's allies.
"What makes you think they will follow you after you just killed their leader?! You just ruined any kind of chance of solving whatever issues you have diplomatically. Not to mention that his people are probably going to murder you for killing him." The Blackfish could not understand what Tormund was thinking. The wildlings were not exactly people he would consider loyal but surely they would at least be loyal to their leaders.
A lot of the people in the room found that ironic since most swore their fealty to Robert as soon as Rhaegar was killed. Then again it's not like they wanted to follow Robert but it was a good idea to pretend to be allied with him. He was easy to manipulate and it wouldn't exactly be difficult to take over the throne after he passed. He was an easy opponent in the game of thrones. Now if only those thrice-damned Lannisters could somehow just die.
"Of course they would still follow me after that. In the REAL North strength is valued above all else. And besides, everyone hated the Lord of Bones anyway. No one will miss him." Tormund waved off his worries. That made the lords think that maybe they weren't that different from the Wildlings. Not many would be upset if Robert, the Lannisters and certain others would die. Hell, they would congratulate the person that got rid of them.
After hearing that Jon could only think about what he got himself into by entering negotiations with the Free Folk as they liked to call themselves.
INT. HARDHOME – CABIN Jon is surrounded by Karsi, a Wildling chieftess, Loboda, a Thenn, a Wildling elder, and various other Wildlings.
"Thenns… I fucking hate Thenns." Tormund said once he got sight of the damn Thenns. When asked what he had against them by Renly he replied. "If there is one thing the Free Folk hate more than the crows it's the fucking Thenns." Just what was so bad about these Thenns that could make all the other Wildlings hate them so much? The Lords thought to themselves.
"My name's Jon Snow. I'm Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. We're not friends. We've never been friends. We won't become friends today. This isn't about friendship. This is about survival. This is about putting a 700 foot wall between you and what's out there."
Jon stared at the screen in shock. He became the Lord Commander of the Nights Watch? All of his dreams of actually doing and achieving something meaningful in his life were coming true. As far as Jon was concerned this future was amazing.
The lords were slightly pacified. If Jon Snow was the Lord Commander and was willing to negotiate with the Wildlings then there had to be a good reason for it. Not only that but he was also Eddard Stark's son. There was no way Ned would raise his bastard to be someone without honor.
But that also begged the question. What the hell could convince Jon to ally with them? The Jon on screen talked about putting the Wall between the Wildlings and what's out there. So just what was out there? Surely Jon didn't believe that White Walkers or Giants were real. Those were just stories you told kids to scare them.
Howland was impressed to say the least. Jon had managed to become the Lord Commander of the Watch in less than four years. Sure the fact he is the bastard son of the Warden in the North certainly helped but it was impressive non the less. He wondered if Jon could make the other Lords flock to him like he had the men of the Night's Watch. Targaryens did have a spark that made people want to follow them. He could see the Starks congratulating Jon on his achievement, well except for Lady Stark who looked to be barely containing her anger, not that it surprised him.
"You built that wall to keep us out." Karsi reminds him even though she's wrong about that.
"Since when do the crows give 2 shits if we live?" Loboda asks him.
"In normal times we wouldn't. But these aren't normal times. The white walkers don't care if a man's Free Folk or Crow. We're all the same to them. Meat to their army. But together we can beat them."
The southern lords stared at Jon as if he was dumb. "You do realize that the White Walkers don't exist, don't you? They're just stories and legends." Tywin asked him slowly as if he was speaking to a small child. Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion were having Vietnam-like flashbacks to all the times their father spoke to them like that. The bastard was in for a rough time.
"Yes, I do know they don't exist my lord. I have no idea why my future self would believe they do exist." Jon lied through his teeth, he would never believe the stories old nan told him and his half-siblings unless there was evidence to back them up. Tywin stared at him with his calculating eyes before he nodded at Jon and sat back in his seat ready to continue watching. Tywin's children were flabbergasted, what the hell just happened?
Tywin knew Jon Snow hadn't told him the full truth. He could see it in his eyes. Jon Snow was raised by Ned Stark, and Tywin was sure that the honorable fool would make sure his children did not believe in such wild tales without some sort of proof. Now Tywin would never believe in the existence of the Others. But at the same time, he did not think it possible for dragons or direwolves to return, yet here he was, having seen the proof of their existence with his own two eyes.
The existence of the White Walkers was still ridiculous but also much more believable right now. And even if they did not exist that still meant there was something out there. Powerful enough to scare the Wildlings into peace negotiations so they could get south of the Wall.
The lords of the North were starting to reach for the ale under their seats. If the Lord Commander of the Watch believed in the existence of the White Walkers combined with all the reports they have been getting from deserters and wildlings then the chances of something being out beyond the Wall was much more likely. Maybe allying with the wildlings wasn't such a bad idea after all.
"Beat the white walkers? Good luck with that. Run from them, maybe."
Jon holds the bag full of Dragonglass to Karsi. She looks at it hesitantly. "It's not a trick. It's a gift for those who join us." Karsi examine the glass in shock. "Dragonglass. A man of the Night's Watch used one of these daggers to kill a walker."
"You saw this?" Loboda asks in disbelief.
"No. But I trust the man." Jon's answer isn't very convincing.
Sam was aware that simply trusting someone who claimed they had achieved such a feat would never be enough to convince anyone, especially not the lords of the seven kingdoms. He still had no idea why he was here, he was just a coward. Maybe he was here because his father was about to send him to the wall? That was where Jon Snow was and he was obviously important in the future. Sam came to the conclusion that the only reason for his presence here was the possibility of becoming an ally to Jon.
Just like Sam, Satin was questioning why he was even here. He was a man whore who worked in a brothel, what sort of importance could he possibly have? He would just have to wait and see.
"There are old stories about Dragonglass." Karsi says.
"There are old stories about ice spiders big as hounds." Loboda reminds her.
Karsi continues. "And with the things we've seen you don't believe them?"
The lords from the North were sending each other nervous glances. Contrary to popular belief in the south, the northerners were not savages and a lot of them were actually pretty clever. They just prayed to the old gods this was a simple misunderstanding and nothing more. Because if the Walkers were real the wall would be their only line of defense and the situation there was terrible. The castles at the wall were in bad condition and rebuilding them would take years. Not to mention the fact that only three of the nineteen castles were even operable and haven't been completely abandoned.
"Come with me and I'll share these weapons." Jon tells them.
"Come with you where?" Karsi asks.
"There are good lands south of the wall. The Night's Watch will allow you through the tunnel and allow your people to farm those lands." There is hesitation among the wildlings.
Jon Snow's plan was good indeed the northern lords had to admit. For as long as they remembered the Gifts had fertile lands and absolutely nothing was being done with them. Having the wildlings settle the Gift would solve multiple problems. The lands would actually be used for once and they could house all the wildlings there. They did not want the wildlings in their own lands, at least not until they proved they could be civil and live among them so this would be a great way to separate the wildlings from their own people for the time being.
"I knew Mance Rayder. He never wanted a war with the Night's Watch, he wanted a new life for his people. For you. We're prepared to give you that new life."
"Mance Rayder," Ned stopped for a moment to think. "Wasn't he a man of the Watch?" He asked his last living brother.
"Yes, he was. But he abandoned his post more than two decades ago. Apparently, the wildlings are calling him the King Beyond The Wall." Benjen informed the audience about who Rayder was. Safe to say Robert was not happy about someone else calling themselves king.
"If…?" Karsi asks what the catch is.
"If you swear you join us when the real war begins." Jon states his conditions.
"I wonder, what this real war is going to be?" Varys didn't notice that he said that out loud. He wondered if he could use this war as a way to help the northern Targaryen claim the throne. But there was still the issue of the Baratheons and Lannisters unless they were dead in the future. The Baratheons could easily be wiped out, now the Lannisters were a different case. As long as Tywin and Genna were alive it wouldn't be so simple. And on top of all of those, there was also Aegon Targaryen, though at the moment Varys wasn't sure if he was even alive anymore since he hadn't received any information about Aegon for a while. And to Varys it did not matter if Aegon was firstborn or not, he would support and help the Targaryen who proved himself to be worthy to be called king.
"Well, the war with the White Walkers of course." Tormund stated matter-of-factly. The southern lords rolled their eyes as if Tormund just told them a bad joke. The northern lords would have done the same but they weren't so sure anymore.
"You do know none of the lords are taking you seriously, right?" Jon quietly asked his new companion. Tormund snorted. "They are in for a surprise then king crow." He couldn't exactly call Jon little crow anymore since he was apparently the leader of the crows.
"Where is Mance?" Loboda suddenly asks.
"He died." Jon's answer makes him more suspicious. "How?"
Jon finally answers after a long pause. "I put an arrow through his heart."
Facepalms could be heard throughout the room. That was the absolute worst thing he could have said. Even Jon himself had to wince at that. Why was his future self making such bad decisions? "That was stupid." Tormund stated, staring blankly at the screen. For once everyone agreed with the wildling.
Tormund was conflicted. On one hand, he wanted to strangle Jon for killing Mance. Not that he would get the chance with how the direwolf, Ghost, was staring at him, almost daring him to make the wrong move. But on the other hand, it felt like something was missing and he hadn't heard the full story yet.
The wildlings in the cabin start to riot. "I say we send the Lord Commander back to Castle Black with no eyes." Loboda suggests brandishing his axe.
Tormund steps in to save Jon. "None of you saw Mance die! I did. The Southern King who broke our army, Stannis, wanted to burn him alive to send us a message. Jon Snow defied that cunt's orders. His arrow was mercy. What it did took courage, and that's what we need today: the courage to make peace with men we've been fighting for generations."
The few who knew about Jon's true status were pleased by this information. If they were able to change Jon's mind about joining the watch and encourage him to take the throne it would be very beneficial for everyone to know he was a merciful king. The realm had few merciful kings and those had been loved by the people.
"WHAT?!" Robert's shout shook the whole room. What in the seven hells was happening? Why would Stannis be the king? Looking at his brother Robert could see that he was almost as shocked as the rest of the lords. Everyone else was shocked as well or at least pretended to be.
"It seems that lord Stannis either became Prince Joffrey's regent or had to take over as king due to unforeseen circumstances after your death your grace." Barristan told the king the harsh truth. If he were being honest it gave him some sort of perverse pleasure watching the damn Usurper realize that he would die within the next few years. Today was a great day for Barristan, first, he learns there is a Targaryen living in the North and next he learns that Robert died. The only way his day could get any better would be to learn that the northern Targaryen was a trueborn son of Rhaegar, but he didn't want to get his hopes up that high.
The players in the game of thrones frowned. Stannis was much smarter than Robert. That made their plans of taking the throne a lot more difficult.
Cersei was internally panicking. Could Stannis have figured out her children weren't Robert's? She could see Jaime also looking nervous at the prospect of being discovered. Then a thought occurred to her. If they were watching the future then she could change it once they got back. She smirked to herself. Once they got back she would make sure her worthless husband's brother would be accused of treason and executed. Nothing would stand in between her and her children from taking the throne.
Ned was saddened by his friend's death but in all honesty, he was more saddened at what Robert had become since he took the throne. Or maybe he had always been that way and Ned was just too blind to see it. If Stannis took the throne after Robert that meant one of a few things. Either his children were illegitimate or there was a war with Stannis coming out on top. If this was true then there was a chance to put Jon on the throne. Ned had denied Jon his birthright for long enough, and now it was time to make amends, tell him the truth and beg for forgiveness. Ned vowed to fix this mess once they got out of here.
The followers of the god of light who were in the room frowned. So even four years into the future Melisandre still believed Stannis to be the prince that was promised? They shook their heads, if she really still believed that then she was truly lost. The Red Witch herself seemed pleased that Stannis became the king of Westeros as it reinforced her claims about him being the promised prince.
Once the shock wore off they caught the part about Jon defying orders. Stannis also did not appreciate being called a cunt if the look he sent Tormund was anything to go by. After making sure it wasn't possible to set Tormund on fire with his glare he turned his attention to Jon. "Defying direct orders from your king?" Stannis knew that the Watch did not partake in matters of the realm unless they involved the Watch itself, but he wanted to test the future Lord Commander.
"With all due respect my lord. The Night's Watch doesn't get involved in the matters of the seven kingdoms and therefore does not have to listen to the crown's orders." Stannis nodded at Jon's answer and looked back to the screen. At least the boy was aware of how the Watch worked.
"I lost my father, my uncle, and 2 brothers fighting the damn crows." Karsi says.
Jon had never thought about how the people on the other side of the wall had families as well. They were always depicted as wild savages but they were just normal people, trying to survive like everyone else. Well, except for the ones who raided villages and killed innocent people, but the Ironborn have done that for who even knows how long and they are still a part of the seven kingdoms. Hell, a lot of the southern lords considered the people of the north to be wild savages. Who knew how long it would take before they decided to build a wall across the Neck to keep the north out of the rest of the kingdoms?
"I'm not asking you to forget your dead. I'll never forget mine. I lost 50 brothers the night that Mance attacked the wall. But I'm asking you to think about your children now. They'll never have children of their own if we don't band together. The Long Night is coming and the dead come with it. No clan can stop them. The free folk can't stop them. The Night's Watch can't stop them. And all the southern kings can't stop them. Only together, all of us, and even then it might not be enough, but at least then we'll give the fuckers a fight." There are small nods of approval throughout the room.
Every single person in the room felt shivers go down their spine at Jon's speech. The ones who knew thought it was the Targaryen blood giving Jon a commanding presence that would make the people flock to him like sheep to a shepherd.
The ones who had no clue about Jon just assumed it was from the fear of the Walkers. While they did not believe in their existence there was just something about how the young lad had worded it. The way he said it was as if this would be their only chance at survival. Warriors such as Barristan, Jaime or the Blackfish felt an overwhelming desire to join the hidden prince in whatever fight was to come even though they still thought he was a bastard.
"You vouch for this man, Tormund?" Karsi asks.
"He's prettier than both my daughters, but he knows how to fight. He's young, but he knows how to lead. He didn't have to come to Hardhome. He came because he needs us. And we need him." He reassures her.
Jon did have some of Rhaegar's features, luckily he still took mostly after his mother, Doran thought to himself. Gods only knew what would have happened if he had looked more like his father. Maybe the war would have continued and the throne would have been retaken by the Targaryen's? Or he would have fallen victim to the same fate that Elia and her children fell to. Just thinking about it made his blood boil in anger at the Baratheons and Lannisters. If he ever got the chance to declare for Jon in the future he would do so in a heartbeat, if only to get revenge for his sister and to see the demise of both the stag and the lion.
"My ancestors would spit on me if I broke bread with a crow." Loboda says.
"So would mine, but fuck 'em, they're dead." Karsi walks in front of Jon. "I'll never trust a man in black." Karsi walks over to Tormund. "But I trust you, Tormund. If you say this is the way, we're with you."
"This is the way." Tormund confirms that there truly is no other way.
"I'm with Tormund. We stay here we're dead men. At least with King Crow there's a chance." A wildling elder said.
It was now that someone finally noticed the elephant in the room. "Is that a giant?!" Arya shouted wide-eyed once she saw how big that guy was. Catelyn was so shocked at seeing an actual giant she didn't even scold her daughter for yelling.
Podrick just waved her off. "Ah, it's just a... trick of the light. He just... looks bigger than he really is. There is no such thing as giants. Ha, ha." He finished with a weak chuckle. Not many were convinced by what he said. Podrick didn't seem to believe in what he said either, rather he was reassuring himself and trying to come up with a logical explanation.
Jon leaned over to Tormund and whispered. "Is that…?" Tormund nodded with a smile. Yes, that was indeed a giant. "Fucking hell." Jon quietly said to himself.
"Keep that new life you want to give us. Keep your glass, King Crow. Soon as you get on his ships they're gonna slit your throats and dump your bodies to the bottom of the Shivering Sea. That's our enemy. That has always been our enemy." Loboda said.
Wildlings start leaving the cabin and head towards the boats. "I fucking hate Thenns." Tormund nods at Karsi's statement.
EXT. HARDHOME – SHORE Jon, Tormund, and Karsi lead the Wildlings to the boats. "How many are with us? 5,000?" Jon asks.
"5,000? Just how many bloody wildlings are there?" Daemon, Arianne's sworn shield asked no one in particular.
Tormund scoffed. "That's nothing. There are around 100,000 Free Folk under Mance's leadership right now." He was quite bitter about it. If what the screen showed was true then only 5,000 out of all the Free Folk survived.
Once again everyone was shocked. 100,000 wildlings? How in the seven hells did they gather such huge numbers? Then again it didn't really matter just how many were there. The future had proven that the wall could hold against and defeat 100,000 wildlings so as far as the lords were concerned the wall could hold anything. Well, except for a dragon of course but that was obvious.
"I'm not good at counting." Tormund replies.
"We're leaving too many behind." Jon says, disappointed.
"You can't save everyone, Jon. There are always going to be casualties." Ned told his nephew. As bad as it may sound everyone knew it was the truth. This would also be a great lesson for the rightful king, Ned thought. Once he put a plan to put Jon on the throne into motion the seven kingdoms would go to war again and for some reason, Ned had a feeling this would be one of the biggest war's ever fought for that damn, ugly chair.
Jon sighed for he was aware there would be casualties in war, but that did not mean he wouldn't try to lessen them to a minimum. It was no secret to anyone that when the highborn fought among themselves the lowborn suffered for it. Tywin Lannister's sacking of King's Landing was only one example of the atrocities committed during the wars that were fought.
"The free folk are stubborn. You know how long it took Mance to band them together. 20 fucking years." Tormund assures him.
"And he knew them better than I ever will."
"They're running out of food and there's nothing to hunt. They'll come around." Tormund seems quite sure about his answer.
Cut to Karsi loading two children onto a boat. "Johnna is gonna look after you. She's in charge, you listen to her." Karsi tells the children.
"I wanna go with you." One of the girls says to Karsi.
"I need to get the old folks on the boats. I'm right behind you, I promise. (she kisses them on the forehead) Go on."
Again Jon didn't see wild savages, he just saw normal people who had families and friends to take care of. They just had a tendency to raid villages south of the wall. Though that issue could probably be solved if they had lands they could settle. The gift south of the Wall would be perfect. When he really thought about it, the Free Folk were really just another version of the Ironborn. Actually, he would go as far as to say the Ironborn were worse. The Free Folk didn't take slaves, that they knew of at least.
INT. HARDHOME – CABIN The Giant picks up a piece of Dragonglass and strokes it intently. Edd begins picking up the pieces of glass and looks at the giant with his piece of glass. Wun Wun turns to Edd and stares at him annoyed. "Lokh kif rukh?" "(The fuck you looking at?)" The giant asks annoyed. Edd leaves. Dogs are barking outside.
"Still believe it's a trick of the light?" Brienne asked Podrick who shook his head.
EXT. HARDHOME – SHORE Jon loads girls onto a boat then turns to hear the dogs barking. The wind starts whipping from a neighboring cliff and the dogs start whimpering. Every wildling and Crow slowly turns to the source of the noise.
"Does anyone else have this strange sense of dread, or is it just me?" Tyrion asked the occupants of the hall. They all confirmed his words, something was wrong that much they could tell. But there was a strange sense of dread in the air, it was almost suffocating. Some people's eyes even started to water in fear even though they had no idea why.
Tormund's eyes widened once he realized what was happening. "Oh, no." This was bad, if the members o the Free Folk in Hardhome weren't evacuated in time then the other's army would significantly grow in strength.
Jon glanced at his companion questioningly. "What do you mean, "Oh no"?" He had his hands buried in Ghost's fur to calm him down. Whatever was happening on screen was enough to make even his faithful direwolf start growling in warning.
The wildling could only say one thing as dread filled him. "The dead are coming."
Jon stared at the man in disbelief. He would have called him insane, but his future self believed that those monsters were indeed real and coming for them all and he found himself believing it too.
The followers of the god of light stared at the screen in intrigue. Was the Great Other making his move already? Did they manage to find the promised prince? Was the northern Targaryen who was chosen by the two dragons the promised prince? So many questions yet so little answers.
EXT. HARDHOME – GATE "Shut the gate." Men hurry towards the gate to board it up. More howling from the distance. The Wildlings on the other side of the gate begin charging the gate. "Shut the gate!" Loboda orders not caring about the wildlings being left behind.
"So he is just going to leave them behind? Does he not care about his people?" He was aware that sometimes you couldn't afford to lose time and had to sacrifice some of the soldiers to cover the retreat of the main army, but Ned could not grasp why the wildlings would shut out the rest of their people like that. As far as Ned and the other lords could tell there was nothing other than an avalanche and strong winds creating howling noises. Then again, Hardhome is rumored to be haunted.
"There wasn't enough time. Everyone beyond that gate was already lost." It pained Tormund to say this but there was no way to save them. The dead were just too fast to outrun.
What did he mean by 'everyone beyond that gate was already lost'? The lords thought to themselves as the feeling of dread from before only got worse with each passing second.
Unlike the rest of the audience, Jon had already figured out what that meant. He did not look forward to seeing himself fight dead men that came back to life.
Men rush to put a board in place to hold the gate shut. "Wait! Open the gate! Let us in! Help us! Please open it!" After a while the voices stop and eerie silence resumes.
The whole audience waited with bated breath. Rickon, being only three years old, hid his face in his mother's neck just barely peeking at the screen. Bran, Arya and Sansa weren't doing much better as they inched closer to their parents. Shireen was also seen sitting closer to the onion knight and her father.
Everyone was very disturbed by what was happening on screen. Their hatred for the wildlings was overshadowed by the fear they felt at how all the voices pleading to be let in just stopped so suddenly.
Loboda walks to the gate with his axe and peers through a small hole in the wall. There is a faint scream in the distance, then a wight charges at the hole in the wall.
"Ready your arrows!" The wights claw at the gate. Arrows are nocked and fired. A wight sticks his hand through the gate and Loboda chops it off.
"WHAT IN THE SEVEN HELLS!?" Robert's shout finally snapped everyone out of their shock. The lords all started shouting at each other in shock and fear of the others actually existing. The Stark's direwolves barking and growling only helped in causing more panic in the already terrified audience.
Catelyn and Ned could be seen holding their younger children close. Even the ever-stoic Stannis was staring at the screen in terror while holding his terrified daughter.
Tyrion and Bronn spat out their wine in comical unison. Tyrion had never been a godly man and he had always thought these types of stories to just be legends. Looking over at the rest of his family he saw they were all terrified as well, even his fierce aunt Genna, but there was something else as well, something he never thought he would get to witness. His father was wide-eyed at the abomination being shown on screen, it was the only time Tyrion had ever seen true fear on his face. It was something that made the imp quite happy with himself, to see the undefeatable Tywin Lannister nearly shitting himself from terror.
To think he and his black brothers had gone into the territory of these monsters so many times and never even seen any signs of these things. It made Benjen wonder just how many of his brothers had gone missing and become one of the wights. Just how many of the men who deserted had seen proof of these unholy creatures, only for the night's watchmen or the lords to think them mad.
