Chapter Text
Jay sat at his desk in his cabin, rubbing his temples. He’d had a horrible headache since he woke up, so he had sent his crew on a mission by themselves to get some peace and quiet. It seemed like it was getting better though, since Clancee had given Jay some peppermint tea before he and everyone else left.
He heard a large crash, and groaned a bit as the headache started to return. He stood up and walked out to the deck. There was his crew. Doubloon was carrying a chest on his back, likely full of gold, and Dogshank held a large bag… that was thrashing around violently.
“Dogshank, can you please put that bag down? And empty it completely,” Jay asked.
“Yes, Captain,” Dogshank obliged, dumping the contents onto the hard deck. A roar of pain came from said contents as it hit the planks.
It was a half-dragon, a mythical guardian that was half-human and, well, half-dragon. For the most part, they looked like a normal human, with tanned skin covered in scars, spiky brown hair and piercing red eyes. Then there were the wings: They were almost as tall as the rest of the half-dragon’s body, and a deep red, the same as their eyes. The half-dragon also had large, yellowing fangs and medium-length red claws.
The half-dragon rolled off of their back onto their stomach, wincing in pain as they did so.
Jay shooed his crew away. “Are you okay?” he asked the half-dragon.
They growled in response. “What do you think? I’m tied up and got unceremoniously dropped out of a bag onto hard wood.”
“Okay, yeah, that’s a good point,” Jay agreed. He turned to his crew and gestured for them to leave. They complied, not wanting to anger their captain.
“I’m Jay, the captain of this ship,” Jay told the half-dragon. “What’s your name?”
After a minute, the half-dragon grunted, “Name’s Kai. And those idiots just broke my wing.” They pulled themself upright, now sitting criss-cross.
Jay winces hearing that. “Alright, we need to get that checked out. Meanwhile, you can stay here on my ship.”
Kai growled again. “With those idiots? No. I’m going to go home, even if I have a broken wing, and you can’t stop me.”
Kai stood up, and walked towards the railing of the ship. Before Jay could stop them, they jumped off of the ship… and immediately started hurtling towards the ground due to their right wing not working.
Jay immediately grabbed their hand, and using a spare bit of rope he was able to pull Kai back up onto the ship.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Jay stated. “You almost died right then.”
Kai scoffed. “Yeah, right. I’m a half-dragon, I can’t die that easily.”
Jay huffed. “You still need to be more careful! Especially with that broken wing.”
Kai rolled his eyes as Jay continued. “You’re going to stay with us until you’re healed up. Luckily for both of us, I know a guy who’ll be able to help you with that. I just need to give him a call to tip him off that we’ll be coming,” he finished. “You can sleep in my quarters. Get some rest.”
Kai grumbled a bit, then walked off. Jay sighed, a mix of frustration about the general situation and relief that Kai listened.
