i love you (under the moon)

Summary:

"Do you really believe what you said in the letter earlier? That it's just you on the receiving end?"

Notes:

a mini fluffy vmin, loosely inspired by the children's song "skidamarink"

Work Text:

"You shouldn't be up, you know. We're leaving tomorrow." Taehyung doesn't flinch nor turns around at Jimin's voice and continues to lie in the grass and look up at the sky.

"Could say the same about you," he replies and Jimin sits down next to him and follows Taehyung's gaze up at the star-clad sky.

There's not a single cloud obscuring the view of the countless dots hung up there over them and it leaves Jimin a little in awe.
"It makes you feel small," Taehyung says and Jimin looks over to him.

"What does?"

"The stars. There are so many of them. They remind me of the ARMY Bombs at our concerts. I feel really small when I see them too."

Jimin thinks he gets it, even if he isn't sure how to put it into words. Something about his role in this world and the vastness of the universe compared to the moment they're living in. Something like that.

"Taetae? Can I ask you something?"

Taehyung hums.

"Do you really believe what you said in the letter earlier? That it's just you on the receiving end?"

Taehyung doesn't answer immediately and Jimin watches him closely. Slowly, Taehyung’s eyes turn to him. "Isn't it true?"

Jimin frowns. Taehyung doesn't look upset or emotional anymore. If anything, he looks calm and collected.

Jimin gets up and reaches out to pull Taehyung with him. "C’mon, let's take a walk."

Taehyung lets himself get pulled along and away from the house and his hand remains in Jimin’s as they leave and walk down the road.

"You see those millions of stars? You can point out to them one by one, and for each one I can cite an instant of when I was at the receiving end. No matter how many you pick, I won't run out."

Taehyung stares at Jimin with big eyes. "That's ridiculous, there are trillions of stars and I–"

"And for every one of those, you have loved me. And I have loved you. Pick one."

Taehyung looks up to the sky and takes in the stars.

He points to a random place in the night sky. “That one,” he mumbles.

“On my first day of high school I was really nervous and couldn't say a word. You got mad and gathered all your friends and introduced me. I would have been lost without you.”

Taehyung rolls his eyes. “That old tale. You would have made all those friends yourself too. You've always been charming and popular. And pretty, and cute.”

Jimin looks like he wants to say more, but he drops it for now. “Pick another.”

“Jimin–”

“Just do it.”

Taehyung sighs and points to another random dot.

Jimin smiles. “The first time you kissed me was after I got chewed out by one of our coaches. I was so upset with myself and basically locked myself in the dance studio. You managed to get in and talk me down. You held my hand for hours and brushed away every tear. You showered me in compliments to cheer me up–”

“I showered you in compliments because you deserve to hear the truth–”

“And you made me laugh by talking nonsense. I was so exhausted and it was in the middle of the night. You were playing with my fingers and it just happened.”

Jimin reaches out to take Taehyung's hand. “I was so happy that night. So happy to finally have you.”

Taehyung looks away from Jimin but squeezes his hand. “Idiot, you always had me.”

“Not true. We didn't get along at first. We fought a lot.”

“We still do.”

“It's because you're still really annoying sometimes.”

Taehyung's head whips around. “ l’m the annoying one? Just earlier today you used up all of my shaving cream and wouldn't even go out to get new one!”

“There's plenty of shaving cream in this house, we're seven men.”

“It's about the principle, Jimin.”

Jimin snorts and he pulls Taehyung closer by his hand to kiss his cheek. “Whatever. Just pick another star.”

Taehyung pouts and points at another one.

“Your birthday fancafe posts. They're so cheesy and you always post then just before midnight when the day is almost over because then you think I won't see it right away. Because you're embarrassed and it's cute. They're always so heartfelt, and genuine. They make me really happy.”

“It's nothing.”

“It's so much. You're putting your emotions out there and I know it's not an easy thing for you to do. I have screenshots of all of them and I read them when I’m down. Just like the letters you wrote me. But that's a thing for another star.”

They stop walking as they reach a field. It's pitch black and quiet and the waves moving through the ocean nearby are echoing subtly in the background. Jimin approaches a big tree a few meters away from them and Taehyung can't help but get his phone and take a picture of Jimin's back. It's blurry and the quality sucks, but he thinks it's pretty.

Taehyung looks up at the full moon above them.

“What about that one?” He points up and Jimin turns and his eyes follow to where Taehyung is pointing.

“The moon?”

“Yeah, what about that one?”

Jimin walks back to Taehyung and stops just in front of him, reaching out to cup his face.

“It's when you first promised me that we’d stay together forever. It's the most important thing to me. Having you by my side until the end.”

“I meant that,” Taehyung whispers between them and leans into Jimin's touch. “Forever doesn’t even sound enough when it's about you. I want to go even longer.”

A wide smile appears on Jimin's face and he leans forward to leave a short and gentle kiss on Taehyung's lips.

“Let’s do that then. Longer than forever.”

“Five-ever.”

Jimin snorts and buries his face in Taehyung's neck. “You sound like a middle schooler. That was so lame, oh my God.”

“Shut up, this is good romance.”

Jimin plants a little kiss on Taehyung's neck and he feels Taehyung shudder.

“I love you, you know that, right?”

Taehyung nods and he leans back to see Jimin's face. His cheeks are rosy, as they usually get, and it's as lovely as always.

They end up sitting by that tree, wasting away what little time they have before they have to go back with little kisses and whispers of confessions and memories of their time together.

“This whole nightly date was really cheesy. You're so gross, Jimin.”

“You’re gross. You started it.”

“I wasn't the one talking about stars and stuff.”

“Shut up.”

“You shut up.”

“Idiot.”

“Idioter.”

“That's not a word, Tae.”

“I love you.”

Jimin smiles and rests his head on Taehyung's shoulder.

“Love you, too.”