Ned thought back to the deserter he executed the day his sons found their direwolves, Will was his name. Ned had thought him mad, but after seeing the others he could only sigh in disappointment at his past actions. Why didn't he just listen to Will, or any of the other deserters who raved on and on about how they saw the walkers. Or even old nan, she always told stories to his children, some being about the walkers. Why did everything he do end in disaster, placing Robert on the throne helped destroy the realm even more, not placing Jon on the throne resulted in Robert taking the throne, and the Others would destroy the realm if Robert didn't do it first.
Jon turned to Tormund in shock. "How in the hell did you survive with those things beyond the wall?" By now everyone had calmed down and was listening in on their conversation. The wildling was their only source of information on the monsters beyond the wall.
"We didn't." At everyone's confused looks he continued. "Sometimes we would have someone saying they saw dead men walking, but we never really believed them. But some 30 years ago more and more of us saw them and realized they are very real. Mance saw the danger they were to us and started trying to unite all the tribes to find protection behind the wall. He even managed to get those damn Thenn cunts to come with him."
"So everyone who dies beyond the wall becomes one of them?" When Tormund confirmed his question, Jon paled. "But if that's the case then everyone who died in the fight between your army and Stannis's turned into one of them." The realization that the army of the dead grew so much in numbers was enough to make Tormund pale as well. "Oh, fuck…" Tormund said what everyone was thinking.
"Wait, wait, wait. Are you trying to tell us there are about 100,000 dead men coming to kill us all?!" Gendry asked the wildling and presumed bastard of Eddard Stark. Could Westeros even raise an army big enough to fight that?
"No, what they are trying to tell us is that there are at least 100,000 dead men coming to kill us if not much more than that." Olenna Tyrell corrected the bastard of Robert. She scoffed, that idiot couldn't tell Gendry was his bastard even though he looks exactly like Robert in his youth. Stannis and lord Stark noticed if the looks they sent Gendry were anything to go by.
"I assume you believe there are many more than that grandmother?" It wasn't really a question but more of a statement. Olenna was glad her grandson Willas inherited her intelligence and not Mace's. Just thinking about her son irritated her to no end.
"Of course, there are more. Since these things actually exist then the Long Night isn't a myth but a true story. These monsters have been gaining strength and growing in number for the past 8,000 years." That made the lords very nervous, the others had 8,000 years to amass and army while the lords of Westeros had been at war with each other and wasting their time, resources and manpower.
"Which means that every person who died beyond the wall in that time period became a wight." Genna Lannister finished the Queen of Thorns' point. This was terrible but also a boon. The only way to defeat the others would be to unite the seven kingdoms, and the only way to unite Westeros is to find a common enemy coming to kill them all.
"Not exactly." Tormund cut in. "The Free Folk and the crows burn their dead so they don't rise from the dead. So not every single person who died will come back, but a lot definitely will."
"So knowing all of that just how many could there possibly be?" Jaime asked. He could feel his sword hand twitch at the sight of the wight and he was sure the other fighters in the room felt the same.
"I believe I could help with that." Sam said meekly turning all the attention on him. He gathered his courage (he had no idea where this confidence was suddenly coming from). "Let's assume there are always between 50,000 and 100,000 people living beyond the wall. If the average lifetime is 50 year-"
Tormund cut Sam off laughing loudly. "Very generous kneeler, make it 40." Sam took Tormund's suggestion into consideration, life beyond the wall was harsh, they wouldn't live long out there.
"-40 years, then there would be between, ehhh, 10 and 20 million deaths in the last 8,000 years." Sam stared at his own notes and calculations the same way everyone stared at him, completely dumbfounded, that was more than he expected. "Just how many of the dead do you burn?" He nervously asked the wildling.
"Ehh, 9 out of 10 maybe, depends if they died alone or close to our villages." Tormund said. Fucking hells that would still be a lot of wights. That percentage reassured most people, maybe they would have a chance.
Sam wasn't as enthusiastic though. "So that means there would be between 1 to 2 million wights and now another 100,000 on top of that." There was complete silence once Sam was finished. "I mean, t-this is just speculation, it's probably a lot less, heh heh…" He finished with a nervous chuckle.
(I tried to make these calculations as accurate as possible but there is too little context, so this is the best realistic number I could come up with. IRL that number would be way higher since I highly doubt the average lifespan could be 40 years in that wasteland, 25-30 years more likely. Not to mention that there is no way in hell the wildlings would be able to burn 90% of their dead, that would be 40-70% if it was realistic. And we also don't know just how many wights survived the first long night. I should also state that there is no way there are 100,000 wildlings beyond the wall. A realistic number would be 20,000-50,000 wildlings living beyond the wall at all times throughout history. But I know for a fact that there would be more than the 100,000 we get in the show.)
Olenna was proud of young Sam, it really was a shame his father couldn't see what a talented son he has. That feeling of pride however was overshadowed by horror. An army of dead men with numbers possibly in the millions, coming to kill them all.
"Dear gods… can the seven kingdoms even raise an army big enough in number to fight them?" Edmure asked no one in particular. As far as anyone knew the seven kingdoms could raise maybe 300,000 swords though not even half of them would be seasoned soldiers.
"What does it matter how many men we have? Jon Snow said earlier that they can only be killed with weapons made of valyrian steel and dragonglass. Even if we could raise an army to fight them we only have enough weapons to arm a few hundred men at most." Tywin told the future lord paramount of the Riverlands. Gods, Tywin couldn't wait for the day that fool Edmure took over the title. It would open up so many possibilities, the only real problem would be Brynden "The Blackfish" Tully.
"I think you're both forgetting something." Genna said turning the attention on her. "Anyone who gets killed by them becomes one of them. If there are really a million wights and we somehow managed to raise one million swords then just how many of our men will fall and join the dead?" Now that was something none of them had thought about yet. "Each of our soldiers would have to kill at least 2 or 3 wights to make sure that each of our men that turn into wights also get killed."
Jaime had to admit that his aunt was absolutely right. Of course, she was, his aunt was one of the smartest women in Westeros. It was such a shame she was not born a man and therefore couldn't do certain things like planning for war which she was definitely qualified for. Most of the men in their armies were not trained because they were simple lowborn that were called up by their lords. They usually only killed one enemy and sometimes not even that, before dying themselves which would only help to keep the number of wights at the exact same level.
"There are large deposits of dragonglass on Dragonstone which we could use to arm thousands of men. I highly doubt there would be enough to arm all the men we need to fight the army of the dead." Stannis reminded everyone. "But if we start mining as soon as we get back to Westeros we might have a chance."
"We may not be able to get enough weapons made of dragonglass, but we can burn them." Oberyn reminded them in a playful tone, there was a strange glint in his eyes and a sly smile on his face. Doran caught on immediately, he wondered how the Usurper would react to what his brother was planning.
"Well, no shit we can burn them. How exactly does that information help us?" Bronn asked Prince Oberyn. Catelyn and Cersei were appalled by how rudely he spoke. How dare that sellsword speak that way to royalty.
"Well, we know that someone in the north will have two grown, ridable dragons. I'm sure that if the Targaryen sees proof of the others he will help us-" Oberyn said before he was cut off by the Usurper.
"WE WILL NOT SIDE WITH THE DRAGONSPAWN! ANYONE WHO DOES SHALL HAVE THEIR HEAD REMOVED FROM THEIR SHOULDERS!" Robert roared in fury. He should have known those damn Dornish snakes would betray him and side with the dragonspawn. He was about to draw the sword he had with him as he couldn't use his warhammer anymore. Before he could do that though his most trusted friend spoke up.
"With all due respect your Grace, but we don't have a choice in the matter. If we don't put aside our differences then there won't be a kingdom left to rule over." Ned tried to calm down the king. He couldn't allow his old friend to kill someone who could become an ally to Jon once he tries to place him on the throne. Not that Robert could beat the Red Viper, but unnecessary bloodshed would be prevented.
Robert was still furious but had to agree that Ned was right. Not that it mattered. Once they finished the others or in the chaos of battle he would kill this northern Targaryen. It would be just like the days of the rebellion.
Oberyn sent a grateful look to Ned. It seems that the Lord of Winterfell had finally decided to stab his friend in the back. "That aside we also have the wall between us and them. We already know that facing them in an open field would result in too many casualties who would rise again on our enemy's side." The northern Lords agreed with the Dornishman.
"Aye, we may not have the numbers, but the wall will help us hold them at bay even with a much smaller force." Greatjon Umber boasted loudly. The wall would make sure they could defeat the others.
"Yes, but what about the Gorge? The wildlings often raid us and the other mountain clans by crossing the Bridge Of Skulls since it's under-defended." The Wull said shooting a glare at Tormund who smirked back at him.
"So, we destroy the Bridge Of Skulls, rebuild the 16 ruined castles along the wall and man all of them. We should be able to do that in the next few years if we get resources and support from the other kingdoms and from the crown." Benjen said while looking pointedly at the southern lords and the king. It was a well-known fact that the south did not respect the north, its traditions or beliefs. But now they had no choice but to help them rebuild the wall and the watch to its former glory. The survival of Westeros and all of humanity depended on them now.
EXT. HARDHOME – SHORE There is a mad rush towards the boats with many people jumping in the water to catch one. "Get in line! Get in line!" Jon shouts trying to restore order amidst the panic.
Tormund shook his head. "I don't think that's going to work King crow." There would be a massacre, that much he knew. He was sure Jon knew what would happen as well.
Jon sighed. "You know I'm not the Lord Commander of the Watch, right? I'm not even a part of the watch yet."
"Aye, I know. But your future self is." The wildling said with a smirk. His smirk got even wider when Jon threw his hands up in exasperation.
EXT. HARDHOME – GATE A wight tries to climb the gate.
INT. HARDHOME – CABIN Wights crawl to the top of the cabin and jumps through the hole in the roof. The men prepare their weapons and the giant growls.
While the audience was terrified of the wights the prospect of watching a giant, a being from old legends and myths, fight, was very exciting.
The seasoned warriors like Ser Barristan or Jaime had to admit that against a giant they probably wouldn't last very long.
EXT. HARDHOME – GATE One wight tries to climb under the gate. A barrage of arrows flies at the wights trying to get through the wall. Most of them land. The wight crawls even further under the gate. The wights start making holes in the gate. A sword sticks through the gate coming close to Loboda on the gate. Loboda dodges the sword, looks down to see the wight crawling under the gate, and stomps its head in.
"So we don't need that much dragonglass. Crushing their heads in is also an option." One of the less… intelligent lords commented. People shook their heads at his stupidity. No one would even try to get close enough to do that. It would be a last resort.
"You do that, we'll watch safely from very far away while you try to get close enough to stomp their heads in." Bronn said getting some of the lords to laugh. King Robert roared with laughter while the lord who suggested the idea was scowling and trying to keep his anger in check.
EXT. HARDHOME – SHORE The people continue to rush onto the boats with Jon, Tormund, and Karsi leading them. "Hold the line! Hold the line!" Jon shouts.
"Lord Commander!" A brother of the Night's Watch shouts after him.
"Get them to the ship and come back for me!" He says while trying to make his way through the wildlings running to the boats.
"But you'll never make it-" The crow continues before Jon silences him. "Now!"
Karsi approaches Jon. "You should be on one of those boats." Jon tells her.
"So should you! My little girl has gone on. They're gonna let them pass the wall even if you're not there?" She asks doubting that they would.
Tormund shot a look at Jon. "Do you think they would?" He asked the future Lord Commander skeptically.
"The Night's Watchmen are loyal to their Lord Commander. Since I'm the Lord Commander in the future then they would have to obey my order to let them through." Jon told his wildling… friend? Well, Tormund didn't seem to hate him at least, that was something.
Jon tries to reassure her. "You have my word. I've given orders."
"Don't think you're gonna be there to enforce those orders!" Karsi heads back to helping people onto the boats.
The meaning of Karsi's words was not lost on anyone. "I don't want Jon to die." Arya said to her father. She prayed to the gods her favorite brother would survive.
"Don't worry girl! If your brother is anything like his father was at his age then he will kill those dead men with ease!" Robert assured his friend's daughter.
Jon should have been stunned. Receiving praise from a King was a great honor. But Robert Baratheon left a lot to be desired as a King. So his praise did not hold much weight for Jon.
Tormund gets his attention. "If they get through, everyone dies!"
Jon and Tormund pull out their weapons. "Night's Watch with me! Move! Move! Move!" Jon, Tormund, Karsi, and the Night's Watch brothers charge from the shore to the gate.
Robert couldn't help himself and grinned. It was like the days of his rebellion. Ned's bastard sure looked like his father did back in those days. Charging into battle, barking out orders to his men. Gods, it was a shame Robert's own son Joffrey was such a weakling.
EXT. HARDHOME – SHORE The wights have knocked a hole into the gate big enough to crawl out of. One breaks through, tears someone apart, and then is taken down. A group of wights storm through the same hole. Cut to an overhead that shows just how many wights are behind the gate.
"Dear gods… There are so many of them." Jorah said. How was Jon Snow going to get out of there alive? He could feel the Lord of Winterfell's glare. Jorah couldn't exactly blame him either, he did sell people into slavery.
"And to think this is only a fraction of their forces." Brynden shook his head. Unless everyone let go of their old grudges and united they were utterly fucked. He promised himself that once they were out of here, he would set things right with Hoster.
Jon arrives at the gate. He pins a wight to the gate with Longclaw as Tormund and Karsi kill the wights that have already gotten through. The archers take out the wight Jon pinned to the gate, and then the men cover the hole the wights had been escaping from with a sled.
Fighting continues. A group of wights tear into a Crow. Loboda and Karsi continue to kill the wights.
Jon looks up through the mist and sees 4 White Walkers on horseback on the top of the cliff. Tormund and Loboda notice them as well. "The Dragonglass!"
"Those must be their leaders or something. If they even have those." Ser Davos said. It made them all think. Normally the easiest way to defeat an army was to kill the leader, once he was gone the rest of the army usually surrendered. But did the wights work the same way? Or would they just keep tearing them apart once their leaders died?
"You're with me, lad! Now!" Loboda shouts at him.
Tormund huffed. "Finally the damned Thenn cunt changed his mind." He ignored the glares he got from the southern women for his language. Tormund would never understand those damn southerners. They just learned about the others coming to kill them all and yet they still cared more about his foul language.
Jon and Loboda charge towards the cabin. Jon cuts a wight in half then kills another. The giant breaks through a wall in the cabin as the cabin starts to go down in flames.
Jon watches as he shakes the wights off of his back, snapping some in half and stomping others into pieces. Jon and Loboda storm the cabin.
"Well, fuck me… you got any more of those Giants?" Bronn asked the wildling who in his opinion was far better company than the highborn who were in the room with them. Except for the imp, he was quite entertaining.
"Aye, there are a few hundred left. Not sure why only Wun Wun is there." He wondered what happened to the other giants. Did they die attacking the wall, fighting the southern king or the white walkers?
"Maybe they got killed during the fight between the Free Folk and lord Stannis." Jon said. Tormund grunted in agreement, that was the most likely outcome.
"So the Others have possibly hundreds of giants in their army as well." Jaime said which only served to make everyone even more worried. "I hope the wall is high enough." No one really wanted to, but they had to agree with the kingslayer there.
INT. HARDHOME – CABIN The entire cabin is on fire. A White Walker wielding a spear walks towards them menacingly, through the fire.
"Isn't that one of those…" Brienne paused looking for the right word. "...things we saw on the horses?"
"Aye, he looks very…" Lord Manderly started.
"Terrifying, intimidating, menacing?" Tyrion interrupted the fat lord of White Habor.
"I don't like your chances." Tormund said with a frown.
"I don't like them either." Jon wasn't sure if his future self could handle what he assumed was a white walker. Though it would be nice if he could kill it, not only would he kill a living legend, but he would also get to survive.
"Get the glass." Loboda walks towards the White Walker as Jon scrambles towards the Dragonglass. Loboda misses with his axe twice, getting it caught in the wall. He pulls it out to parry in time, but the Walker's spear shatters his axe. The Walker plunges his spear through Loboda's stomach killing him.
"Now I really don't like your chances." Tormund's frown got bigger. "You should run." Tormund had no idea the Others could just shatter their weapons.
"Did his axe just shatter?" Robb asked no one in particular. No one could fathom how a weapon could just shatter like ice.
"You saw that too? Good to know I'm not completely drunk yet." Tyrion raised his goblet and took another hearty gulp of his wine as did many others.
"So that's why we need dragonglass and valyrian steel. Our weapons shatter when they clash with theirs." Renly laughed incredulously. They wouldn't even be able to defend themselves with regular weapons.
Jon reaches the glass but is thrown across the room by the Walker before he can pick it up, causing Longclaw to fly out of the cabin.
There was a lot of cursing going through the room that made the ladies look shocked. The lords assumed their only future source of information about the Others was about to die.
"That is not good." Varys said mostly to himself. Jon Snow was the only one of them who would face the Others in the future. Keeping him alive could help Varys with his plans for placing Aegon or the northern Targaryen on the throne. Having the future king ally himself with Jon Snow to defeat the Others would certainly endear him to the lords of Westeros, especially the northern ones.
"Well, no shit it's not good. He's fuckin' defenseless now!" Bronn said before being shut up by Tyrion. Men like Varys were not the type of men you wanted to piss off. Who knew what dirty secrets they could find out about you.
"The wildling had a weapon and it didn't do him any good. It just shattered once it touched the Walker's spear. I doubt the sword would have helped him." Varys responded and surprisingly most had to agree with him. That didn't mean they trusted the master of whispers though.
"That's Longclaw." Jorah said. He was surprised. How did Ned Stark's bastard get his family's sword?
Ned also noticed. "How did Jon get the ancestral sword of house Mormont?" He asked out loud.
Jon ducks from the Walker's swings with his spear, and runs to the upper floor to grab another sword. As Jon swings at the Walker, the Walker swings and shatters the sword. He uses the back end of his weapon to knock Jon down to the lower floor knocking the wind out of him.
Ned was clenching his armrests so hard he could feel them breaking. He pulled his children closer. They were just as worried for Jon as he was. The only one of the Starks who did not seem bothered in the slightest was to no one's surprise, his wife. "Do not worry, your brother will be fine." His reassurances didn't have much of an effect. Other than Catelyn frowning at how the children were worried about Jon.
Jaime cringed. "You'll be lucky if that only bruises your ribs." He remembered the stories he heard from Ser Barristan about Rhaegar's demise.
Ser Barristan shuddered. That reminded him way too much of the Usurper when he caved Prince Rhaegar's chest in. Jon Snow was lucky that was not a warhammer or a mace. Now that he took a closer look, Jon's face had features similar to Rhaegar's. He shook his head, it was just his mind playing tricks on him.
The Blackfish nodded. "Aye, a fall like that could break your ribs. Hell, I have seen some men pass out from hitting their head in a fall like that one."
Under normal circumstances, Jon would have been ecstatic about famed warriors like Ser Jaime talking to him and giving him advice, but he could only feel dread. He had a weird feeling that he wouldn't live long in the future they were watching.
Jon struggles to get up, then gets up again, running to pick up Longclaw. He stumbles and drops the sword. The White Walker staggers towards him.
Catelyn couldn't help the irritation she felt when she heard her children's shouts for the bastard to get up. Why did they have to like the damn bastard so much? Why did her husband have to make her suffer so much? He should have left the bastard with his mother as all the other lords do.
Robb looked over at his half-brother. "You better not die, Snow!" On the inside he was worried but he covered it up.
"Wouldn't dream of it Stark." Jon replied with a strained smile. Something bad would happen to him soon he could feel it.
(The fight between Jon and the White Walker was kind of disappointing IMO so I decided to write my own fight scene. Sorry if it sucks but I just couldn't in good conscience leave the short fight we got in the show in here. I mean seriously the White Walkers are supposed to be powerful and the fight ended in two swings. Not to mention the whole Hardhome situation didn't happen in the books so I can do pretty much whatever I damn well please.)
Jon picks up Longclaw just in time to match the White Walker, and to both of their surprises, Longclaw stops the Walker's spear.
Jon closed his eyes not wanting to see his death. Only to open them once he heard cheering from his family and some other people who were with them. To his surprise, his future self actually survived.
"How did his sword not shatter?!" They would have rolled their eyes at Podrick's comment if not for the fact they also forgot valyrian steel could kill the Others. Then again it's not like they knew it would hold against an Other's weapon.
"Longclaw is made of valyrian steel. Like Jon Snow said earlier, valyrian steel can kill them." Jorah clarified for any of the slower lords.
Quickly getting over his surprise the Walker tries to slash at Jon from the left. He blocks and pushes the Walker's spear off to the side. As the Walker's spear was pushed aside it left his entire body open and Jon took the opportunity to ram his shoulder into the Walker pushing him back.
Jaime along with the other famed knights watched the battle with great attention. He came to the conclusion that while Jon Snow was a good fighter there was still a lot left for him to learn. He could have tried to finish his opponent instead of pushing him back. Not that Jaime could blame him that much. He would have tried to get as far away from the ice monster as possible.
Jon and the Walker slowly circled each other, waiting for who would make the first move, the fighting around them completely forgotten. The first attack came from the Walker who tried to hit Jon with an overhead slash.
"Predictable and easy to deflect." Jaime mused. The Walker had obviously never faced anyone who could actively fight back. There was no way the wildlings had valyrian steel. And he highly doubted the Walker had any sort of proper training. The Walker would have to rely on luck and pure strength alone if it wanted to win.
Jon parried the Walker's attack and went in for the kill. Just as Jon was about to kill the Walker, a Wight came charging at him forcing Jon to take his attention away from the Walker and instead focusing on the dead man who came to save it's master.
"Oh, come on!" Robert roared making, startling those around him. "Bloody dead cunt!" It just had to come when the bastard was about to finally kill the Other. "Listen, boy, you kill that Walker and get out of there alive and I'll legitimize you as a Stark!" He said with a hearty laugh.
There was not a single person who did not stare at Robert in complete surprise. Giving the bastard the Stark name just like that? Then again killing a creature of legend that could probably give the kingslayer or Barristan The Bold a run for their money would be an impressive feat. If he did kill the Walker he would be deserving of a reward, and what better than giving him his father's name?
While Jon was over the moon that he could become a true Stark, and his siblings as well if the looks on their faces were anything to go by, he inwardly cringed. He could already see Lady Catelyn turning red in her anger. Lord Stark also had a weird expression on his face. Did he not want to legitimize Jon? No, he probably just didn't want to deal with his wife.
"And what is the point in that? He gave up all his titles when he joined the Night's Watch." Catelyn spoke up with a barely concealed sneer. There was no way in the seven hells she would let that bastard get the Stark name so that he could usurp her children.
"Aye, the one in the future did, but the one here with us is not a part of the Watch yet." Robert told her with a smile completely missing her ire. "What do you say, Ned? I believe this decision is long overdue already." He asked his best friend. As for Ned, he looked uncomfortable as hell right now.
"We shouldn't make any rash decisions right now. We'll speak about this later and we shall speak no more of this now." He couldn't accept this. He couldn't just give Jon the Stark name if he planned to put him on the throne. He would have to talk to Jon about this as well. He'd have to tell him about his true parents. That was a conversation he had delayed long enough.
Robert looked a bit annoyed but he let it go. He knew just how insufferable Cat would be once he legitimized Jon, but he would do it anyway.
