Notes:

So I have been *obsessed* with the very limited single parent fics. And I immediately decided to throw my hat into the ring.
Just a short chapter to kick things off but I wouldn't be surprised if I get the next one done pretty soon.
Till then, enjoy!

Chapter 1: The Universe Is Rarely So Lazy... Until It Is

Chapter Text

Despite being born and raised Jewish, David Jacobs was not the biggest believer in miracles or fate.

He tended to think like the Holmes brothers in the Sherlock series (which he watched at least once a month):

What do we say about coincidence?

The universe is rarely so lazy.

But he forgot that that meant the universe, could, on occasion, be lazy.

Case in point, just as he got off the phone with his sister, Sarah, who was telling him to get a roommate - "You live in a nice two bedroom apartment. Even if you don't want to date someone, you should have some company instead of walking around like a loner," - he spotted, none other than than his best friend, Jack Kelly.

Davey and Jack had met when they were 16. Davey's family had moved all of their children to a different school after several bullying incidents against the two older Jacobs children. You'd think, that in this day and age, kids wouldn't be horrible and homophobic.

Regardless, Jack had instantly taken a liking to his younger brother, Les. And somehow, Davey had got caught up in it.

They were inseparable by the time they turned 18 but by that time, life forced them to seperate.

Jack got into an art college in Santa Fe, his dream opportunity. He romanticized Santa Fe to be a beautiful, clean, opportunistic land.

So basically what America was meant to be.

Davey, on the other hand, was offered a very exclusive, well-paying internship with The World, owned by the father of their other friend, Jack's ex-girlfriend and currently Sarah's girlfriend, Katherine.

It was a great job, he had fun. While journalism wasn't his ultimate goal, he was pretty good at it.

And the paycheck meant he was able to afford a pretty good two bedroom apartment in New York of all places.

The aforementioned apartment that his sister was telling him to fill with a second tenant.

Davey started walking over to Jack, who was looking anxiously at his phone. They called each other, still. But it had gone down to once every 6 months if they had time. They texted every so often but it was sporadic checking in, making sure the other was still alive.

"I wonder why he didn't tell me he was back in New York," Davey muttered.

When he was close enough, he called out, "Jack!"

He watched his friend's head snap up as he looked around for who had called him. He caught sight of Davey and grinned. But not his usual grin. Davey felt a little worried. Jack looked apprehensive at the sight of him.

Nonetheless, he returned the hug his significantly taller friend forced on him.

"Jack Kelly, back in New York City. Santa Fe kick you out of something?"

"Or something." Jack furrowed his brow as if he had just remembered something but shook his head and looked back up at Davey. "How ya been, Dave? Still working for my arch nemesis?"

Davey laughed. "He didn't like you dating his daughter, how is that arch nemesis worthy?"

Jack just shrugged. He hadn't changed a bit.

"So what are you doing back here? And when did you get here? And where are you staying?"

"So many questions."

"I'm a journalist, it's in my job description."

Jack grinned that nervous grin. "Only got here two days ago. Stayin' in a cheap hotel not far from here. And maybe I'm back cuz I missed your pretty face."

Davey raised an eyebrow. "Nice try, Cowboy. I'm not having sex with you."

Jack smiled and pretended to be hurt. "I'm crushed! Rejected, yet again!"

But he didn't answer the question properly.

Davey noticed but didn't push, instead saying, "Why don't you stay with me? Temporarily while you're trying to find your own place, at least. I've got a spare room and a sister who is insisting I get a roommate."

If the universe was gonna be lazy, he might as well take advantage of it.

"Nice to hear Sarah hasn't changed. She and Kath still a thing?"

Davey nodded. "Seriously, Jack, you can stay with me while you just sort things out instead of wasting money on a hotel."

Again, Jack gave him that nervous smile. "Naw, you don't wanna be 'round me 24/7."

"Considering I'm not the starving artist, I'm not the one who'll be at home 24/7."

Jack frowned now. "Serious, Davey. I'm good."

"Jack, why are you-" he stopped short as he noticed where Jack's hand was resting. He'd been so absorbed with seeing his best friend again that he didn't notice that Jack was holding a stroller.

Jack followed his gaze and just said, "I'm a dad...surprise?"
