Work Text:

It was Christmas, and would be their last Christmas together before Daniel left the team. Max was still hurt over that one, but he wanted to make the most out of the time they still had as teammates, and the time he still would have with the Australian around as much as he was, since next season everything would be different.

Not necessarily bad, or good, just different. They had been at RedBull’s Christmas’ party, since they only were going off for their hometowns on the next week. They had done their best to enjoy it, but both men knew that so much wasn’t it, they were away from their families, they were spending the last Christmas together, on the same team, and the future was full of uncertainties. Would they drift apart? Would their friendship survive through the team change? Should Max tell Daniel how he felt before the man left for good? Or especially since he was leaving, because if it went all up in flames, they wouldn’t have to be together every day?

As said, too much unknown. They left the party at around ten pm, and went back to the hotel they had to stay at for the party, since it was on a different town, considerably far from where they live. And so they ended up choosing to stay together till the clock hit midnight so they could wish each other merry christmas, and to not be alone during that time.

It was now 11:58 pm, and they had been talking for quite some time. Max had just asked Daniel what would he wish for if he could get anything he wanted, and Daniel said that there was something he knew he couldn’t ever have, but that being home for Christmas came pretty close in second place, and had then repeated back the question to the younger man.

Max had been then stuck on how to answer, because everything he wanted was for Daniel to want him back, but he couldn’t really say that now, could he? So he had given a vague answer, saying that there was this person he really liked but he was sure didn’t like him back at all, so there was nothing to be done.

Which, obviously, caused Daniel to start asking him questions, Did he know the person? How was Max sure that the person didn’t like him back? How Max had even gotten the time to see people outside of racing long enough to fall for someone? Why hadn’t he told Daniel about his crush before? Could he pretty please tell him who it is?

And well, because Max had drank quite a considerable amount of alcoholic beverages that night, and because he was terribly in love with Daniel, his mouth decided to betray him and he ended up answering that “I’d do anything for you Daniel” which looking back was much more of an answer than he thought it would’ve been.

Daniel started staring at him, searching for something on his face, before getting closer to Max, and the only word he could say when he apparently found whatever he was looking for was “Maxy?” that was softly whispered, before he took the Dutch’s face into his hands, and pulled the younger man close, kissing him.

They broke out of the kiss by a phone ringing with what sounded like an alarm, and Max after fishing his phone from his pocket and stopping the alarm, smiled brightly and said “Merry Christmas Dan”, leaning closer and giving the man a brief kiss. Daniel pulled the younger man into his arms, giving him a hug and whispering “Merry Christmas Maxy” in his ear. He then pulled away, giving the Dutch another kiss.

They ended their night sleeping in each other’s arms, in Daniel’s room, after many kisses and I love you’s were exchanged, along with Max saying that “this was the best Christmas gift he ever could’ve wished for” and Daniel saying that that would be the first of the gifts he’d give the younger man.