The Stark children stared at their father in shock. Why would he not make Jon a Stark? They gave their brother sad looks but he wasn't even looking in their direction. Jon was waiting for the visions of his future self to start moving again.
Jon stepped back from the Walker. He quickly sidestepped the Wight making it stumble forward while Jon spun around and decapitated the dead man from behind. He focused on the Walker as soon as the Wight dropped dead.
(I know that in a real fight you would never spin but this is fantasy so it doesn't have to make even the slightest bit of sense.)
The northerners cheered and shouted out encouragements when Jon killed the Wight. The Stark's loudest among them, much to Catelyn's chagrin. Even some of the southerners joined in, namely the Riverlands and the Vale. And while the future Jon couldn't hear them, the one watching his future self certainly appreciated them.
The two enemies focused on each other again. Jon couldn't afford to waste any more time, the Wight's would break through the gate soon. He had to finish this quickly. This time Jon didn't wait and went on the offensive first.
The Walker blocked Jon's swing and hit him with the back of his spear in the chest again though not as hard this time, only pushing him back slightly. The Walker put all of his force into an overhead swing that Jon barely blocked and had to struggle to make sure it didn't come down on him.
There is that raw strength. Who would have thought that a magical creature had superior strength to regular people, Jaime thought to himself. There was something about the bastard that seemed familiar to Jaime. He couldn't place it, but there was something there.
The Walker and Jon were left in a struggle, both of them trying to overpower the other. The Walker was slowly gaining on Jon and almost had his spear at his neck so in a last desperate move Jon grabbed his blade in one hand and pushed hitting the Walker in the face with his sword's crossguard.
"Half-swording?" Brynden muttered to himself. Now that was something that wasn't often seen. At least not in Westeros. Very effective against armor though not many people try using it.
The hit in the face made the Walker stumble backwards leaving him open and this time Jon did not miss. He thrust Longclaw into the Walker's belly. The walker looked at the man who defeated him in shock for a few seconds before letting out a gut wrenching shriek as he shattered like ice into thousands of pieces.
Everyone cringed at the horrible noise the Walker made before they started cheering. The northerners were by far the loudest, with only Robert being able to match them in volume. "HA HA, take that you wretched beast!"
Tormund bear hugged Jon. "You fucking did it, King Crow! You killed a fucking Walker!" He was aware of Ghost staring at him with those red knowing eyes, almost daring him to do something. Or he just wanted Tormund to let go of Jon before he passed out from the lack of air.
"Someone give me some paper and something to write!" Robert bellowed to no one in particular once the cheering died down.
"What for your Grace?" Doran asked. He found this predicament to be quite amusing. Robert Baratheon wanted to legitimize the son of Rhaegar Targaryen. Oh, how he couldn't wait for the moment it all came crashing down.
"I said I would legitimize the boy if he killed the beast and kill it he did!" Robert responded to the dornishman.
"I hate to ruin this, but do I need to remind you there are at least three more of those things?" Renly asked his brother. Beating that Walker was impressive, but what could Jon Snow hope to do against another three if he could barely beat one of them?
Robert grumbled. "Fine. I'll just do it once we're done watching this future, vision or whatever it's called."
The Starks were happy for their brother. He would officially become a Stark like them. They could see their mother's anger and it worried them. While she couldn't take her anger out on the king she could on Jon.
Catelyn fumed. The damn bastard was actually going to be legitimized. She would not let this happen. Over her dead body.
Jon falls to the ground after the struggle, completely exhausted and tired. The Night King watches him alone from the top of the cliff.
"Who wants to bet that's their leader?" Tyrion asked. Pretty much everyone raised their hand to show their agreement.
EXT. HARDHOME – GATE Tormund and Karsi continue to tear through wights. Karsi looks up, and sees a group of blue-eyed wight children staring at her. They do nothing for a moment, then charge at her, chewing and clawing her to death as she screams in pain.
Not a single person did not look away from the screen. It was one thing to watch dead men come back to life, but watching dead children clawing someone to death was just too much.
Cut to Jon crawling across the snow, coughing up blood.
"Yeah, your ribs are fucked." Bronn's comment got a lot of nods and some glares as well. Not that he cared, he was simply telling the truth. "What? It's true ain't it?"
"Thank you, I had no idea." Jon said dryly. Jon totally wasn't aware he could die from an injury like that.
"You're welcome lad." Bronn said with a shit-eating grin on his face.
A man grabs him and Jon puts Longclaw to his neck. The man turns out to be Edd and they lower their weapons. "The Dragonglass!"
"Fuck the glass! We're gonna die here." Edd shouts at him.
A screech comes from the top of the cliff. Hundreds of wights dive from the top of the cliff. They appear to have died for a brief moment after landing.
Podrick stared at the screen in confusion. "At least they're dead now." Awkward silence and blank stares. "Well, you know, dead dead."
But then wake up and charge at Jon and Edd who run away.
"HOW?" Arya shouted pointing at the screen in a crazed manner. Her mother quickly shushed her even though her reaction was completely understandable. That should not have been possible.
"Well, they are not exactly alive so how do you expect them to die from that?" Tyrion asked the young girl.
Cut to Tormund continuing to hold the gate. The gate starts creaking then comes down. Tormund runs to the boat.
The giant starts roaring as the other gate comes down, swinging a fiery log. Jon, Tormund, and Edd sprint towards the boat with the giant clearing a path for them with the log. The Night's King continues to watch them from the top of the cliff.
Jon's siblings, cousins really, but they don't know that yet, were all nervously watching the screen. They thought that watching him fight that ice monster was terrifying, but it couldn't compare to watching him run from a giant horde of dead people who were trying to probably eat him alive or something.
EXT. HARDHOME – SHORE Jon, Tormund, and the Crow jump off the dock onto the boat. "Go! Go! Go!"
There was a collective sigh of relief heard throughout the room. At least it was over now. There was no way the dead could chase them through the water once they got off the shore.
"Wun Wun, to the sea." Tormund tells the giant. The giant stays back, continuing to take out loads of wights by swinging his flaming log. He begins to walk towards the boat, ripping the wights hanging onto him off of his back and throwing them into the water to die.
"Let's go now! Now!" Jon looks back to shore to see the Wights, along with a White Walker, killing the last surviving wildlings.
Tormund closed his eyes in resignation. "I told you it would be a massacre." The statement was directed at Jon, but the room was so quiet everyone could hear them.
Jon put a hand on the wildling man's shoulder. "That's why we're here, watching this. It's so that we can prevent this from ever happening." Tormund nodded back, filled with determination. Once they got back to Westeros they would stop the Others. No matter the cost.
Slowly, a figure walks to the end of the dock. The camera pans up to reveal the Night's King. He stares at Jon and Jon stares back. The Night's King turns his head to the carnage at the edge of the shore and then looks back to Jon. He slowly starts raising his arms.
"What is he doing?" Davos asked no one in particular.
"I don't know. Never seen any of the dead do something like that." Tormund said. He'd never even seen a Walker up close. And this was not just a regular Walker, this was definitely their leader. The king of the Walker's perhaps.
"Maybe he's proclaiming victory?" Margaery sounded very hesitant. "It's obvious the Others are intelligent, at least to some degree." They had to agree with her there. While the wights were dead, mindless creatures the Others were most certainly not. The shocked expression on the Walker's face when Jon Snow's sword didn't shatter was proof of that. Maybe the leader was simply raising his hands in victory.
"It's almost as if he's taunting me." Jon said and once again everyone agreed with him. It was as if the, what they assumed to be the leader of the Walkers, was showing Jon that no matter what, humanity would never win. And any attempted defense would simply be destroyed like Hardhome.
"Well, I'll be damned. Life-long enemies, people who hate each other's guts, all agreeing on so many different things today." Tyrion said with a fake smile. He chuckled. "The world must be ending." His mask fell and was replaced with a frown. "Oh, wait it actually is." And he went back to drinking his wine.
The dead wildlings twitch, then open their eyes to reveal blue. Karsii comes back to life, blue-eyed.
"So that's how they raise the dead." Sam said with wide eyes. All he had to do was raise his hands and the army of the dead got bigger.
They all start standing up, joining the army of the dead, and staring at Jon. Jon can do nothing but stare back at the Night King as the boat drifts away.
Everyone stared at the screen the same way Jon stared at the Night King. Full of despair, hopelessness and doubt. Doubt that the wights could be defeated.
Chapter 4: Chapter 4 Jon's Death
Chapter Text
A/N
Quick question. Am I putting in enough reactions from the characters? Because I feel like there isn't enough. Should I do more? Less? Or keep it how it is?
Now I planned on adding more characters when I was writing chapter 3, but I already had it mostly finished and didn't want to rewrite it. Those characters will be added once I release chapter 5. Chapters 1-4 will be rewritten slightly.
Due to the fact that I'm going to rewrite the first 4 chapters and that chapter 5 is going to be a lot longer don't expect the next update to happen anytime soon.
Also I'm going to have to start prepping for my exams in June. I'll try to update as soon as possible, but it will take a while.
No one really knew what to say after witnessing the massacre at Hardhome so they waited in silence for the screen to keep playing.
JON
Jon had been having strange dreams of being Ghost for years. Ever since he had gotten him in fact. The Wildlings or the freefolk as they liked to call themselves, called it warging or skinchanging.
"So you're a skinchanger?" Tormund asked. There was a glint in his eye. So that's why the direwolf, Ghost, was so unnerving. Not only was it an intelligent beast, but it also had a connection with Jon. Now Tormund wasn't a warg so he had no idea how any of that actually worked, but the animals the skinchangers warg into are a lot smarter than most.
"I guess." Jon shrugged. Maybe he was one of these wargs, whatever they were. That would explain his dreams of Ghost and his connection with the direwolf. But if that was the case then why did he feel the same connection with the dragon on screen as he did with Ghost?
"What is a warg or a skinchanger?" Edmure asked the question they all wanted the answer to.
"I think it's a northern legend about changing into animals or something." One of the Vale lords said. Truth be told the only ones who were aware of what wargs are were the northern lords. And there were only some that knew, most had simply forgotten or dismissed it as a myth.
"That's ridiculous. There is no way in the seven hells that this is true. How are any of you even believing this?" Cersei said with a scowl. These were just legends made up by those filthy barbarians in the north.
Arianne raised a brow with a blank expression. "And yet every single thing we had thought had gone extinct or was just a myth has come true." Cersei fumed in her seat. She would have that damn dornish slut killed.
"Great. More magic." Tywin grumbled to himself. The world was changing so much so fast and he had no idea how anything worked anymore. Even the bloody wildlings knew more than he did now.
They had the ability of entering the minds of animals and controlling them. Most were scared of the wargs and skinchangers but some thought it a blessing from the old gods. Jon would dream of hunting stags and other game at night and in the morning, he would see Ghost with a bloody muzzle. Then he knew it wasn't a dream. All the stories that old nan and the Free folk told him of people entering the skin of animals were real.
Most of the audience felt apprehensive of Jon now. And that direwolf was a lot more terrifying now. How would they even know if it was the wolf looking at them or if Jon was observing them through its eyes?
Howland, while slightly weirded out, thought this was great. If Jon could do this with his direwolf then it stood to reason he could do it with the dragons as well. It would certainly make the people much more accepting of dragons returning if the new king had such control over them.
Catelyn knew bastards were horrible, especially her husband's bastard. But this? He wasn't just a bastard, he was a monster. She was sure the bastard would use that wolf of his or some other animal to kill her children. It would have been a nice coincidence that all the Starks were killed by some wild animal and only the bastard survived. And now that fool Robert wanted to legitimize him?! Was he really that blind? How could no one else see that Jon would use this to take over Winterfell?
Ned had no idea what to think anymore. Not only was Jon the true King, he now had a valyrian steel sword, but he also had or would have dragons, he had killed an Other and on top of all of that he was a warg? One of the things old nan had been telling his children stories about. The world truly was going mad now.
The Stark children were jealous of their half-brother. They wanted to be able to have that connection with their wolves too. Or maybe they did and simply didn't know it yet.
All his life he had been a curious lad. He had loved to read and tried to read all the books in the great library at Winterfell before it had been burned to the ground after he had left for the wall. Jon had succeeded and thanks to his incredible memory he could remember all he had read. So to no surprise to himself he had to try out the connection he had with his direwolf.
"Oh, come on." Everyone looked toward Tyrion who had an annoyed and dismayed look on his face. "Why did the second biggest library in all of Westeros have to be burned down? Who does that?"
"What's it to ya?" The sellsword keeping the imp company asked. From the short time Bronn had to get to know the imp of Casterly Rock, he figured out he liked reading books, especially the ones about dragons.
"Winterfell's library has some very unique books about the Valyrians and their dragons that cannot be found anywhere else in Westeros. Those books are the only reason I was even going north before we all got here." Tyrion shook his head with a sigh. Well, at least he could still piss off of the Wall so the trip wasn't a complete waste of time.
"Jon could tell you about them, my lord." Sansa spoke up. "He read all of those books already and he remembers them all." Her half-brother was very good at remembering the things he learned. Sansa didn't hate Jon, he was always kind to her. She could see her mother frown at her for complimenting Jon. She didn't pay it any attention though, to her knowledge her mother had always hated him without any good reason. She should be directing everything at her husband, not Jon. He had no choice in any of this.
"I might have to take you up on that offer then. Perhaps once we get a break from this watching the future thing?" Jon nodded, accepting the half-man's request.
It had been hard going at first but when he had gone undercover beyond the Wall he had gotten better and better at controlling this strange gift.
But not long after he had started on the Great ranging, he had started getting other dreams. Even stranger than his wolf dreams.
"What could possibly be stranger than that?" Jaime asked before the answer showed up on the screen.
He didn't know what they were at first but soon he realized that he was dreaming he was a dragon.
For certain people, something just clicked once they heard that sentence. It would certainly explain a lot of things, but there was just no way, right? Jon seemed like a good lad, not to mention all the things they just learned about him. They would keep their mouths shut to make sure Robert wouldn't figure it out until they found a way to guarantee Jon's safety. For some reason, everyone seemed to forget about the invisible wall separating Jon from everyone else.
"Is his mother perhaps a Targaryen, Lord Stark?" Prince Oberyn asked cheekily. What he was really trying to do was distract Robert and those still loyal to him from figuring out Jon's father. As long as they believed Eddard Stark was the father then the only Targaryen woman who could have given birth at the time was queen Rhaella. And even the Usurper knew that wouldn't be possible.
"The only Targaryen woman who could have given birth at the time was Rhaella Targaryen and she was busy giving birth to Daenerys Targaryen." Tyrion said having caught on to what the Red Viper was doing. Tyrion had to protect his source of information about the books in Winterfell. And gaining some favors with the future king couldn't hurt either. Tyrion was sure Jon Snow was actually Jon Targaryen. He had to be. There was a Targaryen in the north and Jon could apparently warg into a dragon, that couldn't be a coincidence. And the honorable Ned Stark fathering a bastard? Not to mention the Targaryen themed chairs around Jon. Tyrion may hate a good portion of his family, but they were still his family. So while he held no love for his father or Cersei, he hoped Jaime would come to his senses and not get himself killed by siding against Jon.
"The imp speaks the truth. His mother couldn't have been a Targaryen." Robert said. Even if there had been any other Targaryen women at the time he would not believe that Ned would have had a son with any of them. Not after what the damn dragonspawn had done to Lyanna. The lad probably just had some Targaryen ancestry. Hell, Robert's own grandmother was a Targaryen. If a little Targaryen blood didn't turn him mad then Jon would be fine as well.
"There are no mentions of Targaryen's or any dragonriders having this warg ability. And I have read almost every single book about the dragonriders of Old Valyria and the Targaryens. This is simply a coincidence." Tyrion added. This was actually true, there are no records of any dragonriders having this ability.
"We also heard the dragon's thoughts and it never mentioned anything about warging or having some sort of connection." Varys said. He had to admit, Ned Stark had even him fooled. Now he just had to figure out what to do with the 2 or 3 other Targaryens, depending if Aegon was actually still alive.
Jon was disappointed. He had hoped this conversation would at least give him a hint about who his mother was, but Lord Stark was silently staring at the screen. He did send curious glances in Prince Oberyn's and Lord Tyrion's direction though, but Jon had no idea what that was about.
He had been sure for a long time that he was finally losing his mind.
Then he had heard that Daenerys Targaryen, the last Targaryen, had hatched three dragon eggs and birthed dragons back into the world. That had been when Jon realized that he was warging into one of them.
Those in the know were really starting to get nervous now. Robert may keep fooling himself and believe that Lyanna was kidnapped and that Jon was Ned's son, but even he would eventually figure it out and accept it. That will not be a pretty day. Now while that was not something they were looking forward to, Robert wasn't that big of a threat. The real threat was the old lion Tywin. Getting him on their side was not an option. As much as the old man hates Robert he would do anything to keep his daughter as the queen.
Jaime stared at the bastard of Winterfell in a new light. Could he actually be a Targaryen? But that made no sense. Unless… he was Rhaegar's son. Jaime's eyes widened. Of course! Lyanna Stark disappears with Rhaegar and is not seen for about a year, and Ned Stark goes to rescue her and comes back with a bastard child. The only thing that did not make sense was Ned coming back with a bastard unless the child was not actually his, but rather Rhaegar's and Lyanna's. It made perfect sense!
He shared a look with Barristan who seemed to be thinking along the same lines as Jaime. They discreetly nodded at each other. Was this breaking their oath? Yes. Would their honor be stained? Absolutely, but Jaime lived long enough to learn that honor was useless and only helped to get you and others killed. He learned that when he had to decide if he would let thousands of innocents die by keeping his oath or save them by killing a madman and breaking that oath. Jaime thought what he did was more honorable than what Selmy would have done at that moment. Barristan would have most likely stood aside and let them all die. All because of some damn honor. And did they really have a choice? Their only chance to beat the Others was those dragons and Robert would never agree to fight alongside a Targaryen, even if the end of the world was at stake. That was probably the only reason Selmy was going along with this.
Jaime would not fuck up this time. Not even if it cost him Cersei. For some weird reason, he felt odd about his sister ever since they came to this place. It definitely wasn't because the author was trying to speed up the process of turning Jaime to the good side and away from Cersei, no definitely not.
Jon had learned the name of the dragon he was warging into, his name was Rhaegal, Daenerys had named him after her brother Rhaegar who had sparked Robert´s rebellion by taking Lyanna Stark and died at the Green Fork.
Most people made a face at that. The war didn't start because of Lyanna and Rhaegar. No one would have gone to war because of a woman. It started when the Warden of the North and his oldest son were killed and most lords simply wanted to get rid of the Mad King anyway. But having a noble reason to start bloodshed was always a good excuse so they went with the kidnapping being the reason for starting the war.
The people who knew about Jon found that very interesting. The son of Rhaegar was warging into the dragon named after Rhaegar by Jon's aunt, therefore Rhaegar's sister, Daenerys. Wasn't life just full of funny little coincides?
When Jon had realized he was warging into the dragon, he had gone to maester Aemon and tried to ask him questions about dragons and the Dragonlords of old Valyria without giving anything away. He did not want the old maester to think Jon was losing his mind.
Regrettably maester Aemon didn't know anything about the subject of dragons and their riders that Jon hadn't read in the library of Winterfell.
Though after Jon and Aemon had spent a lot of time talking about dragons and related topics, they had formed a close bond. Jon had come to look at the old Targaryen maester as an uncle.
If only you knew, Ned thought to himself. Maester Aemon was actually Jon's great-great uncle. Even though Jon had no idea they were really related it seemed some things were just meant to be.
So, when he returned from Hardhome after rescuing the last of the Free folk he had been devastated to learn that the maester had died of old age.
Jon felt some grief. He may not know maester Aemon yet, but his future self obviously cared a lot for the old Targaryen maester. Jon had to wonder what Aemon had felt when his family was killed in the Rebellion.
His best friend and sworn brother Sam Tarly had dragged Jon with him to go though the maester's things.
Sam was shocked. The son of a high Lord actually didn't despise him for being fat and craven? Maybe it had something to do with being a bastard. Bastards weren't well-liked by most either. He was also a little bit sad. Not surprised, but sad. His father did end up sending him to the wall. Well, at least it wouldn't be that bad, not if he had Jon on his side.
"Ah, fuck it." He muttered under his breath before marching over to Jon's side of the room. If the southern lords would never accept him for being fat and a coward who would rather read books than fight then maybe he should just go to the people who would. And right now that was Jon. It was blatantly obvious this future was about Jon so maybe Sam could help him and achieve something meaningful in his life.
Everyone stared at Sam once they saw him get up and walk over to Jon. Sam was expecting to hit the invisible wall, as was everyone else, but he never did. Before he knew it he was in front of one of the chairs that were next to Jon. "May I?" He asked, a bit of uncertainty returning to him.
Jon and Tormund shared a look. "I don't see why not." Jon said. Ghost didn't even bat an eye at Sam and whoever Ghost trusted, Jon trusted as well. Sam did not strike Jon as someone who would ever pick up a sword, but he was smart. He proved that when he revealed just how big the army of the dead might be. He would be very helpful as a maester and maesters were always needed.
"If King Crow and his beast trust you, I'll trust ya too lad. Now sit down, I want to keep watching." Tormund said and turned his attention back to the screen. The lad was smart as far as Tormund could tell. Not much of a fighter, no definitely not, but smart people were important too. He also remembered the mysterious voice telling them the invisible wall would disappear for certain people. Tormund may be of the FreeFolk, but he wasn't an idiot. That wall would not open for an enemy.
And that was where Jon was now, sitting on the floor of maester Aemon´s quarters and looking through his things and trying to sort though everything.
"We have been at this for hours Sam. Perhaps it is time to take a break and get some dinner and go to sleep." He had not had any rest since he had come from Hardhome. Sam had whisked him straight away to the maester´s chambers.
Jon and Tormund and even Ghost turned to stare at their new ally. "I think you should let King Crow get some rest after that battle lad." Tormund told the new member of their small group.
Sam fidgeted nervously. "Well, don't look at me! I haven't done this yet, future me has!" They nodded, yeah that made sense. They shouldn't blame Sam for his future actions.
"We are almost done, just look in the chest under the bed and then go and get some rest."
"I thought I was the Lord Commander." Jon responded with a tired grin but did as Sam asked.
This time Sam rolled his eyes. It was actually nice to have a friend for once.
Jon stood up and walked to the bed and got on his knees and looked under the bed. There in the far corner was a long chest. It took him sometime to actually reach the chest even though he was tall and long limbed. The chest was heavy, but he managed to drag it from under the bed.
"How did you know of this chest Sam?" Jon´s eyebrows were drawn together in a frown.
"hummm… oh uh well maester Aemon told me to give this chest to you when he died. He said that you would most likely be in need of them." Sam answers with a shrug.
"'In need of them'? What does that even mean?" Brynden said aloud what they were all thinking. Just what could the old maester have given to Jon Snow. Maybe something to fight the Others?
"I doubt whatever some old maester will give him has any importance." One of the followers of R'hllor said to the other followers. They didn't agree. For some strange reason this seemed very important. When they saw Jon and the Night King facing each other it felt like destiny. As if it was meant to be. There was something strange about Jon Snow that they just couldn't figure out.
