Summary
Astarion was fine being just friends with Tav, really.
He was fine watching her and Gale giggling and holding hands on their long walks through the Sword Coast. He was fine seeing them stay up late naming the stars together, and with Gale being the one she now ran to when she had nightmares. He was fine watching her sleep in Gale’s tent at night.
He was fine with it because it was his own fault for fucking up their chance at something real due his own crippling fear of betrayal and selfish plans of self-preservation. Maybe if Astarion had just told Tav how he looked for her first after every battle, things would be different.
But alas, he made himself be happy for her because she deserved something genuine and soft and safe. Miserable for him, but happy for her. The wizard was annoyingly good natured, and at the very least he knew Gale would take care of her.
Until, of course, he didn’t.
And Astarion was left to watch helplessly as she flung herself off of a cliff.

Summary
“Would you like us to dispose of the body, my lord?”
Vampire Ascendent Lord Astarion was unmoved, physically and emotionally, as he stared at Tav’s charred and lifeless body on the floor of their bedroom.
His ears rang with the combinations of the fading gala downstairs, the beating hearts of the guests that kept their lives, and something altogether unfamiliar that seemed to drown his senses in white noise as his eyes were locked on the bed sheets tied around Tav’s ankles.
“My lord?”
“What?” Astarion snapped at one of his attending spawn that stood next to Tav.
No, he thought to himself. Not Tav. Tav’s body.

Summary
Gale looked down from the heavens as Astarion frantically hit Tav on the chest, pressing his bleeding arm to her blue lips, desperately trying anything to bring her back.
Astarion sobbed and yelled at the sky, holding Tav's wet, bruised, and bleeding body on the rocky shores where she had washed up.
With a sudden gasp, Tav's head rose with a choking sound. Astarion immediately reached to hold her head up, pushing the sopping wet hair away from her face.
Tav looked up at Astarion with a question in her eyes, but all he could do was pull her into an embrace as he sobbed and held her.
Gale waved and the image disappeared, once again alone in his tower in the Astral Plane.
He should have left it at that, he knew that she was alive, confirmed that sending her soul back had worked. He should have been able to move on, let her live her life with Astarion, and forget all about the mortal girl he used to love.
He should feel happy for her second chance of life, proud of his ability to so easily take her memories of him, wiping her mind clean of how he had destroyed her.
So then why did he feel completely and utterly devastated?
