Chapter Text

"Folks, you're listening to Radio KLOX, you know the number, 555-1650, once again that's 555-1650.  Give us a call!  It's 3 in the morning, you've got nothing better to do!"  They spun the dial to call the number.  "Oh!  Looks like we've got a caller.  Hello caller!"  "....Hi"  Alex said quietly.  "Alright sweetheart what's on your mind."  They caressed the plastic telephone.  "I'd uh, I'd like to ask about The Count."  "Oh yes The Count!  Another vampire hunter!  What about him?"  "I'd- I'd like to talk to him.  I think I can help."  There was whispering on the other side of the phone.  "Uh, listen, we can't exactly give out personal details about callers on the show like that.  You're vampire boyfriend'll have to wait."  The host said in his voice that walked the line of sincerity and sarcasm.  "But why don't you tell us a bit about yourself."  Alex froze.  "Okay..."  There was a silence.  "Alright, so, introduce yourself.  Go on."  "Well, I'm an angel."  "Oh, an angel, huh?  Be not afraid dear listeners, an Archangel is upon us!"  Alex lightly snickered under their breath.  "Tell us more, are we all doomed to eternal damnation?  Or is God going to save our souls?"  "I can't answer that."  Alex confessed.  "Aw c'mon, off the record, we'll all go to confession."  Alex paused.  "Well, we don't know everything, so it's not that I'm not allowed to tell you, I just genuinely don't know."  "Ah, gotcha.  So if you're an angel, what do you want from The Count?  Are you going to kill him, save his soul or whatever, what's the deal?"  "I just want to help him."  Alex said.  "A very specific goal.  Anyway, what do you wanna say 'bout being an angel?  You guys tend to get a better rap than vampires, is that really justified?"  Alex paused.  "Well, there's quite a few things people get wrong.  We don't live in Heaven, frankly we know about as much as humans do.  We can't fly, that's one I don't like people saying."  "Why's that?"  The host asked.  "Because I wish I could."  "Hold on, isn't jealousy a sin?"  Alex chuckled.  "Another thing people get wrong, we're not bastions of purity.  We can sin and swear and do all those kind of things like humans too."

Martin sat on the roof of a crumbling apartment complex, a small portable radio in his hand.  Another caller was asking about him.  Typically these kind of calls amused or annoyed him, but this one was different.  Christine was about the only one who considered seeking help for him, even then she didn't have any idea of a fraction of the scope she was dealing with and gave up.  He listened more intently to the call, "Well, I'm an angel."  An angel?  This was new.  Typically other callers claimed to be fellow sufferers of the sickness.  He continued to listen to the call with condescending curiosity.  "So no wings, huh?  Where does all that come from then?"  "I don't know, you guys can be pretty creative sometimes."  "Aw, ain't you sweet.  For those of our listeners just tuning in, we're here with an actual real life angel.  Maybe next week we'll get Bigfoot on!  But you won't know unless you tune in to Radio KLOX."  Martin thought about how the angel spoke to the host.  It was familiar to him, feeling so dejected that you could only find company in someone you didn't even know the face of.  He wanted to speak to them, see if they were genuine about wanting to help him, but he knew it wouldn't be worth the risk.  It was better to see if they called again.