Those who knew about Jon were thinking that maybe, just maybe Aemon Targaryen found out about Jon's true parents. How he would have done that they had no idea. What he would give to Jon they also had no idea. But for some reason, they all had a weird sense of dread.
Jon stared at Sam with a frown painted on this face. What could maester Aemon possibly wanted to give him.
He opened the chest slowly and peaked inside. He sat on his knees and stared, this could not be possible. How could Aemon have hid this here at the wall for so long and no one was the wiser.
"What is it? What did maester Aemon leave you?" Sam asked after a little while. When Jon did not answer Sam stood up and looked in the chest. He stood there silent beside Jon for some time opening and closing his mouth like a landed fish for a good five minutes.
"Well, whatever is in there must be crazy for the lads to look like that." Bronn was… hesitant. Jon had seen, fought, and killed dead men and a fucking Other. What could possibly shock someone after all of that?
Jon wondered what the old maester could have given him. Aemon said he would be in need of them. But what or who was 'them'? Jon could not imagine that anything the maester gave him would help him against the army of the dead.
"Where did maester Aemon get four dragon eggs and a Valyrian steel sword?" Sam finally managed to croak out. "And not just any Valyrian steel sword either, that is Darksister if I am not horribly mistaken."
"Not important you say?" A follower of the lord of light asked the other.
"Well, fuck what I said!" The followers of R'hllor were now sure that Jon Snow was actually a Targaryen. Given his encounter with the Others, the followers of the lord of light were now convinced Jon Targaryen was the prince that was promised. Well, except for Melisandre, but she would soon see the truth.
Not a single person did not stare at the screen in shock. Jon Snow, the bastard of Winterfell, just received four dragon eggs and Darksister. How the fuck did anyone even begin to make sense of that?
"Of course! Of course, he gets dragon eggs! How could this possibly get any more ridiculous?" Tywin said in exasperation. Jon Snow had Targaryen ancestry, now that Tywin was sure of. There was no other way to explain this, it couldn't be a simple coincidence, not anymore. He wondered if that fool Robert would realize it.
Jaime and Barristan shared another look. Yeah, Jon was definitely a Targaryen.
"SEVEN HELLS! This is great!" Robert's shout made everyone stare at him now. "Now we won't need the help of the northern dragonspawn! The lad can just use his dragons to kill the Others!" Again Robert remembered that his grandmother was also a Targaryen. So while Jon's mother had Targaryen blood, and therefore Jon did as well, the lad had turned out to be a good man.
Those who knew about Jon just facepalmed. They didn't even try to hide it, there was no point. This guy was completely oblivious to what was going on around him. That's probably why the Lannisters were able to get so much influence.
Again Jaime and Barristan stared at each other. Jaime mouthed 'How in the f-'. Barristan just shrugged, he had no idea how Robert could be this oblivious. Or maybe he wasn't oblivious and it was simply denial. Denial that Eddard Stark could have betrayed him. Who knew what went on in that brain of his?
Jon's eyes were as wide as dinner plates and Sam looked to be having a heart attack. Okay, if Jon could hatch the eggs then they would be a massive help against the dead. But there haven't been any dragons in decades, except for the ones Daenerys hatched. How was Jon even supposed to hatch them? Could he even do that?
Ned and Howland honestly wanted to laugh. Not only would Jon soon get two grown dragons, but he would also get four more dragon eggs and one of the ancestral swords of House Targaryen. Maester Aemon definitely knew who Jon was, he had to.
"Brynden "the Bloodraven" Rivers came with maester Aemon to the Wall, and he had Darksister at the time. He must have left it here with maester Aemon when he left beyond the Wall."
"Yes of course, and this is the Butterwell egg. Brynden Rivers must have taken it with him and left it with maester Aemon." Sam picked up the egg that was red with golden flecks and black whorls. "They are very pretty, but I wonder why he would give them to you."
"Maybe maester Ameon knew about the Others?" Podrick guessed. "Dragons would help to defeat them."
"Yes, but how do you know he's going to hatch those eggs? As far as we know only Targaryens can do that and even then all the Tragaryens who tried it in the last 150 years failed, with the exception of Daenerys of course." Tyrion said. By now it was only a matter of time till they found out who Jon really was. Though Tyrion was curious if Jon could actually hatch dragons.
"Ever since I got back to Castle Black he and I have been talking about dragons and everything related to them." Jon wondered if he could tell Sam about his dreams. They sounded crazy even to him, how could he expect anyone else to believe that he, Jon Snow the bastard of Winterfell to be warging into the dragon that Daenerys Targaryen had hatched on another continent.
"And because of that he decided to give you four dragon eggs and his family´s ancestral sword?" Of course Sam saw through that awful excuse. "I´m not stupid Jon." Sam was getting irate.
Olenna chuckled. Looks like Sam eventually grew a backbone. Maybe once they got back he wouldn't be forced to take the black. He could overthrow his father. Gods know Olenna did not have the patience to deal with Randyll.
"I know you are not stupid Sam, I´m sorry. I don't know why he gave them to me, to be honest." Jon bit his lip and knew he had to tell Sam the secret that had been gnawing at him for years now. "What I am about to tell you… You can't tell anyone, do you understand?"
Sam nodded. He looked like Jon was about to confess to a murder. "I have been having these dreams… well not dreams exactly… it is hard to explain."
Jon walked to the bed and sat down. "You should sit down Sam. This is going to sound crazy."
"I don't think you being a warg would sound crazier than getting dragon eggs and Darksister." Sam said. Yes, the whole looking through an animal's eyes was crazy, but the whole eggs and Darksister thing was just downright insane.
"I hope your future self thinks the same." Jon really hoped so. Sam and he were apparently best friends in the future. That wasn't exactly something he wanted to give up.
"More crazy than an old man giving you four dragon eggs and his ancestral sword instead of sending them to his only living kin?"
"Yes…"
"Alright…"
"You know of warging right… the thing that some of the Freefolk can do. You know control animals and seeing with their eyes?" Sam nodded looking skeptical and a little bit worried.
Some shuddered. It was still weird to think that whenever that direwolf was watching them, it could actually be Jon who was watching them. As if reading their thoughts the direwolf turned towards them. They all hastily turned back to the screen and tried to ignore those piercing red eyes.
"Well I can do that too, I have been doing that with Ghost since I got him and that is how I can control him like I do." Sam nodded again and seemed to realize something.
"Is that how all the raven and horses are so calm when you are near? They know you are a… warg?" Now it was Jon´s turn to look puzzled. The ravens and the horses were calm in his presence? How come he never noticed that?
"Well, that's... nice. Not as useful as taking control of the direwolf or that dragon, but still good." Gendry said mostly to himself. Then again there aren't many things that are better than controlling an actual fucking dragon.
"I don't know, maybe but I have never noticed that other animals besides Ghost being calm in my presence." Jon shook his head and refocused. "But that is not the point. Ever since we left on the ranging beyond the Wall I have been having different warging dreams than the dreams with Ghost, I am someone or something else." Sam said nothing and waited for Jon to continue explaining.
"I think I am warging into one of Daenerys Targaryen´s dragons." Jon couldn't meet Sam´s eyes. He didn't want to see the horror in his eyes when he realized that Jon had lost his mind.
"I mean, yeah. It really does sound like you lost your mind lad." One of the northern lords said. Everyone else had to agree. What Jon was saying sounded like a madman's tale.
"I can not blame you for that, my lord. I wouldn't have believed myself either." Jon replied. No one in their right mind would believe something this absurd.
After a few minutes of silence Jon gathered the courage to look his friend in the eye. Sam was once again doing a remarkable impression of a fish. Maybe he should not have sprung the news on him.
"I think you broke him King Crow." Tormund said with a laugh.
"I know it´s sounds crazy and you don't believe me but I swear to you I am not lying or making this up." And still the silence stretched on. Jon was realized that he had made a huge mistake, and now because of his desire to confide in someone about him warg into the dragon, he was losing a friend.
Jon stood up abruptly. "Nevermind Sam, forget I said anything." He tried to walk out the door, but Sam stopped him.
"I believe you Jon." Jon turned slow towards Sam with disbelieve written all over his face. "I mean you are right, it sounds completely mental, but you have never been exactly normal." He said with a nervous laugh.
Jon gave Sam a confused and slightly hurt look. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, I don't know. A direwolf, dragons, Darksister, warging. You can fight really well, but you're also very smart." He was about to keep going, but Jon stopped him.
"Alright, alright, you made your point." Jon had to admit Sam was right. Most of the thing that happened to him were not normal.
"And if anyone is going to warg into a dragon on the other side of the world, it is you" Jon just stared at his friend. "And to be honest it kind of explains why you always know all the news of Daenerys Targaryen before the rest of us and in such a great detail. And I have never known you to lie about anything."
Honesty was a good thing, but if Jon was to be king he would have to learn how to lie. Then again maybe he could lie and simply never lied to his friends, like Sam for example. Or maybe he lied so well that not even his closest friend noticed. Tyrion would have to see more of the future to judge how good of a liar Jon could be.
Jon had never been more grateful for having Sam as a friend than in that moment. He could feel tears start to build up in his eyes, he refused to let them fall and willed them away. "Thank you, Sam." He could hardly speak because of the lump in his throat.
Sam was touched. He could hardly remember the last time someone was glad to know him. Maybe going to the wall wasn't the worst thing to happen to him.
Sam put the Butterwell back into the chest and closed it. "Here you should take the chest and get some rest." Sam could barely lift the chest so Jon walked towards him and took the chest from his arms. It was heavy but he could manage it well enough. Jon turned to leave the chamber, but Sam stopped him again.
"Jon, you know I will always believe you, no matter what. You could tell me that you are a grumpkin in a disguise and I would not doubt it for a second." Sam said with his impish smile. "Now that I think about it, you being a grumpkin makes a lot of sense."
"Hmm, are you a grumpkin?" Sam said with that same damn smile as his onscreen self.
"No? Yes? Maybe? I don't- How am I meant to know? Look at everything we have seen, I know nothing anymore." Jon said. What did he know anymore? What did any one of them know? This was the future and that was something no one could know.
Jon couldn't help but to laugh at the absurdity of the situation. He bid Sam goodnight and left for his own chambers to sleep for what felt for the first time in years with a lighter heart than before.
The Stark children smiled at that. It was good to know Jon would have friends once he left for the Wall.
A few days later, Jon was sitting at his desk in the solar of the Lord Commander. Sam had already left for the citadel with Gilly and little Sam, and Jon was taking a break from planning what to do with the abandoned castles of the Wall.
Jon and Tormund turned to Sam with large grins. "Little Sam, eh?" Tormund said with a laugh while Jon elbowed Sam in the ribs. Now Jon wasn't happy that Sam broke the Watch's vows, but he felt there was more to the story of this Gilly and little Sam. Not to mention the Sam who was with them wasn't actually a part of the watch yet.
"I-I'm sure t-that's not what that means." Sam said with a nervous chuckle.
Jon gave him a curious look. "What makes you say that?"
"I mean look at me." Sam pointed at himself. "I can't fight, I would rather read books, I'm fat and I'm a coward. What girl would want this?" He said with a dejected and ashamed look on his face.
"You'll never get one with that attitude." Tormund was sure that most if not all of the crows broke their vows. There was no way any of them would swear an oath that stopped them from fucking. No sane person would do that.
"I read a lot of books too you know?" Jon understood where Sam was coming from, but if Sam went to the wall then he surely learned how to fight at least a little bit. And the Wall was no place for cowards as far as Jon was aware.
"And that's where our similarities end." Sam deadpanned.
Jon sighed. "Well, if this future is anything to go by then it's clear this Gilly doesn't care about any of the things you mentioned." Sam was going to keep arguing, but the more he thought about it he realized Jon was right. This Gilly either didn't care about the things Sam mentioned or he changed in the future.
Benjen wasn't that bothered by Sam breaking his vows. Most of the Watch broke them at some point in their lives at the Wall.
Like most nights after he and Sam had found the dragon eggs and Darksister, he was starring at the eggs that lay in the chest. He had placed the chest by the fire so he could look at them in the evening. Jon could not explain why he had the overwhelming need to stare at the eggs for hours at a time. It was like they were calling to him, demanding his time and attention.
"Your friend was right King Crow. You are not normal."
Jon just gave Tormund a blank expression.
The eggs had turned to stone, but they glittered like jewels in the light of the fire. The egg that he and Sam guessed was the Butterwell egg, shone red with golden flecks with black whorls. That egg had been made famous for being the prize in a tourney many years ago when Aegon the fifth had been a child and a squire for Ser Duncan the Tall.
Maester Aemon had told him that he himself had been given the beautiful blue egg that was adorned with whorls of bronze. That egg had been laid in his cradle but obviously had never hatched. But maester Aemon had never shown Jon the egg, it was however unmistakably his.
The other eggs were not so easily identifiable. But he was sure that the egg that was silver colored with steaks of gold was the egg of Elaena Targaryen. One of Baelor the blessed´s sisters. Her egg had been famous for matching her silver hair that had been streaked with gold.
The last egg was pale green with swirls of silver that looked like molten rivers running all over the fossilized egg. There were a few candidates that came to mind but he couldn't be sure.
He didn't know how long he had been staring at the eggs, when the doors of his solar burst open with a bang, effectively pulling Jon out of his trance.
Olly stood in the doorway, panting and sweating. "What is it Olly?"
"Who do you think that is?" Ned asked his brother. This Olly was very young to be joining the watch. He definitely didn't end up there voluntarily.
"A steward perhaps?" Benjen suggested. If Jon was the lord commander then he would have to get a steward eventually.
"You have to come outside Lord Commander, there is a ranger that came from beyond the Wall. He says he has news of your uncle Benjen!" Jon stood abruptly from his chair and raced down the stairs with Olly on his heels. In the courtyard some of the sworn brothers had gathered in a circle, effectively blocking someone from view.
Benjen grinned. So he was still alive in the future then. He had wondered why he wasn't at Hardhome with Jon. He was the first ranger, he should have been there. Unless he went on a ranging that took longer than expected.
"Over here Lord Commander!" One of his brothers called.
Jon pushed through the wall of men only to find no ranger returning from beyond the Wall but a sign.
The smile from Benjen's face vanished. "Why would they lie about me just to show you something?" He had completely forgotten that he was most likely dead in the future. Or at least missing.
A cold chill ran down his spine, and for a moment he could not comprehend the situation.
TRAITOR
That was the only thing that was written on the sign, and it was written in blood red paint.
It was so quiet in the room you could hear a pin drop. 'Traitor?' Ned's eyes widened. "The wildlings." He said quietly, but everyone else still heard him. They all came to the same conclusion as lord Stark. The Night's Watch had branded Jon Snow as a traitor for letting the wildlings through the Wall. Normally they would have done the same, but after witnessing the Others they changed their minds.
Everyone except for a select few people felt their stomachs drop. "Oh, fuck…" Bronn breathed out. The one thing every single person in the room agreed on was that this wouldn't end well for Jon.
Jon felt shivers go down his spine. Four years into the future he was going to be branded as a traitor for saving thousands of lives. It wasn't right. Were the brothers of the Watch so stuck in their ways that they would kill him? Couldn't they see that the Others were the real threat?
Tormund felt guilty. It wasn't something he was used to feeling. The King Crow had been declared a traitor and would most likely be killed for saving him and the rest of the Free Folk.
Then there was pain in his back. Jon turned around and stared wide eyed at the men surrounding him. Ser Alister Thorne, Bowen Marsh, Wick Wittlestick and Olly. They were the men closest to him. Jon could barely breathe from the pain in his back and he looked down and saw that Ser Alister was holding a bloody knife in his hand. He had stabbed him in the back.
Jon felt a jolt of pain and watched in horror as his future self got stabbed in the back. It was almost as if he could actually feel the pain his future self was experiencing. For some reason, everything around him seemed to go blurry and the only thing he could see clearly was the screen. He could see the outline of someone on his right telling him something, but he couldn't hear, all he heard was a strange ringing sound. Also, why was it so hard to breathe all of a sudden?
"King Crow?" Tormund shot Jon a worried look. He couldn't believe what was happening on screen. Tormund could not even begin to imagine what Jon must have been thinking, but whatever it was, it wasn't good. What worried him, even more, was that Jon wasn't responding to anything he was saying.
Sam stared at the screen in horror. His friend was being murdered in cold blood. And by his brothers from the Watch! They were killing their Lord Commander, this was treason! He glanced at Jon and saw him staring wide-eyed at the screen. If Sam couldn't believe what just happened then what was Jon going through? Not only was he watching his future death, but he didn't even die fighting the Others or a different enemy. He was stabbed in the back.
The Stark children all froze. Tears filled their eyes as they shouted out Jon's name in panic. Their mother was trying to calm them down, but it was of no use. Their brother was being murdered and all they wanted to do was run over to the Jon who was in the audience with them. But alas they couldn't, because of that damn invisible wall separating them. All they could do for now was cry as their mother held them. They saw their father run over to the wall separating Jon from the rest of the people.
Now Catelyn did not and would never care about the bastard, but seeing her children so distraught made her feel just a little guilty. She wanted him gone but she didn't want her children to have to watch as he died. She wasn't that cruel.
Benjen felt sick. Jon's brothers, no, they weren't Jon's brothers yet. Benjen's brothers had betrayed their Lord Commander and stabbed him in the back. "I'm going to kill every single one of those fuckers." Rage was slowly overtaking him and he went to join his real brother in his attempt to take down the wall separating them and Jon.
Howland could not believe it. His dear friend's son and the rightful King of the Seven Kingdoms was being killed right in front of his eyes. Jon had survived fighting dead men, a White Walker, and who knows how many other things, only to die at the hands of his sworn brothers. He wanted to go and help the Stark brothers tear down that wall in his anger, but he knew he couldn't. It would draw unnecessary attention and it could make the wrong people suspicious.
Again Ser Alister thrust his knife in Jon, but this time it was in the belly. Jon staggered but did not fall.
Again he felt the pain where the knife was thrust. He could hear people shouting all around him, but all he could do was stare at the screen. And he still couldn't breathe for some reason. It was at this point he could feel someone lightly shaking his shoulder.
"Gods dammit! Let me through this fucking wall!" Ned shouted as he pounded on the invisible barrier. The person who brought them here stayed silent. His future self should have never let Jon take the back. He failed Lyanna and now the only thing he had left of her was gone. Betrayed by those who were meant to be most loyal to him. He could see Jon struggling to breathe and started hitting the wall faster. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Benjen join him in trying to take down the wall.
Another knife pierced him, this time it was Bowen Marsh who had stabbed him. Bowen was crying and muttered "For the Watch."
More pain flared up in his belly. He still couldn't fucking breathe. The person shaking his shoulder seemed to be getting more desperate to snap Jon out of whatever was happening to him.
"King Crow! Breathe Jon!" Tormund shouted to no avail. He would have asked Sam for help, but he was too nervous and jumpy right now. Out of nowhere the direwolf pushed him back slightly and laid down on his master's legs. Not knowing what else to do Tormund let Ghost try to get the King Crow out of whatever was happening to him.
"Why?" was all Jon could manage to get out of his mouth that wasn't blood.
"Why indeed." Tyrion reached for the wine under his seat once more, as did a lot of others. What was probably their only chance at defeating or at least holding back the White Walker threat was gone. He was tempted to laugh at the insanity of it all. They get to watch the future to learn of the Others and how to defeat them, only to be forced to watch as their only solution gets killed. Now, what would those two dragons do? Probably burn down the wall and kill everyone at Castle Black once they found out what happened to Jon. Looking over at the bastard he could see him struggling to breathe. He couldn't really blame him. Robert had found out he would die in the next few years, but he wasn't forced to watch his death. Not to mention Robert most likely just died in his sleep or something similar while Jon was betrayed.
"For the Watch" and a knife in the chest was the only replay he got as he fell to his knees in agony. His chest, belly and back were all on fire. It felt like someone had doused him in wildfire and the pain was unbearable.
Jon leaned forward as he wheezed for air. Why wasn't he able to breathe?! And why was there so much shouting? The shacking suddenly stopped and was replaced by something furry laying down on his knees. As if by instinct he grabbed onto whatever the furry thing on his knees was.
Sam could see that Jon's grip on Ghost was pretty hard. The direwolf didn't seem to mind though. Whatever pain he felt must have been overshadowed by the concern he felt for his master.
Then all he felt was cold and numb, he looked up at his murderers sluggishly. "Ghost…" Then Olly stepped forward and thrust a dagger right into his heart and the cold overtook him and everything turned black.
As soon as he heard his future self say the name of his faithful companion his vision cleared up and the ringing sound was fading out of existence. He saw that the furry thing on his knees was Ghost. He released a shuddering breath and loosened his grip on Ghost. The direwolf was staring at him with an expression of concern and… understanding?
The followers of R'hllor were stunned. Had they been wrong about Jon? No, they couldn't have been. That's the reason why they were seeing this. It's so they could stop the promised prince from dying at the hands of the Night's Watch.
The Starks rushed over to huddle around Jon. Ned and Benjen included. Rickon was trying to reach for Jon. Catelyn sighed and went over to the bastard. She supposed she could be a bit more… civil to the bastard. He did just watch himself get murdered after all.
"All right, everyone who's not a Stark, get out of here. You'll each find your room once you go through that door. We shall continue this tomorrow." The voice of whoever brought them here said as a door appeared on one of the walls completely out of nowhere.
Everyone left the room as Jon, the Starks, and their Direwolves stayed behind to try and comprehend what they had just witnessed.
Chapter 5: Chapter 5 A Much Needed Break
Chapter Text
A/N
So I decided not to rewrite the last few chapters. The new characters are going to be added in the next chapter. I'm lazy OK?
Oh and one more thing. Throughout this story, I will sometimes dedicate a chapter to show the characters moments from the show/books. Some of the things I will definitely show them are: The battle for Castle Black, Tyrion's trial and a lot of other scenes that involve White Walkers.
Out of the corner of his eye, he could see that by now everyone had left, even his two new friends, but Jon paid it no mind. All he could think about was that he would die in just 4 years' time. Before he could spiral back to his depressing thoughts he felt someone hug him.
"I don't want you to die Jon." Arya said as she sobbed into his shoulder. He slowly wrapped his arms around his little sister.
He wanted to tell her he wouldn't die, but after what they had just seen he knew he couldn't do that. "I can't promise you that." It came out as quiet as a whisper. The rest of his siblings joined Arya in the group hug.
The adults weren't sure what to say now that the anger and shock had subsided. What really could you say in this situation? Ask him if he was alright? Of course, he wasn't. Tell him they would make sure this didn't happen once they were sent back? The only thing the person that brought them here told them was that they would be shown their future. They were never told anything about going back and changing things. Well, they had to hope they could change things.
As Jon was being hugged by his family he couldn't help but tear up. It wasn't from sadness about his death, he really just felt numb, but rather from happiness. It felt good to know there were people who cared for him. Even Lady Stark stayed. He avoided eye contact with her though. She was only here because of her children, but that didn't really bother him. He'd gotten used to it a long time ago.
