A letter to an old friend

Summary:

You write your final letter of goodbye to your old friend zhongli.

Notes:

I love writing sad stuff so and I felt like being mean to myself with my fav character in Genshin. :D

Work Text:

Dear Zhongli

Hope the many days you see will be well. As the years catch up to me I have many regrets from my youth. One of them is the distance we have created between us. I know that day when I confessed my feels, you didn’t feel the same and wanted us to no longer see each other. I still wish we could have continued to be friends. I wrote many letters to you hoping for a reply, but I received none. With this most likely being my final letter of goodbye. Zhongli I don’t understand why you won’t reply to me or visit me. But as a final request from an old friend, can I see you one last time. I grow weaker every day and my nieces and nephews can only help me so much as my final day comes near. Please old friend can I wish you a farewell?

Love,
y/n

Zhongli has always read every letter you have sent over and over again as they came in throughout the years. He had to stop himself from replying no matter how much it hurt the both of you. He will live for many lifetimes and you…. You only have one lifetime. Watching you waste your life away with an immortal who will outlive you. Is a faith he wishes on no one. That day when you confessed he was overjoyed. If only he was a mortal like you he would have accepted your love. But he had to refuse them and turn you away, and not even keep you at an arms reach with continuing the friendship you both have formed prior. Throughout the years and the letters you sent he would wonder if he made the right decision. You are a mortal and he was an immortal being. If there was a way to make himself mortal or you immortal we would do it in a heartbeat. There was none with the vast amount of knowledge he has gained over his years of walking this land he could not find a way to be with you. So he hoped you have moved on, but the letters you kept sending have shown him you haven’t.
With this final letter of goodbye, he had to see you one last and give you his real answer from that day. He should give you that closer you needed. Zhongli quickly grabbed all your letters he could see and made this way to your residents. He just hopes he’s not too late. He knocks at the door a young man opens the door. “ Are you Zhongli?” he questions. Zhongli nods his head. “This way they don’t have much longer.” The young man leads Zhongli to y/n’s room. When the door was open there laying in the bed is y/n and a young girl crying at their bedside.
Zhongli’s eyes widen and he drops to his knees the bag full of your letters falls with him and scatters all over the floor. He was too late, you have passed. The young girl who has noticed his appearance walked over to him still with a tear-stained face. A small sad smile she gave him “They know you would come. They wrote to you every chance they had.” Zhongli turned to the girl and whispered “Please, can you tell me their last words?” The young girl nodded her head with tears building up again in her eyes and said “Zhongli my friend welcome back.”
