Missing Her Was Dark Gray

Work Text:

You’re home well what was once your home. She left you here.

“It’s been years since you were home. I think it would be nice if you were to go back for just a bit don’t you?”

You agreed because you thought she would be coming back. It had been nine months now. You had to get a place and a job. You picked up the pieces and made friends and functioned like any normal human would. It wasn’t that you missed traveling and exploring other planets. You missed Missy. You missed her chaotic self. You missed seeing a light in her eyes while she watched a planet burn to the ground. How you fell so hard for someone that had completely opposite morals to the ones embedded into you, you don’t even know. Obviously you didn’t mean anything to her or she wouldn’t have just left you. That’s what you tell yourself anyways.

You watch the seasons change you go to events with your friends watching as they slowly become part of a couple. Christmas seems colder than normal this year. It’s probably the happy couples under mistletoe and holding hands while ice skating. You’re all alone despite being asked out numerous times the past few months. How do you say yes when you’re heart is far away? You can’t say yes to dating or loving anyone when everything you are belongs to a time lady.

You decide after a year that you’re going to put in the effort to find Missy or at the very least The Doctor. You have been searching for signs of her the past year without much luck. Another year goes by another Christmas all alone. New Years rolls around and you go to a party just to watch your friends kiss their significant others at midnight. It makes remember the hollow spot in your chest that you spend so much time pretending it doesn’t exist.

It’s been almost three years exactly when you finally hear of a Professor teaching at St Luke’s University that is different and goes by The Doctor. You quit your job, give up your apartment and pack up the few things you have.

You meet Bill first. She is very friendly and super helpful. You know if you weren’t completely taken she would be the type of girl you would go for. “I know The Doctor.” She says when you ask if she could help you find him.

“I have met him before.” You reply because you don’t want to seem crazy for looking for a random professor at a university you don’t even go to.

“Really?” She asks.

“Yes I use to travel with his friend as her companion. Do you know where his office is?”

“Sure I can take you there after my shift.” She offers.

“That would be great.” You smile.

You spend your afternoon walking around campus. It’s crazy but you’re almost positive Missy is there. It’s like you can feel her. You finally meet Bill at exactly 4 outside of her job.

“Come on he is this way.” She smiles.

She leads you until a building and walks straight into The Doctor’s office. You notice the Tardis in the corner.

“Bill I thought today we would...Y/N I assume you’re here for Missy.” He says as he notices you.

You nod in agreement.

“It’s probably not a good idea.” He says.

“Look I don’t care if it’s the worst idea in the whole universe. The last three years have been the saddest and loneliest years of my life. Missing her has been the darkest gray I have ever known.” You can feel the tears welling up in your eyes.

“You had to do the eye thing didn’t you?” He sighs.

You found her it had taken you almost three years but you found her. You can’t believe you found her that’s the only thing that plays over in over in your head.

“You don’t understand Y/N she has to be in the vault for a thousand years. You won’t even be alive the whole time.” He winced like you weren’t aware of being a human.

“I don’t care. I spent seven years with her before she left me back here. I don’t care if I get just one more year, one month, one day or even one more hour with her. I want to spend whatever time I have left to give with her.” You eyed The Doctor and you saw when he broke and was going to give.

“Fine.” He agreed. He walked you down to the door of the vault. “I’m going to show you how to come in and out of the vault. How to raise and lower the containment field. You watched and repeated the steps to show him you understood. “Good luck.” He smiled as he walked away. You took a deep breath and let it out as you walked in the vault for the first time.