Ned and Benjen sat down on either side of Jon. Catelyn sat next to her husband. Ned put his hand on his nephew's shoulder. "You will not go join the Night's Watch. We'll make sure of that once we are sent back." Catelyn sighed quietly. She knew Ned was going to do this and she couldn't find it in herself to blame him.
"Your father is right, lad. You should have never gone to the Wall in the first place." Benjen added. No matter what happened he would make sure his nephew did not join the watch. At the very least this would dissuade Jon from even wanting to join.
Jon nodded. Joining the Night's Watch did not seem like a good idea anymore. But at the same time, what would happen at the Wall if he wasn't there? What would the consequences be if he stayed in Winterfell? Would they be bad or good? He became the Lord Commander so he had to have done something important or significant. And Jon had a feeling it had something to do with the Others.
"Let's just turn in for the night." Jon suggested. He could still feel the burning pain of being stabbed. It was almost as if he experienced the same pain his future self felt. Maybe that was a thing that happened in this place.
Everyone agreed with him. It would be easier to think about everything once they had some rest. However before they could all leave, Sansa asked one burning question. "So… you won't leave for the Wall?"
"I don't know." This was immediately met with protests from everyone.
"You can't leave! They will kill you!" Bran argued while Rickon shook his head and kept repeating the word 'no'.
"No, no no no. You are not going to that damn wall to die Jon!" Robb was not going to let his brother leave Winterfell. Not after what they had just seen.
"What do you mean you don't know?" Benjen asked. Just what was his nephew thinking? Surely he wouldn't want to go to the Wall if he knew he would die there.
"What about the FreeFolk? Are we meant to just let the Others kill them and turn them all into wights? And the dragon eggs and Darksister? Maester Aemon is not here with us. If we get sent back why would he believe us and just hand them over? What about Sam? He wouldn't have survived the Wall without my help that much I am sure of. And now he's going to the Citadel to become a maester! He might be able to convince them about the Others." Jon ranted and kept bringing up more good arguments for why he should go to the Watch.
Ned had to admit Jon was making a lot of good arguments, but his kids would never let go of Jon after what they had just seen. "We will decide on what to do later, but you will not die at the hands of those traitors. This is a discussion we can continue another time. After we see more of the future." He saw his children reluctantly nod. "Let's get some rest now."
They all went to their rooms. On their way, they could see certain others had gone to different rooms to have their own private conversations.
Jaime's right hand felt painful and just wrong for some reason. It actually felt similar to the pain described by those who have lost a limb. Why he would be experiencing that type of pain he had no idea. So he tried to distract himself from it by dragging Barristan to an empty room. "So… what's your reason?" Jaime asked with a slight smirk.
"My reason for what, exactly?" Barristan still hated the kingslayer and would not consider him an ally, but he had no choice, but to work with him on this. He had been surprised when the kingslayer wanted to talk to him in private. He was sure this would be about Jon Targaryen.
"Oh, I just want to know what could have convinced the ever so honorable Ser Barristan the Bold to betray his king and break his oath." Jaime asked in a mocking tone.
Barristan seemed to debate with himself if he should tell the kingslayer the truth or not. After a while, he caved in. "I saw something. It felt like… I don't know. A distant memory or one of these future visions perhaps."
"And what did you see in it?" Normally Jaime would have dismissed something as ridiculous as that, but he also had one of these memories Barristan is talking about. His was about Cersei blowing up the Sept of Baelor. He couldn't be sure it was real, but he couldn't prove it was fake either. After that, he only saw Aerys when he looked in her direction.
Barristan frowned and shot a glare at the Lannister. "I saw that little shit Joffrey dismiss me from the Kingsguard and name you the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. So as far as I'm concerned, I have been released from my vows already."
Jaime held back a wince. Yeah, his firstborn son was not exactly… king material. And Cersei certainly had a hand in dismissing Selmy. "That can't be the only reason." Being released from the Kingsguard was the reason for the betrayal, but there had to be something else to motivate Selmy.
Selmy sighed. "My greatest shame was failing Rhaegar and his family. If his son is still alive and I am meant to be dismissed then why should I not swear my fealty to him?" He asked the disgraced knight.
"And what if he turns out to be like his mad grandfather?" Jaime just had to ask. Aerys hadn't always been mad.
"After seeing and hearing what he does in the future, do you truly believe that could happen?" Jaime shook his head. "I would be honored to finally serve a good, worthy and just King." Barristan finished and left the room, leaving behind an intrigued Jaime. He wondered if anyone else also had these visions.
"So… what do ya think?" Bronn asked the imp as they sat at what seemed to be some sort of inn. At least he guessed it was an inn considering all the wine that was displayed on the wall.
Tyrion raised a brow at the sellsword as he poured two glasses of the wine which he grabbed from the display. "What do you mean what do I think? We just watched Jon… Snow get murdered. What am I supposed to say to that? Or anything else we saw?" He handed Bronn one of the glasses.
Bronn seemed to ignore Tyrion's words as he took the offered wine. "Seems to me things are going to get pretty chaotic in the next few years. Especially for little Lords like you. Might be a good idea to get some guards for yourself." He said before quickly downing his wine. After what he had seen he needed to get drunk.
"And where exactly could I find a loyal sellsword who is also great company?" Tyrion asked as he nursed his own glass. This wine was just as good as Arbor Gold if not better.
Bronn poured himself another glass. "Well, I don't know where you'll find one of those, but my services are available. For the right price of course."
"There goes the last Targaryen." Oberyn said dryly once he and his brother were alone. Their best shot at revenge. Gone. Just like that. Murdered by criminals who were sent to the Wall.
"We know Daenerys is still alive." Doran pointed out. Not that they would declare for her. Not after losing her dragons. After all those dragons were the only reason she had any power at all.
The Red Viper rolled his eyes. "And who's going to follow her? Especially after her own dragons abandoned her."
Doran ignored his brother's comment and moved on to more important matters. "We could try to convince Eddard to foster Jon at Sunspear instead of sending him to the Wall."
Oberyn glared at his brother. "You want to foster him? After Rhaegar set aside Elia?" Oberyn was willing to ally with Jon for the sake of getting revenge on the Lannisters and Baratheons, but to actually foster him?
Doran shot his brother an annoyed look. "You know as much as I do that Elia agreed to it. And we both know Rhaegar was not the only one who loved the Rose of Winterfell." Oberyn sighed and conceded that his brother was right. Silence settled as the two gathered their thoughts.
"It's rather poetic isn't it?" Doran said out of nowhere.
"What?"
"Ser Allister fought for the Targaryens during the rebellion. And now he killed his sworn prince's son. The last hope for the Targaryens to reclaim the throne." Both of them laughed at that. If only Allister knew the truth.
Jon Snow was a Targaryen. Olenna was sure of it. "Once we get back to Highgarden we will try to convince Eddard Stark to foster Jon Snow with us." Her declaration took her grandchildren by surprise.
"Why would we foster a bastard grandmother? I understand that he has four dragon eggs and Darksister, but he is still a bastard." Garlan wasn't sure just what his grandmother was getting at.
Olenna sighed. Her grandchildren were smart. Willas and Margaery especially, but they did not have the years Olenna had. And they hadn't heard all the rumors Olenna had heard during the rebellion.
"No, he is not." They looked at her in confusion. "During the rebellion, there were rumors Rhaegar had not kidnapped Lyanna Stark. And around a year after she went missing Eddard Stark comes back with her dead body and a child he proclaimed as his bastard. Eddard Stark, one of the most honorable men in the Seven Kingdoms, came back with a bastard."
"That does seem suspicious." Loras said and the rest of his siblings found themselves agreeing with that.
"And now there are two big fire-breathing dragons heading north to 'a land filled with cold and snow' where their rider is." Olenna continued as her grandchildren were finally figuring it out.
"And Jon Snow can coincidentally warg into one of those same dragons' mind." Margaery added and they all came to the same realization.
Willas' eyes widened. "He's Rhaegar Targaryen's son and the rightful King."
"Fostering him at Highgarden should give our dear Margaery enough time to charm him." Olenna smiled over at her granddaughter.
Margaery thought about it and it actually seemed like a good idea. Jon seemed like a good man from what she could tell, but controlling him would be either very hard or impossible. Unlike most, he was actually very smart. She would of course still try though. Maybe things would turn out alright.
"I only have four years left." Robert lamented. He was in a secluded room with his brothers. For some reason, Stannis decided to drag them in here to talk.
"So it would seem." Renly replied. He and his brothers were never close. Especially with Robert, but knowing he would die in the next few years still hurt. Close or not, they were family.
"Well, it's good you took up the duties of the king. Maybe you'll be able to turn that little shit into a somewhat decent king. Gods know I never could." Stannis was surprised by his brother's declaration. He shook his head, this wasn't why they were here right now.
"What are we going to do about those dragons?" Stannis asked his brothers, finally getting to the reason he dragged them into this room.
Robert waved of his brother's concerns. "Ah, I wouldn't worry about that. We'll just use the lad's dragons against the dragonspawn's dragons."
"Did it not occur to you that Jon Snow has Targaryen blood?" Stannis questioned both of his brothers. How did they not see the obvious?
Robert rolled his eyes. "Yes, I am aware of that Stannis. We also have Targaryen blood and it did not turn us mad, did it?"
Stannis suppressed a frustrated groan. "That is not what I am saying. The two dragons are going to Jon. He can apparently warg into their minds and they are moving towards him."
"But Jon Snow is not a Targaryen, he simply has some dragon blood in him." Renly said. Both Robert's and Renly's eyes widened once they finally got what Stannis was trying to tell them.
"There is no northern Targaryen! Those dragons are trying to find Jon Snow!" Stannis finally yelled. Now the three brothers had a lot to think about. Jon Snow would not have four dragons, but six of them.
"So…" Sam began. Tormund stared at him, face completely blank. "So?"
"What do we do now?" Sam asked his wildling companion.
"Why are you asking me, Crow? You're the smart one." It was clear to Sam that Tormund was frustrated, but he kept pushing.
"How do you feel abo-" Sam was abruptly cut off when the wildling's frustration finally boiled over.
Tormund couldn't take it anymore and exploded. "King Crow got killed because he saved my people! How the fuck do you think I feel about that?!" He sighed, shook his head in frustration and left the room. He needed to vent his frustrations on something or someone. Lucky for him there was a training area where that inn was.
He ignored the stares of the two people sitting and drinking the wine from the display as he hacked away at the wooden dummies. After a while the tall one offered to spar with him. Tormund accepted. It was better to vent his frustrations on someone who could actually fight back.
At some point, he joined them in getting drunk on the wine. He had to admit they were good company. Tormund hoped Bronn and Tyrion wouldn't become his enemies in these future visions.
"The boy's mother had Targaryen blood." Tywin knew Jon had Targaryen blood in him. It was an indisputable fact with all the evidence. Genna hummed in agreement.
"He might be able to control the dragons and hatch the eggs." Genna said. Tywin would never give up the throne, that much she knew. But how much would he be willing to sacrifice for it with the looming threat of the Others. "What if he tries to take the throne?"
The old lion scoffed. "He may have Targaryen blood, but he does not have the name. Even if he managed to take it, he wouldn't have it for long. The Lords of the Seven Kingdoms would never allow it." He himself would never allow it, but for now, they needed his dragons in order to fight the dead and for that, they needed him alive.
Jon was getting ready for bed. After everything that happened today, he was exhausted and just wanted to rest. As he tried to fall asleep he felt that weird feeling in his chest and back again. He sighed and finally checked what was causing that dull ache. He took off his shirt and froze. Scars. In the same places where his future self had been stabbed.
Jon sat up against the wall. He tried to wrap his mind around what this meant. Would everyone experience the same pain or at least get the scars they would receive in the future? Little did he know the scar on his back was still slightly bleeding. And some of that blood slid down the wall onto 4 dragon eggs, hidden underneath his bed. The eggs started to shake ever so slightly. It was safe to say sleep did not come easy to him that night.
Chapter 6: Chapter 6 Jon's Revival
Chapter Text
A/N
So due to the fact the next two chapters in Father Of Dragons are basically the same thing but from different POV's I took both and cut out the parts that were told twice just in different POV's.
I won't lie this chapter was hard to write. That's the main reason it took so long. I do not like how it turned out and it will 100% be rewritten at some point in the future.
As always constructive criticism and feedback is appreciated though I already know there is going to be a lot of it in this chapter.
Jon was woken up when he felt several things crawling on him and his bed. It felt almost as if cats were running around on top of him. His eyes shot open when he heard a shriek that was definitely not made by a cat.
What he saw made his eyes widen even more. Four dragons. Four small baby dragons were staring at him and… purring? Sometime during the commotion Ghost had woken up and was staring at the dragons the same way Jon was.
It was even stranger than the dreams he had last night. Something about proclaiming someone his Queen and not wanting 'it'. Whatever 'it' was he didn't know. Not that he cared at that moment. He had to figure out what to do with the dragons right now.
Everyone was gathered at the inn where Tyrion, Bronn and Tormund had spent the last night drinking. The only one missing was Jon. His siblings were all worried for him and wanted to go check up on him, but the person who brought them here assured them he would be joining them later.
The reason everyone was gathered there was because some new people showed up. And a lot of them were heavily disliked by almost everyone. Nah, scratch that, completely hated by everyone.
And who could blame them? No one liked Jon Connington, some random kid whom Connington fooled himself into believing was Aegon Targaryen, the Greyjoys, or the Boltons. Thank the Gods Daenerys and Viserys weren't here. That would have been a total shitshow.
There were some good additions though. Lord Commander Mormont would surely like to meet Jon after everything he had heard about him.
Varys almost grimaced as he observed 'Aegon'. This was not what he had planned. He was supposed to care about the smallfolk, at least Varys hoped that would be the case after sending him away to live among the smallfolk, but it was clear the boy was arrogant and just as bad as the Beggar King Viserys. Well, at least he had Jon Targaryen to put on the throne now so not all was lost.
They were all trying to find something to do while the most calm of them explained everything to the newcomers. Once the new guys were caught up with what was going on they all went to the viewing room and waited for their last member.
When Jon finally arrived everyone's eyes had widened in shock. There were four small dragons following him like lost children. As Jon walked to his seat Ghost was looking around and watching everyone like a hawk, ready to pounce if anyone even took a step towards Jon or his new dragons. Not that it was necessary, they were all too scared to even try and touch the dragons.
Once he finally got to his seat he noticed a new arrival. Instead of just his family, Sam and Tormund there was one more person. He was now joined by the current Lord Commander of the Watch Jeor Mormont.
Jon could feel someone staring daggers at him. Looking around he saw a young boy with silver hair glaring at him. That glare soon disappeared and he cowered once Jon's dragons shrieked at him. He also saw an older man staring at him in… wonder and awe? He dismissed that thought and sat down in his seat after making acquaintance with those who had joined him.
The four dragons had moved to sit on Jon's shoulders and lap while Ghost lay at his feet. After waiting for a while for the screen to finally start showing the future he noticed everyone was still staring at him in shock. "What?" His question finally broke them out of their stupor.
"Where in the seven hells did the dragons come from!?" Multiple people asked. How could he treat that so casually? Or did he just not care since he knew he was dead in the future?
"I found them once I woke up. Well, once they woke me up. I found their eggshells underneath my bed. They are the same as the ones Maester Aemon gave me in the future visions we saw." Once he was done explaining the screen turned on. The time for talk was over it seemed, though a lot of them still wanted to know more about the dragons.
Sansa´s road had been long and hard. She was so incredibly tired and hungry, but she did not want to stop. She was almost there. She was almost safe. She had to see him, the only family she knew the location of. She knew that even though she had been cold and mean to him as a child he wouldn't turn her away. That had never been him. Jon had always been so kind to her even when she was being a brat to him.
"I guess this part is about you then." Jon said with a smile. Yes, his sister was sometimes mean, but he could never hate her. And he certainly didn't hate any of his other siblings either.
"Yes, but I'm trying to find you and you're…" Sansa trailed off. Her statement brought back the somber atmosphere from yesterday. The reminder that Jon was already dead coupled with future Sansa's statement made everyone think about who else was dead.
Especially the Starks. If the only person Sansa knew where to find was Jon then where were all of them? Had they gone missing? Did they die as well? Their faces grim, the Starks kept watching. Just how much worse could this future really get? The two Tully men were also wondering and dreading what had happened to Catelyn and her family.
What happened to the North? Everyone else thought to themselves. Did the Starks get wiped out in a war? Had they been overthrown by one of the lesser houses sworn to house Stark? How could one of the oldest and most important bloodlines in Westeros just disappear like that?
The northern lords were all eyeing Roose Bolton and his bastard son with suspicion. They had an idea of who would want to get rid of the Starks. The Greatjon had to restrain himself from attacking the Lord of the Dreadfort… for now.
Meanwhile, Roose was celebrating on the inside. The Red Kings must have finally taken over the North and overthrown the Starks. All the years spent waiting for the right moment had finally paid off.
Robert was shocked. Not only was he dead, but his brother in all but blood had also died? Rage overtook the shock. Once he found out who killed Ned he would have them hanged for all to see.
Balon was very happy with this development. The damn Starks were gone and so was Robert. It was time for another rebellion. He was quite disappointed and furious when Theon looked shocked about the Starks' fate. The damn wolves had ruined his boy.
She could see Castle Black now. She had heard in Winterfell that he was now the Lord Commander of the Night´s Watch. She also knew that many of the North were angry at him for letting the wildlings through the wall.
The northern lords winced. Except for Roose of course. Their future selves would definitely want to murder Jon for that. They have seen and understood why Jon let them through, but their future selves hadn't. Not that it mattered anymore, Jon Snow had been killed by traitors in the Watch.
She knew that Ramsay would use that to try to get rid of Jon. He would say that Jon was going to let the Wildlings murder and rape as much as they wanted, and that Jon had to be killed to stop him. She could not let that happen, she had to save Jon.
The northern lords scowled. So it was the Boltons. They glanced at their Liege Lord and saw that he came to the same conclusion if the glare he discreetly sent Roose and his bastard was any indication. With any luck house Bolton would soon be put to the sword. No one in the North would miss those fuckers.
When they arrived at the gate of Castle Black, the castle was very quiet. It was like someone had died.
No one really found that amusing, Well, except for a certain few people. If you could actually call them that. Euron was definitely not human anymore.
Jon felt a pain in his chest and let out a shaky breath. The reminder that he had been, or would be, betrayed stung deeply.
Brienne and Podrick were surprised at their future selves being shown. At least they would still be alive in the next four years. That was a lot better than some others could claim.
"Well, come on." Brienne said as she stood up. Podrick stared at her confused. She sighed. "It's obvious we end up in the service of Lady Sansa. And you must become my squire in the future." Brienne wasn't sure about that last part, but she couldn't find another explanation as to why she would be dragging him along.
"What makes you think I become your squire, my lady?" Normally Podrick wouldn't believe her, but at this point, he didn't question anything anymore. This future was completely insane.
"Why else would I be dragging you along?" Without waiting for an answer she turned on her heel and went to join the Starks. Podrick just shrugged and went after her. What did he have to lose?
As Brienne and Podrick walked she took a closer look at the houses sitting closer to the Starks. It was an interesting development that started this morning. It seemed like two major groups had formed, though there was clearly some animosity between the members of those groups.
The most notable members of the group closer to the Starks were the Martells, Tyrells, the Lannister imp, the two Tully men, and the Northern Lords and Ladies. On the opposite side closer to King Robert were the rest of the Lannisters and the Baratheons as well as the two Kingsguard present.
She along with Podrick had been seated in the middle of the two with the rest of the audience. Though there were some exceptions. The old Lord of Griffin's Roost and the kid who claimed to be Rhaegar's son were seated separately from everyone else.
"Lord Stark, Lady Stark." Brienne bowed once she arrived. Podrick had followed her example and also bowed to the Starks. The heartbroken family greeted them and offered them two of the empty chairs. No more words were exchanged as everyone turned their attention back to the screen.
Brienne would wait and see if she had made the right decision. She would have rather sided with the Baratheons, specifically Renly, but it seemed the future had other plans for her. She had made her choice and if she were honest with herself, it felt like the right decision.
A black brother looked over the castle wall and asked who they were. Lady Brienne answered that they were travelers coming to talk with Lord Commander Snow. The man´s face fell, and he ordered the gate open. The courtyard was not only filled with sad looking black brothers, but they were greatly outnumbered by wildlings, who were also looking sorrowful.
"Well, there you are Edd." Jeor felt some comfort in seeing a familiar face. At least someone he knew was still alive. He wondered if his son was alive or gone in the future. He looked over at his son who was in the audience, maybe he could convince him to take the black to get back some of his honor.
They met the man in the other side of the wall. The man was thin with grey hair and looked very dour.
"You are looking for Lord Commander Jon Snow?" Brienne nodded. "Then I regret to inform you that the Lord Commander has passed."
Sansa felt her world shatter. Her last known family member was gone. She felt her insides turn to ice and a strangled sob tried to work its way up her throat.
The Stark family wasn't sure what to feel. They could not imagine that almost all of them would die in the next few years. With only Sansa left the Stark name would cease to exist entirely.
"This is my Lady Sansa of house Stark, the Lord Commander´s own sister." Brienne said. The man´s eyes widened.
"I am sorry for your loss my Lady. We are now preparing for his funeral. So, if you want to say your goodbyes, I can lead you to his chambers." Sansa nodded and dismounted her horse. Brienne and Podrick hurried after her as they followed the Night´s Watchman. They followed him to the Lord Commander´s solar. It was a small solar, smaller than she would guess, since it was the solar of the Lord Commanders.
There he was, her last brother. Theon had said that he had not killed Bran and Rickon, but for how long could they have survived the wilds of the North, when their older brothers didn't survive being surrounded with loyal men.
Proud. That was the only word to describe Balon Greyjoy right now. As it turned out his son was not useless. Looking to his left he saw the boy was conflicted. That was good, he could use this and take over Winterfell and by extension the North. If he acquired Stark hostages then securing independence for the Iron Islands would finally be within reach.
"Theon betrayed us?" Bran whispered. He couldn't believe it. They couldn't be sure that he had betrayed them, but why else would he claim to have killed the two youngest Starks?
Ned felt rage course through him. As did the rest of his family. Not only were they forced to learn about the demise of their family, but Theon had a part in it? Theon may have been a hostage, but they treated him well. Catelyn was about to get up and beat the shit out of the Greyjoy heir, but it seemed her husband had something else in mind for the traitor.
"Fucking squids!" Robert knew he should have finished off the Greyjoys when he had the chance. He had half a mind to go smash in their heads now. The King paled slightly when he saw his friend. He had only once seen him this angry and that was when he found out about the Targaryen children.
"Have we treated you unfairly Theon? Have I ever denied you hearth and home?" The glare on Stark's face made him resemble the old Kings of Winter. "We took you in as one of our own for fucks sake! And this is how you repay us?! By shoving the knife in our backs?!" His breathing ragged he waited for an answer from his, now former, ward. When he received none he sat back down, shaking his head in disappointment, and returned his attention to the screen. "Once we get out of this place you will stand trial for your crimes." He finished coldly. Everyone knew what that meant. Execution or the Wall, though given the extent of the Greyjoys' crimes even the honorable Lord Stark may deny him the Wall.
Jon was laying on a table, she could have thought he was sleeping if not for the holes in his black clothing, and the mournful whimpers of Ghost who was laying on the ground by the table. She walked slowly to Jon´s body as if not to disturb him. He was covered in blood, but that did not stop her from touching his cheek. He was cold to the touch and all she wanted to do was to shake him until he woke.
The Old Bear sighed. He wondered how he had died. Was he also betrayed like Jon Snow had been, was it the wildlings or maybe one of those undead cunts?
"Pardon me, my Lady." Sansa jumped at the melodious voice. She had been so distracted by Jon´s dead body that she did not see a young man sitting close by. "Are you Jon´s sister?" he asked.
Satin wasn't sure what was worse. Working at a brothel or being sent to the Night's Watch to spend the rest of his life there. Honestly, both were pretty terrible. Then again after working most of his life at a brothel a life of celibacy did not sound too bad.
Sansa nodded and tried to dry her tears, but more came instead. "How…" she had to ask, she had to know. "How did he die?"
The young man looked grim. "He was betrayed by some of the men who were not happy that Jon saved the wildlings at Hardhome. And then let them come through the wall. So, they lured him out and stabbed him. But Edd, one of the men loyal to Jon went to get the wildlings and we arrested the traitors and put them in the ice cells. We are going to execute them after the funeral."
Jon had been betrayed. Just like father, just like Robb, just like Bran and Rickon. Was it every Stark man's destiny to betrayed by the men they trusted?
All of the Starks and the Lords and Ladies loyal to them were looking around warily. It seemed that one sentence was enough to make everyone a potential enemy. They knew Theon and the Boltons were traitors, but who else had betrayed them? Just those two would not have been able to destroy the Starks by themselves.
Before she could replay someone walked into the room. Sansa had never met this woman before, but she knew her immediately by her the way she looked.
She was tall and beautiful, she had long red hair and was wearing a crimson gown that must not have been very warm and she had a red ruby fastened on a choker. Even her eyes were the color of red. She had heard many stories of Stannis´s red woman, and all her witchcraft, when she was stuck as a hostage in the Red keep.
Ned paled. Why was it that every time a Stark left the North and went to the capitol something terrible happened to them?
"I swear to the Gods that family has been forever cursed in the south." Tyrion mumbled to himself. No wonder they never wanted to leave the North.
'Sansa?! A hostage in the Red Keep?!' Catelyn's mind ran wild. How? Why? She definitely wouldn't send her daughter to the capitol now. Screw marrying the crown prince if this is how it turned out.
"You are not going to the capitol." Robb told his sister with a tone of finality. The rest of his siblings agreed with him, even Arya. The sisters may not be on the best of terms, but they were all part of the pack. The lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.
Sansa nodded at his words. Maybe... maybe marrying the crown prince wasn't such a good idea. She had been told Joffrey was good and just, but if he really was like her mother had described him then why did she end up as a hostage?
Robert gaped at the screen. He would never do something like that. A scowl quickly replaced his shocked expression. This had Joffrey written all over it. Damn that boy. Why couldn't Tommen be firstborn?
"Looks like not even you could reign in the little shit." Renly said to his older brother who shot him an annoyed look. As if there was actually anyone capable of doing that.
"Are you Melisandre of Asshai?" Sansa asked just to be sure. The woman nodded but she was looking at Jon. Had they known each other well? Where they lovers? At that thought she felt something crawl in her belly. She shook her head to clear her head of that thought.
No one could blame the girl for that. Everyone had heard of the red witch. Just the thought of meeting Melisandre was enough to get some people to shit themselves from fear. Who knew if she would decide to burn you or cast some sort of spell? She was from Asshai and nothing from that place was good.
Ned and Catelyn looked at Sansa strangely. Surely not. Even the idea of it was ridiculous. As far as Sansa and Jon knew they were brother and sister. 'They're not though are they?' A voice in Ned's head whispered.
Melisandre was confused. Why was she there with Jon Snow instead of Stannis? Could R'hllor have sent her to the Wall to help Jon Snow with defeating the Others?
Then three others entered the room. One of them was the night´s watchman from before, the dour one. The other two were not from the night´s watch. One was an older man who had a beard and was starting to lose his hair, and the other one was clearly a wildling. He was tall and had crazy red hair and a beard.
"Davos?" Stannis was surprised to see him at the Wall. Why would one of his most trusted vassals be at the Wall? When he asked Davos he seemed to think for a moment. He was not surprised Melisandre was there though. She went wherever her 'God' wanted her, at least that's what she always said.
"Perhaps I stayed behind with some men to help the Night's Watch in case of an attack from the Others ... my Lord." He wasn't really sure what to call Stannis anymore. In the future, he would be King and Davos would surely declare for him, but this Stannis was not a King yet so he would call him by his current title.
"Milady." Said the older man and nodded to her. Then he turned to the red woman. "Is there anything you can do for him?" This got Sansa´s undivided attention. Were they going to try some crazy spell to bring her brother back?
"I don't know Ser Davos." So, this was the famous Onion Knight. The man who had saved Stannis Baratheon at the siege of Storm´s End. "But I will try."
"Maybe she can bring you back?" Arya did not believe in fairy tales and songs as her sister did, but for once in her life she really hoped there was some truth to them. Jon pulled his sister close and hugged her. He couldn't stand seeing her give herself false hope that he could somehow return from the dead.
"What if he returns as a wight?" Euron Greyjoy spoke up for the first time since he was brought here. He was in an isolated area away from everyone else just like Connington and the Targaryen pretender. He grinned at Balon when he saw him glaring.
Actually, a lot of people were glaring at him. Not that Euron cared of course. He was not wrong after all, there was a chance Jon would return as a dead man unless his body was burned and everyone else knew that as well.
The Red woman walked over to Jon and beckoned the young man to help her. She asked the dour man to fetch water, then she and the young man started to undress Jon´s body. Sansa averted her eyes. Even though he was gone, she wanted to help preserve Jon´s modesty.
After some time, Sansa dared to look to see if they were done. They had finished undressing him and had put a small cover over his… male parts. What she saw shocked her. His chest and belly were covered in holes. Ugly stab wounds covered him and the cruelest one was over his heart like someone had stuck the knife in and twisted it. She could feel the tears start to build in her eyes.
People averted their eyes from the screen. It was not a pretty sight. The Starks were the polar opposite. They didn't seem to be able to tear their eyes from the screen.
Jon touched his chest. He had those same scars after yesterday's viewing. He still had no idea why. Was it a punishment? A reminder not to make the same mistakes again? Or perhaps a lesson to not be so trusting towards others in the future?
The nights watchman came back with the water, and the Red woman started her ritual. It was the longest minutes of Sansa´s life. She stood there and stared as the woman worked and chanted in another language.
But it was all for naught. The red priestess stopped, and Jon was still laying there, dead. She had long since stopped believing in fairytales and songs but a part of her had hoped that some god would take pity and return Jon to her. Everyone left the room, but her and the young man.
Some sighed in disappointment, others in relief.
"You actually thought it would work? Bringing someone back from the dead is impossible." Barristan questioned Jaime who was one of the people that hoped it would somehow work.
"Everything we have seen so far is impossible, what's one more impossibility?" Selmy didn't seem to have anything to say to that. Barristan did not like the idea of allying himself with him, that much Jaime knew. Selmy probably wouldn't forgive him even if he knew why Jaime killed Aerys. 'Not that it matters, he wouldn't believe me if I told him why I did it.'
"My Lady, we should prepare him for the funeral now." It was the young man again. She looked at him, but she could barely make him out from all the tears in her eyes wanting to come out.
"What is your name?" She asked. "Satin, I am… was the Lord Commander´s steward." He replayed quietly.
Satin's eyes widened in surprise. He became the Lord Commander's personal steward? He expected a position like that to go to someone of noble birth. Then again Jon Snow was a bastard so maybe he didn't care about Satin's own status. He took a peek at where the Starks sat and saw Jon look at him expectantly.
'Might as well. I have nothing to lose anyway.' He thought as he stood up and joined his future Lord Commander. After exchanging pleasantries and being scrutinized by all the direwolves and dragons he unknowingly became a part of Jon's inner circle. They didn't seem to realize it, but with all their animals the Starks looked terrifying. Jon especially.
"Satin, do you… do you mind leaving me alone with him, just for a little while?" Satin gave her a kind smile and nodded. "I will be back later with some clothes for him to wear."
Sansa nodded as Satin left. He had barely closed the door, when Sansa broke out in sobs. She closed the distance between her and Jon and buried her face into his chest and cried. She had come so far to reach him only to find him dead and gone. She had come looking for her last brother only to find out that someone had taken him away from her. Cruelly murdered him in cold blood.
Her good, kind Jon, who no matter how she had treated him growing up, had always given her a kind smile and a gentle word.
Almost everyone held sympathy for the girl. There were very few among them who had not lost loved ones for stupid reasons.
She didn't know how long she stayed there, crying into Jon´s chest, it could have been years for all she knew. But all too soon, Satin came back with the clothes that Jon would be dressed in.
She helped Satin as best she could, but she was to grief stricken to be of much help. She sat down into the chair by the lord commander ´s desk. That is when she saw something strange.
In a chest by the fireplace, there were four colorful stones. They were beautiful and the light of the flames reflected in the hard surface of the stones.
"I wonder what is going to happen with the eggs now?" Shireen asked. She had really hoped to see more dragons since the only ones that were shown so far were the two big ones and that was only for a short while. There were the four dragons that belonged to Jon Snow, but she couldn't see them from where she was.
"They could be sold to buy an army. They won't be of any use to the bastard anyway." Cersei suggested. There wasn't a way to hatch the eggs so selling them would be the best option. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see her brother eyeing her warily. She felt the frustration build, he had been avoiding her ever since they ended up here. He did not even visit her last night, which he could have as everyone had their own separate chambers.
"Cersei." Tywin shot his daughter a warning look. He could already hear the retort coming from Lady Olenna's sharp tongue. Why does his daughter have to be such a disappointment? Was it not enough that his heir was refusing to leave the Kingsguard and the only... son, he had left was Tyrion? The old lion knew he had to reign in his child or else her hubris would become her, or possibly even his, downfall.
Olenna scoffed at the Queen's suggestion. "Dragons would be more effective against the dead than any army could ever hope to be." She rolled her eyes, which along with her comment, angered Cersei even more. With that temper of hers, Olenna had no doubt Cersei would not last long in the game of thrones.
Oberyn smirked. "True, unlike the dragons no army is capable of recreating the infamous field of fire." Everyone shuddered at the implication of how much power Jon Snow could have wielded had he not been murdered. He could have destroyed entire armies on his own with just the dragons. And that was something certain players in the game of thrones did not even want to imagine.
"Where did Jon get these?" Sansa asked. Satin turned to her and shook his head. "I don't know my lady. One day they just where here when I was cleaning, and it is not my place to question the Lord Commander."
Silence fell over them while Satin continued his work, but when he was finished, he turned to her. He looked like he was troubled and wanted to say something.
"What is it?" Sansa finally asked.
"It´s just that… the eggs… well they had a weird hold on him." Sansa could see that it had been on the young man´s mind for some time. She nodded at him to go on. "Well ever since he got the eggs, it's like they were always on his mind you see. He was even dreaming about them. Once when I came to clean, he was talking in his sleep and he was saying over and over again, fire and blood and put them in the fire." Satin was quiet for a while but then he spoke again. "I was thinking that maybe we should put them on the pyre with him. I think that they meant much to him, and maybe that they should be with him when he goes."
Robert went stiff once he heard those three simple words. Fire and Blood. He wasn't much of an intellectual, but even he knew who those words belonged to. He saw his friend's bastard son in a new light now. Could the Targaryen madness have gotten to him? Maybe it was better he did not have dragons in the future. 'But the one in the room with you does have dragons.' His traitorous mind reminded him.
"He's catching on." Doran whispered to his brother. He was sure it would not be long now. Either the vision would show the truth or Stark would be forced to reveal it himself. Doran highly doubted Eddard would be able to come up with a convincing lie good enough to disprove all the evidence that had been presented to them.
Oberyn smirked when he saw Robert glance at Jon. "And it all comes crashing down." All hell would break loose once the truth finally came out after all these years. By now it was all but decided who would declare for Jon and who would oppose him.
Tywin narrowed his eyes in suspicion. Oh, the boy was a Targaryen for sure. The question was just how much of the dragon's blood he had in him. And what he would do once he found out about it. The Old Lion was no fool, the Lions did not concern themselves with the opinions of the sheep, but he also knew a Dragon would not concern himself with the opinion of the Lion.
Ned's breath hitched. He would have to tell Jon about his parentage. The future vision would show it that much was certain, but he owed it to Jon to deliver the news personally so that he would have some time to get accustomed to it. His family would have to know as well, but he will tell Jon first.
Sansa looked at the eggs. For some strange reason she agreed with Satin, if they had meant so much to Jon, they should be with him. It was a strange feeling that went against everything that Queen Cersei and Littlefinger had taught her. To burn four valuable dragon eggs instead of selling them to buy an army. They would have never allowed such folly, but she was not them and she didn't own the eggs. Jon did, and they should be with him.
Under normal circumstances, Catelyn would have been elated to hear that Sansa had been taught by the Queen and her childhood friend Petyr, but after hearing that her daughter had been a hostage in the red keep, it had lost its appeal. Her opinion of Cersei had gone down so low that she would go as far as to say she hated the Lannister more than Jon.
What she wasn't sure about though was Petyr. Just what had he done to be involved in this matter?
She nodded her consent. Nothing more was said and then the men who had left the room before came back. They were getting ready to move Jon. She hurried out of the room and meet Brienne and Podrick, who were waiting just outside. It had turned dark and the stars and the moon were shining bright.
"They are ready for the Lord Commander, my lady." Brienne said quietly. They went ahead to the courtyard where the pyre had been built and waited with the rest of the black brothers. No one seemed to pay much mind to Sansa and her companions, the night´s watchmen were grieving and didn't seem to care that two women had joined them in the courtyard. For the first time she noticed that among the Night´s watchmen and the wildling, there were also a few Baratheon men. They must have been the survivors from Stannis´s army, she thought to herself.
"So I am dead as well then?" Stannis seemed to accept his death a lot faster than everyone else had so far. He sighed. If he became King then the risk of death only got higher. 'I hope nothing terrible happened to Shireen.'
"It would seem so brother." Robert said somberly. He may have never been close with his brothers, but they were still family. Ever since they got here Robert had been regretting his past choices. The Targaryens may have been mad and destabilized the realm, but his own rule had definitely not helped. Would the future be any different if he actually took care of his kingdom rather than drink and whore his life away?
'Shit. Our bloodline is probably almost gone just like the Starks.' Renly thought to himself with a grimace. He definitely would not have any children himself, for obvious reasons. If Stannis died then his daughter was most likely dead as well. Renly also had a theory that Joffrey was overthrown and if what he thought was true then Tommen's and Myrcella's chances weren't great. It was the most logical thing in his mind. Cersei would have never allowed Stannis to be regent.
Then they came down with Jon´s body. He was carried on a wooden plank that had handles attached to it so the men could carry it easier. Satin followed after them with the eggs in his arms.
The men put Jon on the pyre and Satin put the eggs around him, then they stepped of the pyre. The dour faced man stepped forward with Satin. He was holding four torches and handed Satin one and then two other men Sansa had not seen before. They lit them up before the first man spoke. But Sansa had stopped paying attention. The only thing she saw was Jon´s body lying there.
Then she felt something large and warm move next to her. It was Ghost, Jon´s direwolf. She hadn't noticed before, her thoughts being consumed with the loss of her brother, but he was unbelievably big. He was the size of a small horse and she guessed if he let it, a small child could easily use him for a mount. He looked her in the eye and gave her a sad whine, she put her hand on his neck for support, to get through this she was going to need all she could get.
"Good boy, Ghost, good boy." Jon scratched his direwolf behind the ear. At least Ghost could offer Sansa some comfort after his death. He also noticed the absence of Lady, Sansa's own direwolf. He didn't voice his thoughts though. It wasn't the right time for that.
He could see his siblings hugging their own direwolfs. Or two direwolfs in Sansa's case. It made him remember he had more animals as well now. His dragons had all at some point climbed down into his lap.
She turned back to the pyre. They were now lighting it. She tried to hold it in, but she couldn't. It started out small, but the sobs grew and grew. It didn't take long until she stopped caring that there where people around. All she cared about was that she would never get to talk to Jon again, to ask him to forgive her of how she had treated him growing up, she would never get to reminisce of life in Winterfell with him, before they left.
"There is nothing to forgive Sansa." Jon held no ill will toward his half-sister. She didn't even hate Jon, she just tried to act how her mother does, and unfortunately, that involved scorning him. Though it felt good that she wanted to apologize to him.
She must have been standing there for some time, crying, sobbing and staring into the flames when it happened.
"What!? What happened?!" Someone shouted in frustration as the screen changed to show the dragons flying.
"Oh, the dragons. I had forgotten about those." Edmure said. A lot of them had forgotten about the bigger dragons with everything else going on.
He was flying though the night, he felt the chilly night air of the North, but the cold of the North was not enough to cool his rage. He had never felt this way before in his short life. Not even when his mother had betrayed him and his brother and locked them in the dark.
They had hurt his rider. No, they had killed him, and he would get his revenge. He would burn them all. He would rain such fire down upon them like never had been seen before and never would be seen again.
This was the final nail in the coffin. It confirmed for anyone who still had doubts about who the two dragons were trying to find. It made Fake Aegon (we're just gonna call him that from now on) grit his teeth. Why was the bastard getting dragons when he was the rightful king?!
The Northerners groaned in despair. "So our greatest weapon against the dead is what's going to let them get through the Wall?"
"This future just keeps getting worse and worse the more we watch."
"At least our demise will be a sight to behold, eh?" Bronn asked as he nudged his new drinking buddy.
Tyrion nodded. "That it will be Bronn, that it will be." Maybe someone who survives could write a book about it. If anyone survives that is.
He had felt fear for the first time in his life when the connection with his rider had gone out. A dragon was not meant to feel fear, but that had given away to the anger almost immediately, and he had resolved to fly over to the place that his rider was and lay waste to the ones that dared to hurt his rider.
He felt Viserion close behind him. His brother could feel his rage at the injustice of being so close to his rider and having someone snatch him away, when Rhaegal was so close to claiming him.
'So I'm Rhaegal's rider?' Jon thought to himself as his mind went to a darker place once more. 'At least I was supposed to be.'
But then he felt it, where before had been an ember, now there was a roaring dragonfire. His connection with his rider was back and it was stronger than before. His rider was alive again. He felt hope rekindle in his heart.
He had to find him quickly before someone could hurt him again.
"What?! Did the witch's spell actually work?!" Edmure cried out in surprise. Could his good-brother's bastard have risen from the dead? He couldn't have risen as a wight either since the Night's Watch burned his body.
Tywin rolled his eyes. Dragons were real. Fine. Legends and myths like giants and the Others were real. Alright. "Of course not. We saw them light his body on fire! He could not possibly survive that!" But Jon Snow was dead. Even if he had somehow survived the stabbing, there was no way he could possibly survive being burned. Not even the Targaryens were immune to fire.
The Starks prayed that Melisandre's spell had somehow worked while the Lords and Ladies continued to argue about what was happening. They didn't get to argue for long as the screen turned on once more ending the discussion.
Everything was dark all around him. Despite the soothing, warm darkness that he felt. He could feel rage and fear. Why was he so angry and afraid? It was warm, peaceful and tranquil here, why should he be angry?
And then with a loud crack, the world shattered. The peace was gone, never to return again. There was another crack heard close by and his eyes flew open. He could see smoke from a fire that seemed all around him, and turned the stars blood red.
The third crack was heard along with chirping. He could also hear someone crying. It was a loud sobbing of someone grieving a passing of a loved one.
At the fourth crack he realized that he was lying on a pyre. There was something crawling on him, several somethings in fact.
"He's alive." Varys whispered in disbelief. This was something he was not prepared for. He had been able to cope with the existence of the Others, dragons, and the fact the rightful heir managed to slip away undetected, but returning from the dead? How could the fragile human mind possibly comprehend something like that?
"He's alive?" Margaery questioned. Her grandmother too was struck speechless. That was a sight even more surprising than watching Jon rise from the dead. The Queen Of Thorns was not one to lose her bearings.
"I'm alive?" Jon asked as his dragons shrieked and Ghost howled. That should not have been possible. Not that he would complain, being alive was far better than death. Now his future self could continue the fight against the Others with the help of the dragons.
"He's alive!" Arya shouted with joy. The Stark children dropped their Direwolves in favor of hugging their brother who didn't die. Or at least didn't stay dead for long.
Ned and Benjen were gaping at the screen. He was alive. He shouldn't be, but he was. They both grasped Jon's shoulders to reassure him and themselves that he was fine.
Catelyn could not fathom what had just happened. The bastard had escaped death. Not even the Stranger could keep him. She sent a prayer to the Seven to give her strength.
"You're one tough bastard! Even death can't claim you!" Tormund laughed as he pulled Jon into a headlock. Sam and Satin were just silently staring at the screen in shock.
"Well, would you look at that?" Jaime shot a smug grin at a stunned Barristan. "Impossible and yet it still somehow fucking happened." Selmy could only nod dumbly.
Melisandre and the rest of R'hllor's followers stared in disbelief. They had truly found him. After all this time Azor Ahai reborn had finally come. It had to be him. The only thing missing was Lightbringer. In the back of her mind, Melisandre realized she had been wrong about Stannis, but that was something she could think about later.
"He's surrounded by fire!" "Why isn't he burning!?" "Is it not obvious? He's a demon that one!" "Demon? More like blessed by the Gods!" The Lords and Ladies continued their debate from earlier. They were far more hysterical now with some going as far as to say he was blessed by the Gods while others were claiming he was cursed or some kind of demon straight from the Seven Hells.
Tywin stared blankly at the screen for a few minutes just trying to process what happened. The bastard (though he had some doubts about that) had risen from the dead. This also meant he would be in possession of six dragons. He would have to carefully plan his next moves. The Martells and Tyrells supporting Jon was almost assured and if he was revealed as a true Targaryen it would be guaranteed. He would have to tread carefully now. It wouldn't be just the Iron Throne at stake, but rather his entire legacy if Cersei and Jaime didn't start thinking about their actions.
Bronze eyes looked at him as if to tell him it was time to get up and stop lying about. The eyes belonged to blue creature that could only be a very small dragon. Jon managed to sit up and the little blue dragon was now in his lap. The blue dragon had bronze colored horns crawled to his shoulder to make room for three other little dragons. One was a beautiful shimmering silver with golden horns, the third was red with golden horns and eyes, with a little hint of black amongst the red. The last one was a pale green with streaks of silver all over his body.
"It is you." Jon said looking at his dragons. They truly were the same ones his future self got. Did that mean he would soon see Rhaegal and Viserion? What if they were already here? Hidden somewhere in the shadows waiting to come out. Jon wasn't sure what he would do if those two appeared.
The four little dragons were crawling all over him and chirping and letting out small shrikes. He could hardly believe that he had a dragon on his shoulder and three other dragons in his lap. Jon looked around and saw fire all round him. But the fire wasn't burning him, it was comforting and warm. It seemed to lick his skin but strangely it didn't burn him. No, the fire was making him stronger than ever before.
It stirred a memory, not his own, but a memory that belonged to another. Then it hit him like a Morningstar. The memory belonged to Rhaegal, his very first memory, it was from when he and his brothers were hatched. They too had been hatched on a pyre when Daenerys Targaryen had burned the body of her husband.
Everyone slowly turned to look at Jon and his dragons. Loras hesitated for a moment. "Did you get burned alive in your sleep?" He asked anxious about the answer they would receive.
"No, I did not." Jon was quite sure he hadn't been burned. If he had then his bed should have been turned to ash and there would be scorch marks in his room. So no, he did not burn.
"Then how did the dragons hatch?" Edmure asked. If he hadn't burned then how did they hatch? Unless fire wasn't necessary.
"I do not know my Lord. All I know is that I…" He paused unsure if he should tell them or not. "I have the same wounds that my future self received." He heard the gasps from his family and some others in the audience. "They were still bleeding when I went to sleep." He was then abruptly pulled up out of his seat by his uncle while his father undid his shirt and examined the scars. The dragons screeched in protest at being thrown off Jon's lap, but no one paid them any attention.
Ned released a shuddering breath once he made sure the wounds were no longer bleeding or a danger to Jon. In fact, they were completely healed, they looked as if they had been there for years. "Why did you not tell me, Jon?" He may not have been able to save the Jon from the vision, but he would be damned if he let anything happen to his Jon.
Jon looked down, ashamed for having kept something like this a secret from his family. "I'm sorry father. I did not mean to worry you." Was the only thing he managed to say before he was pulled into a hug by his father, uncle, and siblings. Lady Stark awkwardly sat off to the side.
"So you technically did die. Perhaps dragon eggs require a sacrifice to hatch?" Tyrion guessed. If Jon hadn't been burned, but sustained his future wounds then surely that had something to do with the eggs hatching. So someone had to die to hatch them unless blood was enough. 'Jon did say the wounds were still bleeding yesterday.'
One of the outraged Lords shouted. "That's what you're concerned about?! What about the fact that we could receive the same wounds our future selves do?!" A good portion of the audience members were checking themselves over for injuries.
"Well, we know his Grace and the Starks die, but they're completely fine." Lord Reed said while pointing to the people he just mentioned. He was saddened by the knowledge of his friend's death, but maybe this would finally get him to tell Lyanna's son the truth. He deserved that much at least.
Jaime had a thought. Could the pain in his right hand be from a future injury? So far the pain came and went, but while they had been waiting for Jon to arrive this morning he had gone to train his swordsmanship. The pain in his right hand had been so bad that he actually started training while using his left hand out of boredom.
Barristan saw that something was bothering the Kingslayer. He had this look in his eyes. Almost as if he understood something that had been on his mind for a long time. "What's wrong?" He whispered so they wouldn't attract any unwanted attention.
"Nothing to worry about." Jaime's smug look wilted once he saw that Selmy clearly didn't believe him. "I'll tell you about it later." The old knight seemed to be content with that answer.
Then Jon realized the horrible truth. He wasn't angry or afraid, Rhaegal was, and he was coming here to avenge him, with fire and blood.
He had to move quickly, he had to stop Rhaegal from burning Castle Black to ash and everyone with it.
He just came back from the dead mere minutes ago. Somehow. And he's already taking charge once more. "Is he not even going to question how he's alive?" Willas asked his brother. Surely coming back to life had to be more shocking than dragons. Even for a man who could warg into a dragon on the other side of the world!
"I don't believe he is." Garlan said. Jon… Targaryen? was something else for sure. He cared more about others than himself if how easily he brushed aside his revival was any indication. It was admirable really, perhaps he would make a good king. Certainly better than Robert or his children could if the rumors about Joffrey were true.
He closed his eyes and for the first time he tried to consciously warg into Rhaegal. It was strange and different from Ghost but at the same time it was familiar and surprisingly easy, like the dragon was welcoming him. Jon managed to calm Rhaegal enough to get the dragons to hide an hour´s ride from Castle Black, but he had to assure Rhaegal that Jon would come to him very soon. He didn't want anyone to know he had two large dragons yet, the four small ones were shocking enough for now.
"Forget the bloody dragons! You just came back from the dead! And not as a wight either!" The Greatjon shouted. "You should be in disbelief, not trying to stop a fucking dragon like that's a normal thing to do!" He had to admit he was impressed with the bastard. It really was a shame he did not have the Stark name.
"With all due respect my Lord, I cannot allow Rhaegal and Viserion to burn down Castle Black while the Others are planning to attack. As the future Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, it will be my duty to put the needs of the Watch ahead of my own." For some reason, Jon had become wiser after his near-death experience. Near-death or just straight-up death? He technically did die. Who knew? Both worked.
Jeor was impressed. The brothers of the Watch had chosen the right successor. 'Only to later murder him.' It was a harsh reminder that no matter how many were loyal just a few had been enough to kill Snow.
He put the silver and golden dragon on his other shoulder and gathered the pale green one and the red and golden one in his arms and stood up. He had to get of this pyre, he looked around and saw to his right was a possible way down. But it was hard to see anything through the blazing inferno.
He spied a place that he could use to get down of the pyre. He took one step, and then another and another until he stumbled ungracefully out of the pyre. Jon looked around and saw fearful, grieve struck faces of his sworn brothers. Ser Davos was also here along with Stannis´s red witch and a handful of Baratheon men. Everyone was looking at him in fear and disbelieve. Jon looked at the group assembled in the courtyard.
Jon's face was completely red and buried in his hands. Yup, he was naked for everyone to see. "Death would be preferable to this." He muttered. Hopefully, everyone was still too preoccupied with his revival and his dragons to pay attention to his lack of clothing.
"How long until they notice?" Tormund asked with a smirk. The only reply he got was a glare and a mumbled 'hopefully never'.
Then he saw her, she had grown taller since he last saw her and even more beautiful. She was flanked by an incredibly tall woman with blonde hair, a young man with dark hair and Ghost.
"… Sansa?" He could only whisper. Jon tried to take another step towards her, but he fell on one knee in the snow, and that seemed to break the spell of shocked silence in the courtyard. While he knew the fire had made him stronger than before, he felt disoriented and a little lightheaded. Coming back from the dead was hard work, but the lightheadedness would wear off soon, that much he knew.
Then the red woman fell to her knees and started to loudly pray to her red god and the Baratheon men with her.
R'hllor's followers had started to pray to their god as well. Once they were granted another break they would have to look into the flames to confirm if Jon really was the promised prince.
But Sansa ran towards him, crying as she fell to her knees in front of him. She grasped his face with her hands and pulled him to her chest. Dragons and all.
"I thought you were dead, Jon." She sobbed into his curly, dark hair.
"Well, I was dead." Jon said with a forced grin. It was fine, he wasn't dead anymore so he could joke about it now.
The only thing he got for trying to lighten the mood was a hit to the back of his head courtesy of his brother. "Don't even joke about that Jon." Robb said while shooting his brother a glare, one that was mirrored by the rest of his siblings. It was obvious Jon's humor wasn't appreciated.
Before he could replay, something started to lick the side of his face that was not buried in Sansa´s clothes. Jon managed to look at Ghost, who was making soft whines.
Jon heard someone else approach them in a hurry. "My lady, we must get him inside. He will freeze out here." The voice belonged to a woman. It must have been the woman that had stood at Sansa´s side when Jon walked out of the fire.
It was only then that Sansa realized that all of Jon´s clothes were gone, if the speed of her pushing him away with a blush was anything to go by.
Both Jon and Sansa went red in the face. Jon also heard some quiet laughter from some of the Lords. Personally, he found nothing amusing about this situation. It was quite humiliating in his opinion. He could not even begin to guess what Lady Stark or his father were thinking.
Tormund leaned closer to Jon with a smirk on his face. "I think they noticed." He whispered before dodging the punch Jon had aimed at his face.
Ser Davos had come to Jon´s side and was trying to put a cloak around his shoulders but was having a hard time of it because of the dragons that were perched on them. Then Ser Davos decided to try to put the cloak under the dragons, much to their irritation. The silver one decided to climb on Jon´s head to get away from Ser Davos and his cloak, the silver one´s climb up his head was very painful for Jon as the little dragon pulled on his hair to get up, but the blue one was calmer and let Ser Davos put the cloak on Jon´s shoulders. But he never took his eyes of Ser Davos while he was doing it.
Meanwhile Tormund had appeared at Jon´s side and together with Ser Davos they helped Jon back to his chamber. The dragons were hissing and chirping all the way there. The silver dragon had decided that it was safe to come down to his shoulder again, much to Jon´s relief, and was chirping angerly in his ear.
They finally made it to Jon´s chambers and he was helped to sit on his bed. He put the little dragons on the bed beside him. Ghost could apparently not contain his curiosity anymore and paddled over to the dragons and started to sniff at them. They tried to snap at his snout, but Jon gave them a quick flick on the nose for their trouble. "No, don't threaten Ghost." He said to them and gave them an angry stare. To his surprise and everyone else´s in the room the dragons listened to him.
"They only just hatched and they already follow his commands as if they were trained dogs." Brynden said in disbelief. Even the Targaryens had trouble controlling their dragons yet here was Jon Snow, the bastard son of a Stark, ordering around four dragons.
Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Cat's children hounding Jon and asking him questions about the dragons that he himself probably didn't even know.
He looked at the people gather in his room. "Could I maybe get some clothes, and some cooked meat for the dragons?" He asked, his throat was filled with ash, he noticed, and his voice sounded unsurprisingly dry and raspy. Satin his steward jumped up to fetch him some clothes and Ser Davos hurried out of his room, presumably to get the meat he asked for.
Jon looked at Sansa and saw her blush go even deeper. "We will wait outside while you get changed." She said in a small voice and hurried out of the room. He couldn't help but to stare after her. He had never been so glad to see anyone before in his life.
But how was she here, all he knew of her fate was that she had disappeared from King´s Landing when Joffrey was murdered.
No sane person was surprised or saddened by those news. Hell even Robert did not seem to care about his son's imminent death. Rumors spread quickly and the ones about Joffrey had not been pleasant. It was obvious something was wrong with that child.
Cersei slowly processed the words that had appeared on the screen. The heartbreak came first, but that was quickly overtaken by the anger. And she knew exactly who to direct it at.
She jumped out of her seat with a crazed look in her eyes. "You did this! It was the Stark girl! She killed my poor defenseless Joffrey! She killed your future king! Seize her! Seize her!" She yelled, ordering the two kingsguard to apprehend Sansa, but neither moved. They only listened to commands from their king.
The Starks along with some of the Northern Lords and the Tullys glared at the queen. Sansa was scared. Having a person with authority, limited as it was since she was just the queen and not the king, yelling at you and accusing you of a crime was not fun.
"What a bitch." Arya muttered and for once even Catelyn agreed with her. She didn't even reprimand her daughter for her language.
"I doubt they would be able to get through all of us." Jon said while looking around at all the Northern Lords who would definitely jump in to protect any of the Starks if they were in danger.
"I don't think they will even try." Robb said while looking pointedly at the four dragons and seven direwolves growling, hissing, and baring their fangs at the queen.
The Martells watched the scene with barely concealed glee. Oh, how Tywin must be boiling on the inside right now.
Robert rolled his eyes. "Oh, shut up woman! What reason would the child have to kill Joffrey? How do you even know she did it?" He doubted Ned's eldest daughter could kill Joffrey. Arya probably could though.
"Why else would she run away from the Red Keep then?!" The mad woman continued ranting. It was clear she was beyond reason. Barristan actually put his hand on the hilt of his sword, just in case things turned ugly.
"The boys' crazy mother would be reason enough." Olenna quipped which managed to make Robert laugh while the crazy woman fumed. Cersei opened her mouth ready to continue with her rambling.
"Cersei sit down." Tywin realizing the situation was spiraling out of control coldly ordered his daughter to stop before she caused even more damage. Reluctantly his daughter sat down though from the look on her face it was clear this was far from over.
Jaime glanced at his sister and quickly turned his attention back to the screen once he saw her turning to look at him. He wondered if this was the first step that led her down the same path the Mad King had gone down.
His thoughts were interrupted by Satin handing him new clothes. He hurried putting them on as best he could, but every muscle in his body was stiff and it was like he had never used them before. When he was done dressing, he sat back down again. Satin let everyone back into his chambers.
Sansa stepped in first. Before he could stop himself, he had stood back up from his bed and closed the distance between them and hugged her. He noticed that even as tall as she was, he was a head taller than she was and he could comfortably bury his nose in her hair if he so chose. After a little while, he took a step back and held her at arm´s length, he gave her a small sad smile. "I thought you were dead."
Her ocean blue eyes were filled with unshed tears. "I thought you had died." She replayed.
"I did." She stared at him confused. "Then how…" Jon just shook his head, he had no answers to that question. "I don't know."
"Maybe it was the Gods?" Sansa suggested. It wasn't a bad guess and honestly, it was the most likely explanation. What else could allow someone to come back from the dead other than some higher power?
"Or the Witch's spell really did work!" Arya said. Her suggestion wasn't bad either though Jon doubted it was true. If the spell really had worked then why did it take him so long to come back to life? Shouldn't it have worked immediately?
Ned cut in before the argument could escalate. "That's enough. It doesn't matter how Jon is alive. As long as he is alive that's all that matters."
Before anything else could be said, Ser Davos entered Jon´s chamber and Jon was pulled out of the moment. He also noticed that Edd had come to join them and the room was staring to get a little crowded. He cleared his throat and accepted the dish filled with meat. "Thank you, Ser Davos." Jon turned to feed the dragons when a thought entered his head. "Who put the eggs on the pyre?" Jon asked and looked at the people in the room. Everyone looked at Satin and he had his answer. Jon raised his eyebrows and the question was clear even though no word was spoken. Why.
"Well after you got the eggs, you started to behave strangely, you started to talk in your sleep when I came in to your solar to clean and you were saying weird things." Jon continued to stare at him and saying nothing.
"It was really strange and you kind of frightened me, to be honest. You were talking about fire and blood, and how the eggs needed to be put in the fire. Yes, I know it is a strange leap to make, to put them on your funeral pyre, but it seemed the right thing to do. You seemed so concerned with them and I thought you wanted to have them with you when you were gone." Satin seemed really embarrassed.
"Well, whatever the reason I'm glad you put them on the pyre." Jon told his future squire. He was happy with the choice Satin made. It had resulted in him getting four dragons which could be used to fight the Others.
"Wait, why were you sleeping in your solar Jon?" Sansa stared at Jon with accusation written clearly on her face. Now it was Jon´s turn to be embarrassed. But when he looked at Sansa´s face he could not help but be transported back to his childhood. She looked exactly like her mother, well a more beautiful version of her, but the resemblance was uncanny. He cleared his throat and turned to his dragons and started to feed them. "We´ll talk about that later."
"Yes, we will Jon Snow."
He heard Tormund and Ser Davos snicker behind him, and he felt his face start to turn a nice crimson.
The Martell brothers stared at the two in amusement. "A union of Ice and Fire?" Doran asked his brother with a smile. A marriage between Jon and Sansa would grant Jon control of both the Riverlands and the Vale. Add the support from The Reach and Dorne and Jon would have five of the seven kingdoms behind him without any major battles. Not to mention the Lords of the Narrow Sea might declare for him as well. The only real opposition would come from the Lannisters and the Baratheons.
Oberyn smirked back. "They do say opposites attract." He wondered what Jon's cousins would do once they found out the truth. They would be confused for sure, but they would accept it. From their interactions so far it was clear they cared deeply about him even though they thought he was a bastard. There would probably be some resentment directed at Ned for keeping this secret from Jon and them.
"And where did you get the dragon egg´s?" Sansa asked after Tormund and Davos managed to get their laughter under control. That question had everyone listing with undivided attention.
"Maester Aemon left them for me, and before anyone asks, I don't know why." Sansa frowned but nodded.
Ser Davos cleared his throat. "We have all had a long day. Perhaps we should continue this on the morrow?" Sansa looked like she was about to protest, but the tall woman beside her intervened. "My lady, we just came to Castle Black and you have had a long and hard journey, you need rest."
Jon now noticed the clothes Sansa wore, they didn't look anything like a highborn lady would wear, no they looked more at home on a handmaiden or a servant than on a daughter of Eddard Stark. He couldn't help the frown that appeared on his face.
Ned and Catelyn had noticed that too. They both came to the conclusion that Sansa had to hide her identity when escaping from the Capitol back to the North. Just thinking about all the horrors their children would go through in the next few years made them sick. On top of that, they had no idea if Robb, Arya, Bran, and Rickon were even alive.
Sansa relented and gave a curt nod. Jon turned to Satin. "Satin, could you find them suitable chambers to stay in?" Satin nodded and hurried to follow his command. Sansa and her companions turned to follow him, but Jon stopped them. "Sansa, you umm… you should take Ghost with you." She looked like she was going to protest. "Please, Sansa I would feel better if you have him with you."
Sansa gave him a small smile and nodded, and Ghost followed her and her friends out the door. When everyone left, Jon sat on his bed again and slumped against the wall, besides his new dragons.
It was silent as the turned dark once more. The silence was interrupted by two extremely loud thuds that came from Jon's side of the room. To everyone's shock and horror, the two massive dragons from the future had landed not far from Jon. Rhaegal and Viserion had arrived.
The tension was so thick it could be cut with a knife. No one moved, said, or did anything for what felt like hours. Then the dragons spotted Jon. Rhaegal shrieked and ran towards his master and all hell broke loose.
Chapter 7: Chapter 7 The Truth
Chapter Text
A/N
Hello! I'm back again. I won't go into specifics about why I've been gone so long, you can find that info on my discord server. Before you read this chapter, I've got a few things to say about this fic. To put it simply, I hate the way I wrote certain parts of the earlier chapters. The way I wrote some characters is way too OOC, and I cringed when I read some of my previous chapters.
I'm also regretting putting in as many characters as I did. Because, to put it simply, I don't know every single damn Lord and Lady in Westeros. I have been thinking about getting rid of most of them, other than the more important Lords that actually show up in "Father of Dragons". Let me know your opinion on that.
Overall, this story is a mess, and I didn't have much of a plan when I started it. So, I will need to rewrite and change a lot of stuff. Because I quite often feel stuck. Sometimes I have characters that barely appear, talking just to remind myself they are in this story. It's safe to say this is a project that I was not prepared to write. I'm not a professional writer, okay? I just started this project because I couldn't find any good GoT reaction fics.
However, despite that, I will continue what I had planned for this story. At least for this chapter. I will put it up to a vote. Do you want me to rewrite this story completely, or continue what I have already written, and try to salvage it by rewriting certain sections and removing some of the unnecessary characters?
It was silent as the turned dark once more. The silence was interrupted by two extremely loud thuds that came from Jon's side of the room. To everyone's shock and horror, the two massive dragons from the future had landed not far from Jon. Rhaegal and Viserion had arrived.
The tension was so thick it could be cut with a knife. No one moved, said, or did anything for what felt like hours. Then the dragons spotted Jon. Rhaegal shrieked and ran towards his master, and all hell broke loose.
Everyone bolted out of their seats and backed away as far as they could. Swords were drawn, and as useless as they would be against a dragon, they made them feel a little safer.
Jon had taken a few steps back as well before steeling his nerves. He could do this. These were his future dragons, so why should he be afraid of them? Ghost and his four smaller dragons weren't afraid either. His siblings' direwolves were on guard, but didn't make any move to attack. 'I guess that means they are not a threat... to me at least.'
Rhaegal, seeing his rider back away, stopped his movements. Instead of running at him, he slowly made his way over to Jon to show him he wasn't a threat. For some reason, his rider looked smaller, younger than the one he remembered. There was no mistaking it though, this was his rider. He could feel it. He also felt the gaze of every person in the room, but he didn't care about them.
Having finally made up his mind, Jon started slowly moving towards the two dragons approaching him. They looked a lot bigger than when he had seen them on screen. Ghost and his younger dragons were coming along with him. He couldn't help the smile that broke out on his face. His companions were willing to go toe to toe with two massive dragons to protect him. It was a testament to how loyal they were.
Those closest to Jon held their breath as dragon and rider approached one another. Ned watched as they got within arm's reach. Jon reached out his hand and touched Rhaegal's snout. A deep rumbling sound reverberated throughout the room, and Ned realized the dragon was purring. How could a mythical creature known for destroying cities purr like a cat?
"Well, fuck me…" Tyrion breathed out. His wide eyes were raking over the dragons trying to remember every little detail about the magnificent beasts. The four smaller ones had been a sight to behold, but these two were truly awe-inspiring. He estimated that the green one was at least 30 foot long from head to tail.
Robert could only stare at the dragons in fright. These were not the same dragons he had seen ended roughly 16 years ago. No, these were real dragons, ones that could actually breathe fire and burn their enemies. This was a creature he couldn't smash to pieces with his warhammer if it ever went rogue. He'd already harbored some suspicions about the lad, but now he was sure there was more to Jon than Ned had told him. 'What if he is Rhaegar's spawn?' He didn't want to believe it, but he could no longer deny the possibility, not after seeing how the lad interacted with the beasts. His dear Lyanna had been with the damn Dragon Prince for a long time, so there was a chance he had raped and gotten her with child. He clenched his fists in frustration. 'We are going to have a long talk after this, Eddard.'
The Northern Lords looked upon the dragons with a mixture of fear and bitter memories, recalling the time when they fought against the Targaryens. They could only imagine how much worse the rebellion would have gone if the Mad King possessed dragons. Many Lords and Ladies from the other kingdoms shared those feelings.
Jon stared into Rhaegal's eyes. He felt a connection with the dragon, similar to the one he had with Ghost, but also completely different at the same time. Viserion, apparently wanting some attention as well, lightly nudged Jon, who rubbed his snout like he had Rhaegal's. His connection with Viserion didn't feel as strong as it did with Rhaegal, but it was still there.
"Well, time to meet the rest of the family." Jon really hoped his siblings wouldn't be scared of Rhaegal and Viserion, though he expected they would be. As Jon went back to his seat with all his animals in tow, he could see that the people had calmed down. Some were already returning to their seats, though they still did not take their eyes off the two giant fire breathing dragons.
As Jon got to his seat, he could see that his siblings were hesitant. He couldn't blame them for that. The dragons were quite intimidating. "It's alright. They won't hurt you." He said. Rhaegal and Viserion wouldn't hurt anyone unless they were a threat to him.
Robb wasn't sure what to do. Every instinct told him to run away as far as possible. These were dragons! Actual living dragons that could burn you until nothing but ash remained. His siblings were all thinking the same. However, this was his brother. He knew he could trust Jon. So he hesitantly made his way forward, but he was beaten to the punch by his wild little sister.
Arya was the first to rush forward to meet her brother's new dragons. The rest of the Starks followed, somewhat exasperated, of course Arya would be the one to throw caution to the wind and run up to a dragon. Ned wasn't too keen on having his children near the dragons, but there wasn't much he could do about it. His wife and youngest son stayed back, and he didn't blame her for it.
As Jon watched his siblings interact with his dragons he felt a heavy hand land on his right shoulder. He looked back to see his father staring at him with apprehension. "Jon, we need to talk." His father said in a grave voice.
However, before Jon could respond, their attention, along with everyone else's, was drawn to the ceiling. "Listen up, everybody! Due to me bringing the larger dragons here, I shall bestow upon you an hour long break to calm down from all of this excitement. Now begone! And do whatever it is you do during these breaks." Their host had announced.
The moment their host had finished talking, Robert stood up and started marching towards where the Starks were seated, intent on getting the truth out of his Warden of the North. Only to see him and the rest of his family all leaving through a door on the opposite side of the room.
BANG! "Fuck!" Robert cursed as he hit the invisible wall separating the two sides of the room. Looking back where the Starks left, he saw the two big dragons guarding the door. "Gods damn it all!" He cursed once more and stalked off angrily to go look for something to drink.
As everyone was exiting the viewing room to go their separate ways, Jaime noticed Barristan gesturing for him to follow.
Jon was ushered into the room by his father. It was empty, save for a few chairs. There were no windows either, the only source of light being a glass ball in the center of the ceiling.
His father had wanted to tell him everything while they were alone. His siblings and Lady Stark were waiting in the hallway. So here they sat across from each other, neither saying a word. Jon waited with bated breath. "This is it. I will finally find out who she is."
Ned took a deep breath. His hands were shaking. "This is it. No more lies." He said a silent prayer to the Gods. "There is no easy way to say this Jon. I am not your father."
Jon's brain came screeching to a stop. "What?" Surely that was not true. He had to have misheard. If Lord Stark was not his father, then who-
"Your mother was Lyanna Stark, my sister." Jon's breath hitched. After all this time, he finally knew who she was, and yet he couldn't feel relieved because if Lyanna Stark was his mother, then there was only one man who could be his father. "And your father was Rhaegar Targaryen."
Jon's mind churned with a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. Sorrow, betrayal, anger. However, there was one thing that took priority over everything else. "Am…" He swallowed harshly. "Am I a bastard born of rape?" He could barely whisper the words.
There was a moment of silence between them as the implications of that question set in. Ned's eyes widened as he rushed to reassure his nephew. "What? No! Gods no, Jon. Lyanna went willingly with Rhaegar." He shouldn't have been surprised that Jon thought about that. The story everyone was made to believe was that Rhaegar had kidnapped Lyanna. Then again, most who were around during the time of the rebellion are likely aware that the story was fabricated. It made the rebellion seem like a noble cause. However, the rebellion only started when Rickard and Brandon Stark were killed, and Jon Arryn refused to execute Ned and Robert. Instead, he had declared war on the Targaryens.
Jon nearly wept with relief. This was the best news he had received since they started watching the future. He thanked every god he knew of that he wasn't born of rape, that would have been worse than just being a bastard. He wanted to ask many questions, but Lord Stark wasn't finished yet.
"And you are not a bastard. Lyanna and Rhaegar married on the grounds that Elia could no longer have children." Which meant he had a claim to the iron throne, the strongest claim of anyone, in fact. "And your name is not Jon, that was the name I gave you to keep you hidden, but your true name is Aenar Targaryen."
Aenar Targaryen. The first Targaryen of Dragonstone. And yet he didn't feel like he was Aenar Targaryen. He never had the chance to become him because for his entire life, he thought he was nothing more than a bastard. The only stain on his father's, actually uncle's, honor. "Why did you never tell me?" Could Lord Stark not have told him the truth, so that at least behind closed doors, he wouldn't have to feel ashamed for simply being born?
Lord Stark sighed. He remembered the promise he'd made to his sister as she lay on her deathbed. "I promised Lyanna that I would protect you. I couldn't let anyone know about you."
Jon shook his head. That wasn't what he was asking. "No, I understand that. I am asking why you never told me the truth. Did you ever plan to tell me?" He hoped his uncle didn't plan to keep him in the dark forever.
"I was going to tell you everything once you joined the watch." Ned was aware Jon had wanted to join the watch. It certainly wasn't what he deserved, but it made the situation much easier to handle, and it would keep him safe.
"After?" It clicked instantly. "You thought I might try to claim the throne?" The very thought of that seemed outrageous to Jon. Where would he even find any support? He did not look like a Targaryen, had no proof of his birth, was barely a man grown, and much of the realm hated the Targaryens. Why should any Lords declare for him? He'd never even seen battle.
Ned was silent. The thought had passed his mind. Jon had aspirations to join the watch, but he thought he was a bastard. He couldn't be sure what Jon would do if he were aware he had a claim to the Iron Throne.
Now Jon was getting frustrated. All his life, he wanted to be a true Stark, so what made his uncle think he would try to use his claim to become king? "To what end? To avenge my father and mother, whom I never even met? Everyone who should have been my closest family died because of that bloody throne. What made you think I want anything to do with it?"
"I couldn't risk it Jon. If Robert or the Lannisters ever caught wind of it, they would kill you. The Starks would have been declared traitors to the crown, and all of us would become targets." Ned imagined his nephew's dead body next to Aegon and Rhaenys, along with Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran, and Rickon.
"I know that! Did you seriously believe I would risk the only family I have left?!" Jon was furious that his uncle would even consider that he would put his siblings, well cousins, at risk. They were all he had.
"No. I know you love your brothers and sisters. I'm sorry, Jon. I believed not telling anyone had been the best decision." Something he was coming to regret now. Along with allowing Jon to join the Watch.
"You still should have told me! They were my parents! I had a right to know who they were before I decided to waste the rest of my life away at the Night's Watch!" He was shouting now. He couldn't care less if his cousins heard everything.
"The Watch is an honorable order, and the Starks have manned it for centuries." The words sounded hollow as they left his mouth. That is what the order was supposed to be, but it wasn't. It hasn't been for a long time.
Jon scoffed. "Maybe it was an honorable order in the past, but today it is nothing more than a glorified penal colony made up almost entirely of criminals. They murdered me for doing the right thing. They knew of the Others, and still killed me for trying to save the wildlings!" He felt himself become short of breath, as if the walls of the room were trying to crush him, as he remembered the way he'd been murdered.
"And I'm not a Stark. I never truly was." Jon said as he headed for the door. He needed to get out of this room. Lest he say something he would regret.
"You are more Stark than Targaryen, Jon." Ned regretted saying that when he saw Jon's body stiffen, the tension in his frame betraying his inner turmoil.
Jon stopped in his tracks, but didn't turn around. "I never got to make that choice. Am I really a Stark? Or is that what you wanted me to be?" And left the room without looking back. He did not want to know the answer to that question. Or for his uncle to see the tears slowly making their way down his face.
Having managed to quietly slip away from the crowd, Jaime and Barristan once again found themselves in the same room where they had discussed Jon Targaryen.
"So? What do you have on your mind that's bothering you so much?" Barristan had been observing his fellow Kingsguard, and what he had seen worried him. Ever since they started seeing the future, Jaime often checked his right hand, though he made sure nobody saw this.
Jaime ran a hand through his hair as he exhaled. "You saw his scars." He said, referring to Jon's wounds. "They were the same wounds he received in the future. When I looked over at him, he seemed to be in pain, as if he felt like he was getting stabbed the same way his future self was."
"Go on." Barristan did not like what Jaime was alluding to. Him constantly checking his hand seemed far more ominous now.
"My right hand sometimes hurts." He didn't want to admit it, but he was worried about the implications of this. Especially after what happened to Jon.
"You believe it means something happens to it in the future."
"What else could it mean?"
They sat in silence that was eventually broken by Jaime. "How do we do this? Do we just go over to him and swear fealty?" "Would he even accept us?" went unsaid, but they were both thinking it. After all, they did serve the man who killed Jon's father, and Jaime had killed his grandfather as well.
"He might not know he is a Targaryen." Barristan suggested. Ned Stark did not seem like a man who would plot and play the game of thrones.
Jaime scoffed. "Stark is probably telling him right now so that he doesn't hate him when the future eventually reveals it." He doubted it would work, he'd kept the truth from him for all these years, so telling him now wouldn't lessen the feelings of betrayal.
"He allowed the prince to exile himself to the Wall." Barristan said angrily. Rhaegar's son, the heir to the throne, had been allowed to join an order made up of mostly criminals; murderers, rapists, and the like.
Jaime nodded, sharing some of Selmy's anger. "He did. And he allowed him to be treated like a bastard for all these years." At least he had it far better than most bastards, not that it made the situation any better. He could only wonder how the rest of Ned's family would react.
"What do you think father is talking to Jon about?" Sansa asked. She, along with her siblings, their mother, and their uncle Benjen, had been waiting outside the room her father and Jon had walked into for a while now. They had all heard Jon's raised voice, and she was getting worried about them.
"I don't know, maybe the dragons?" Bran guessed as he looked at the four small dragons, and Ghost, who were impatiently waiting for Jon to come out of the room he was in. He also remembered seeing the two big dragons stand guard at the entrance when they all went in.
Robb was about to reply when the door opened violently. Jon emerged looking more enraged than he'd ever seen him. And he looked like he was crying. That set of alarm bells in his head. Just what had his father told him?
"Jon!" Arya called out, but their brother rushed past them, ignoring their calls.
Sansa heard movement at the door and saw her father, guilt clear on his face. Bran and Arya immediately hounded him for answers.
"Why did Jon run away?" Bran asked. In the distance, he could still see Jon's dragons and direwolf running after him. His own direwolf, Summer, along with his siblings' direwolves were staring after where their brother had gone.
"And why was he crying?" Arya demanded. She had rarely seen Jon cry, so in her mind, something terrible must have happened.
"Come, there is something we need to talk about." Ned said as he led his family into the room.
However, nothing could have prepared them for what Ned Stark was about to reveal.
Jon was petting Ghost while around him, his four small dragons chased each other. They had caught up to him while he ran. He'd run without a destination in mind, he hadn't known where he was going, just that he needed to get away from Lord Stark. Eventually, he found himself at a dead end, in front of a door with his name carved on it, which is where he now found himself.
The room was big, lavish, with what looked like extremely expensive decorations. The polar opposite of his room at Winterfell. All in all, it looked like a room fit for a king. Not to mention that the carpet, bedsheets, and curtains had a red and black color scheme. "Which makes sense given what I've just found out." Unwillingly, his thoughts went back to the conversation he'd had with his uncle. He did regret what he said at the end. What he said wasn't wrong, but he still felt guilty about it.
"What am I supposed to do now?" He asked, the only answer being the chirps of his dragons. His real identity would certainly be revealed to all the Lords and Ladies of the Seven Kingdoms. Jon knew there would be some Lords willing to declare for him, though mainly because of the dragons, so would they even be truly loyal? The Lannisters and Robert would demand his uncle's head, perhaps even dispose of the Starks entirely. Jon wouldn't put it past Tywin to try that.
However, with his dragons he could keep his family and the North safe. "Or, I could jump on Rhaegal and leave Westeros altogether." He banished such thoughts immediately. He wouldn't leave his cousins to face the Lannisters and Baratheons alone, they hadn't known anything, they were innocent. Briefly, he wondered if Benjen knew, but surely he would have told him? At least Jon hoped he would have.
The Martells. Jon wasn't sure what to consider them. Would they declare for him for a chance at vengeance? Or would they despise him for the fact that his father chose to take another wife despite being married to Elia Martell? Regardless of what they chose, there likely wouldn't be any true loyalty to him from Dorne, only an alliance to make the Lannisters pay.
The North had lost a lot during the rebellion, so he doubted they would support him unless his uncle somehow convinced them to do so. The Riverlands and the Vale likely wouldn't support him either. The Vale would certainly support Robert over him due to Jon Arryn having been the hand of the king. And the Riverlands would be complicated, either choosing to side with the North or do the same as the Vale.
Then there was the Reach. Opportunists who now knew he had six dragons. They would certainly declare for him, for a price. "They might try to arrange a marriage between Margaery and me." It was no secret that the Tyrells wanted their blood on the throne. Jon let his head drop into his hands. "Ugh…" He groaned. "What a mess."
Jon paused his musings when he heard the door to his room open. He barely managed to look who it was before he was tackled in a hug from Arya. It seems his siblings, cousins really, had found him. Rickon was likely with Lady Catelyn since he wasn't here.
"Did he tell you?" Jon asked, though he already knew the answer.
"Aye, he did." Robb was anxious. He was dreading this conversation, he didn't want to lose his brother. Logically, he knew Jon wouldn't suddenly distance himself from them, just because he wasn't their sibling by blood, but the fear was still there.
"I don't care, you're still my brother." Arya tightened her grip around him, she was not going to let him go any time soon. She didn't even let go when one of Jon's dragons came to inspect who she was.
"You're not mad?" Jon asked, surprised. He had expected at least some resentment, since it was his grandfather that killed their grandfather and uncle, who were also his grandfather and uncle. Did that technically make Aerys a Kinslayer?
"We are a bit mad at father for keeping this from us, especially you." Robb wasn't a fool. He knew his father had kept it a secret to protect them, a point Jon would make himself, but Jon deserved to know the truth.
"He did it to keep you all safe from the Lannisters." Jon said. His relationship with his uncle may be strained if not completely destroyed. However, he did not want his cousins to ruin their relationships with their father for his sake.
"We know, but he had no right to keep it from you." Sansa could understand their father keeping it from them. However, keeping it from their mother was a mistake in her opinion. Jon would have felt far more welcome at Winterfell if their mother wasn't constantly worried that he would try to usurp them.
What Bran said next almost made Jon laugh out loud. "Mother slapped him after he told us the truth." It had been quite shocking for them, they'd never seen their mother do something like that.
Arya finally untangled herself from Jon to pet his dragons, who were now all demanding attention from them. "Uncle Benjen hit him too." She added with a smile. Benjen had punched her father in the face, he'd been furious that her father had let Jon join the Watch without telling him the truth. She felt her father had deserved it.
"So, we're still family?" Jon asked quietly.
For a moment, no one answered, and Jon felt his stomach twist in worry.
Arya rolled her eyes and hit his shoulder. "Yes, stupid."
Sansa nodded, though her expression was softer than usual. "Of course we are."
Robb stepped forward, placing a firm hand on Jon's shoulder. "The lone wolf dies…" he began.
Jon huffed out a weak laugh as the words came to him automatically. "…but the pack survives."
"And you're part of the pack." Bran added cheerfully. "Your dragons too."
Jon couldn't help but smile. Despite the fact that he was a Targaryen, they'd still accepted him.
After a moment of comfortable silence.
"Are you going to take the Iron Throne?" Bran asked. He believed that Jon should take back his birthright. It belonged to him and not King Robert.
Jon sighed. "I may not have a choice in that matter." Regardless of how he felt about his uncle, he had kept him safe for all these years and given him a better life than most bastards ever would have gotten. He wouldn't let the Lannisters and Baratheons take his head.
"What do you mean?" Sansa was worried about what would happen once everyone learned of Jon. She hoped the dragons would be enough to keep them all safe.
"The Lannisters and Baratheons won't let me live, even if I take the black. The Lannisters will likely try to frame the Starks as traitors. And there will be those who declare for me regardless of what I want." Jon had accepted his fate. If taking the Iron Throne was the only way to keep his family safe, then he would do it.
"The North is with you brother. You know that, right?" Robb tried to reassure his brother. He hoped that when the time came, his father would choose to support Jon.
"The North isn't exactly fond of the Targaryens, Robb." Jon doubted that all the Northern Lords and Ladies would be happy if his uncle declared for him.
"But aunt Lyanna was a Stark." Arya said, reminding him that he was half Stark, regardless of what his name was.
"That may not be enough little sister." Jon sighed. "Let's not speak of me becoming king until everyone else finds out who I am." His cousins, whom he would always see as his brothers and sisters, eventually agreed to let the matter drop, for now at least.
They spent the rest of the break talking and playing with Jon's dragons. He wanted to spend as much time with his siblings as possible before he was thrown into the convoluted world of Westerosi politics. However, all good things must come to an end, and far too soon, they were all called back to continue the viewing.
Jon and his siblings were the last to return to the viewing room. As they went to take their seats, Jon noticed that his uncle and Lady Catelyn, along with Rickon, were seated a little further from them than before. Uncle Benjen was seated right behind Jon's seat, and he could see that his uncle was still wroth with his brother for not telling him the truth about Jon's parents.
Then Jon made the mistake of looking across the room at all the Lords and Ladies and found his anger rising when he saw Robert. This was the man his uncle had helped to put on the throne. A fat drunk, who slept with only the gods knew how many women, while on his way to save the woman he supposedly loved. How his uncle could have any respect left for that man, Jon knew not, and it only served to fuel his anger.
While Jon was going through his internal turmoil, Connington was trying to stop Aegon from doing something stupid. "Why does that bastard have dragons?! They should be mine!" He couldn't understand why some random Northern bastard would have dragons when he was a Targaryen, and the heir to the Iron Throne.
Rhaegal's eyes turned to slits as he heard what the pretender said about his rider. He let out a low growl at the one who dared to insult his rider. Those who heard the dragon growl paled slightly and followed its sight to see Connington trying to hold back Aegon.
"I know Aegon, but we need to think this through carefully-" Connington tried only for Aegon to brush him off. Sometimes he wondered if the child Varys had claimed to be Aegon really was Rhaegar's son. Connington had never seen anything of Rhaegar in him, but by now it was too late to turn back.
Aegon snarled. "Oh, I have thought this through, and if he wants to keep his head, he will hand them over to me!" Having said his piece, he stalked towards Jon, determined to get what he believed to be rightfully his. Connington gave up and followed silently after him. He hoped Aegon wouldn't make a fool of himself in front of the Lords and Ladies of Westeros.
"Do you think he will be burned to death?" Arianne asked as they watched the Targaryen pretender and exiled Lord march closer to the rightful King. She hoped he would die, he was pretending to be Elia's son. If the dragon didn't kill him, he would face a much more painful death at the tips of Dornish spears.
"Perhaps, but no matter what happens this should be entertaining." Oberyn was quite amused by the pretender's actions. The boy's anger had clouded his judgment. He was going to make demands of someone who had fully grown dragons. And the invisible barrier protecting him from the dragons likely gave him false confidence. Besides, this kid was pretending to be his sister's son. He would not feel any remorse watching him be burned alive.
"You! Bastard!" Aegon called out to Jon as he stopped in front of the invisible wall separating them. Said 'bastard', already mad at his uncle and Robert Baratheon, only felt his fury rise even more. "As your rightful King I demand you hand over those dragons to me! If you do so, I may just be merciful enough to spare your life, bastard." He said in a haughty tone while putting emphasis on the word bastard. He seemed quite annoyed as he waited for Jon to respond.
Jon didn't get to say anything back, though, as Rhaegal, feeling his rider's anger, decided to respond for him. The dragon narrowed his eyes and, without warning, let forth a burst of green flames that were stopped by the invisible barrier, therefore saving Aegon from being cooked alive.
Aegon stumbled backwards and fell on his ass the moment the flames hit the barrier. He was a good distance away from the barrier. Even so, he still felt the heat radiating from the emerald dragon's flames.
Connington, who was a little ways behind Aegon, instinctively covered himself with his arm in a pathetic attempt to save himself. He wasn't in excruciating pain, he realized. He cracked his eyes open to see the flames being stopped by the invisible wall. He breathed a huge sigh of relief.
Without wasting time, he pulled Aegon up on his feet and dragged the shell-shocked man back to their seats. Connington could feel the judgmental gazes of the Westerosi nobility as they made their walk of shame. 'Aegon is off to an even worse start now.'
Rhaegal growled and let out an unearthly roar at the kid as he ran with his tail between his legs. Black smoke was coming from his nostrils. His eyes were narrowed as he observed his prey. This was a warning from the dragon. Mess with his rider, and you won't like the consequences it brings.
Once Arianne had taken her eyes off Rhaegal, she turned to check what had happened to the pretender. He hadn't been burned alive or eaten per se, but he still left quite a mess. If there had been any possibility of him gaining any support in Westeros, it was long gone now. Who would crown someone who had pissed themselves in front of all the lords and ladies of Westeros?
Olenna exhaled deeply. It was now setting in just how much danger Margaery would be in while trying to charm Jon. As far as she could tell, he was not the type of man who would burn those who insult him, but clearly his dragons were not so merciful. She overheard her grandchildren whispering to each other, and they reached the same conclusion. Perhaps she should reconsider her plans.
Sam almost fainted. Perhaps from the fear or the intense heat of Rhaegal's green flames. Who knows?
Tormund couldn't help but laugh. "Ha, ha, protective beasts those dragons." With those six dragons on their side, the Others wouldn't stand a chance.
Tywin felt lost. It wasn't something he was used to. He had always known how to come out on top in any situation. Yet after seeing the flames of the green dragon, he was no longer certain he could win this fight. No Lords would oppose a man with six dragons. The Iron Throne was much further from his reach than it had been just a few days ago. Years of careful planning, gone up in flames.
Cersei would not be queen for much longer, and her sons would never be kings now. Then his thoughts turned to his granddaughter, Myrcella. Perhaps not all was lost yet. A marriage between Jon and Myrcella would tie the West and the Stormlands to him. If the boy cannot be defeated, then he will be controlled. And once Myrcella gave him a few heirs, perhaps Jon will suffer an accident.
There was much work to be done. Robert will need to die. As will his brothers, unless they can be subdued. The Reach would need to be rewarded, perhaps marriage between Myrcella's heir and a future Tyrell woman. The North would back Jon, and with them may come the Riverlands and the Vale. There remained only one thorn in his side, Dorne. The Martells would need to be dealt with, permanently. Dragons may win battles, but they do not secure kingdoms.
There was only one thing Brynden was certain of. War would soon be upon them. The boy had Targaryen blood, he must with how easily he controlled those dragons. He had his suspicions, Lyanna Stark had been with Rhaegar for a long time. Enough time to get with child. If his suspicions were true, another war for the throne was inevitable, and this time the Targaryens had dragons. Luckily, the Riverlands were tied to the North by marriage, and Brynden didn't fancy going against a dragon. Soon, every Lord of Westeros would remember they had always been loyal supporters of the Targaryens. At least, that is what they would say when faced with a real dragon.
Stannis wasn't sure what to do. Jon couldn't be Lord Stark's bastard. He had to be Rhaegar's son with Lyanna. It was the only explanation for the dragons. Whether he was trueborn or baseborn would matter to the law, but it would matter little to the lords of Westeros. Not when the boy had six dragons at his command. The Lords would flock to him regardless of his legitimacy. It did not take a genius to figure out that this was a war they couldn't win. Supporting Robert may doom House Baratheon.
Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Robert shaking in a combination of fear and rage. He'd likely come to the same conclusion.
After Jon had calmed down Rhaegal, and quietly thanked him for defending his honor, he retook his seat among his siblings. Unlike the smaller dragons and the direwolves, who all sat with their owners, Rhaegal and Viserion laid down closer to the invisible barrier.
Once everyone was finally settled, the viewing started once again.
